Poured into Block 15 Tulip @ Block 15 1 day after release

A - Pours an opaque black w/ 1 finger brown head that fades to a thick cap, leaves great lacing, mesmerizing brew.

S - Smells of chocolate, vanilla, coconut, cherries, coffee, oak, caramel.

T - Taste follows the nose, bitter chocolate, vanilla, coffee, cherries, oak, toffee, apples

M - Big, rich, full body, sweet but not cloying, spicy finish that is quite warming, but not at all hot, slightly bitter in the end

O - Very well done. Rich & complex, bourbon and imp stout very balanced, neither one out does the other, too drinkable, wish they still had bottles to take home and age.

Absolutely no carbonation. So difficult to enjoy when the mouth feel is like water

22oz bottle poured into a snifter. Thanks for this one Andy!

A: Pretty standard for a barrel aged stout. Pitch black/dark brown with a small mocha head that recedes after a few minutes. After that it keeps a tiny head.

S: TONS of oak and bourbon. Smells boozy. A bit of rubbing alcohol at the end. Chocolate, coffee, and caramel save it from the burning alcohol smell.

T: Not as hot as the smell suggests. Boozy chocolate, oaky flavors. Roasty flavor dominates. Touch of vanilla, coffee and caramel. Chocolatey bitterness in the aftertaste.

M: Silky smooth. Medium/thick bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: This is a great beer, I've been impressed by Block 15 so far. Can't wait to try more of their beers.

3-year vertical: 2010, 2011, 2012

I'm going to review the freshest version - 2010 was a bit flat and heavy on the smoke/leather. 2011 was a little better, but 2012 was definitely the best.

Ebony body - nicely carbonated, fudge, bourbon, vanilla, coconut, nice barrel notes. This was quite good - happy to have a bottle. Not sure if it ages poorly or if the recipe has just improved over the years, but i likely wont sit on my bottle much longer

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Inky viscous black. Not much head. A few surface wisps.

Smell - Bourbon is very strong. Lots of liquor. Vanilla and fudge all throughout. Awesome

Taste - Even more bourbon. Less fudgy, but still delicious. Bourbon flavor throughout. A little bit of fruitiness. Boozy.

Mouthfeel - Boozy. Thick and viscous. Low carbonation.

Overall - Straightforward fudge and bourbon. Good stuff.

Sampled at Block 15 night at Hop & Vine in Portland Oregon. A snifter with 10 ounces of barrel aged stout in it for $4? Sounds like a deal to me.

A: Very dark brown with lighter tan edges. Upon being served, a thin amount of cappuccino foam sat atop a quickly bubbled away to a very thin wisp ring.

S: Strong coffee aromas when it was very cold, much stronger essences of spicy bourbon with under-currents of fudge brownie came through as it warmed. Damn their -bals are nice.

T: Again with the strong coffee when cold but transitioning to some stronger caramel liquor, berry, and cocoa notes when it warmed. I swear there is only about a 2 degree window when some smoke is detectable. In that temperature range, this beer is sublime.

M: Low carbonation and full mouthfeel here. Right inside my personal wheel house.

D: My first experience with Block 15 beers tonight and I must say, this was the only one I found to be impressive. I will be paying close attention to this brewery from now on but only because of this singular, highly memorable beer. Well done guys. Bottle this soon!

500ml bottle poured into a snifter, 2014 vintage

A- pours a pitch black color with a barely traceable foamy khaki colored head that quickly disappears, leaving nothing behind

S- plenty of barrel aroma on the nose with some spicy oak, barrel juice, caramel, vanilla, slightly smoky malt, cocoa nibs & fig

T- lots of barrel flavor up front follows the nose, with plenty of bourbon, toasted spicy oak, dark cocoa, prune, charred smoky malt, slightly tangy finish

M- medium body with virtually no carbonation leads to a flat mouthfeel that continues to the finish

O- this one has potential, but I'm wondering if something went wrong with this batch. It's tasty, but almost completely flat
