This beer is the essence of Southern California. A traditional West Coast IPA with a distinct copper hue, enhanced by generous additions of navel oranges, sweet blood oranges and grapefruit, all grown in Redlands, CA. The citrus fruit is a nice idea, but it tends to make this beer really acidic. That plus the hops gives an overdose of grapefruit peel. However, it's a interesting concoction and if you like the sharp taste it's worth a try.

Attractive appearance in the tulip glass. More orange than amber with a nice sudsiness. Aroma of orange juice and roast barley. Light malt flavor and not enough sweetness to counter the astringency attack. I have to rate the mouthfeel low for that puckery reason. Out of curiosity I mixed it 50/50 with Hog Heaven barley wine, which seemed to only make it more bitter and sharp.

From the 22 oz bottle. Bought at Best Damn Beer Store in San Diego.

Appearance: Pours out a clear, burnt orange color with a good carbonation level. About 1/2" of white head forms, which has both good retention and lacing. Pretty attractive looking beer all in all.

Smell: I detect a good amount of pale and caramel malts initially. Remainder of scents are citrus driven with orange rind and grapefruit coming to the forefront. Overall smells pretty malty without much hop complexity.

Taste: Initial taste is pretty malty. A good dose of citrus follows. The added fruit plays a significant role, as I get quite a bit of grapefruit and other bitter citrus fruits. Finish is malty sweet with a bit of resin.

Mouthfeel/Overall: Mouthfeel is medium, with a good amount of carbonation. As stated above, the finish is pretty sweet/malty which retracts a bit for me. Overall, I was not a huge fan of this. Too malt forward with one dimensional hop character. Worth a shot though.

Bottle opened on 9.3.12.

Thanks Jordan.

A - Pours a slightly cloudy, medium orange with a two inch yellow-tan foamy head. Great retention.

S - Sweet and malty, some citrus on the back end.

T - Oranges and lemons, some malt in the finish. This one tastes like it is not what it once was.

D - Decent carbonation with a sweet medium body.

O - Citrusy and malty. I would love to try this one fresh.

On draft at brewery.

Murky light orange. Minimal white head that gives nominal lace.

Aroma is mostly fruit (orange and grapefruit) but not as assertive as expected. Some floral and perfume notes.

Flavor is softly malty with significantly bitter finish. Fruits are present but down in the mix. Flavor not well-sorted.

Mouthfeel average for style: some carbonation bite, slightly tingly. Medium-bodied and slightly oily.

Overall - wouldn't seek out but would drink if easily available.

Appearance: A hazy orange apricot with chunky yeast floaters. Bright white head with rocky body and very nice lacing. Normal head retention.

Nose: Grapefruit, lime, orange fruit. Some malt.

Taste: Orange fruit, orange rind, grapefruit. Citrus pith.

Notes: It grows on you, give it some time.
