King Caspian is an imperial version of our Ridgeback Red. This Royalty Red Ale offers a beautiful arrangement of bright pine and citrus hop character balanced with complex malt flavors, featuring a gently bitter finish that transitions from crisp Crystal malt into a hint of roasty Dark Chocolate.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a dark orange red with a one finger off-white head with great retention and solid lacing. Aroma of pale and lightly biscuit malt, red berries, mild citrus and pine. Flavor is biscuit and pale malt, citrus and piney hops, red berries, particularly cranberry and raspberry, pine needles and lemon. Pine builds into a piney and citrus rind bitter finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. Red ales are uncommon these days and an imperial one is a rare treat. This one is hoppier than usual, but has a very nice pine and citrus profile much like a West Coast IPA. Great berry notes in the malt that I look forward to in this style. Interesting flavor progression, from fruity malt to dominant pine and lighter citrus hops, ending in a proud IPA style finish. Very enjoyable. Glad this is back in production.

Draft version served at the Wildwood beer dinner.

The beer pours a reddish amber color with good head retention and lacing. The nose shows considerable sweet malt and dry citrus, with some underlying caramel, red candyapple and baked apple as well. This smells pretty nice actually. The flavor profile replicates the nose pretty closely, giving contrasting flavors of sweet and bitter. There's a bit more heat from alcohol in the finish than I like, but otherwise this is a pretty solid red amber. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a long, bitter, somewhat sweet and alcoholic finish.

A double version of their Ridgeback Red, King Caspian is named after the owners' dog, Caspian.

Appearance- Served in a Block 15 snifter: King Caspian has a 2 finger off-white head with a gorgeous, deep-ruby body when held to light. Head retention was on the solid side of things, and there is this terrific, thick cluster of lacing on half of my glass that looks like it's made of white sponge or maybe spray foam insulating.

Smell- A fragrant blend of citrus rind and piney hops with the malt hiding in the background, but still noticeable and supplying some candy-like sweetness.

Taste- Aggressive citrus (white grapefruit, orange rind, lemon zest) and a touch of pine coming through in the hop department. The more I drink, and the more the beer warms, the more the malt sweetness is allowed to shine alongside all the hops. The lemon and white grapefruit start to faze out the orange, and supply ample bitterness. Caspian has a very nice malt backbone, however, which I like and expect out of a double red. This beer could have a quite few months of age on it and probably turn into a new monster that is just as tasty. There's just a tiny pinch of heat towards the finish, but not enough to matter.
I want to give this a 4.25, but that's not how the scoring works, so I tend to grade down.

MF- A medium-full body that is balanced nicely by a medium amount of carbonation that seems to wait until your halfway through before coming in. Finishes pretty dry but some malt sweetness lingers.

Drinkability- I have put down quite a few of these since their release, and I keep going back. It is plenty hoppy, but my tongue is still in fine shape after one. I could drink 2 or 6 of these with ease, which is dangerous, but fun. Everybody wang chung tonight.
