On draft at Croxley's, Smithtown, NY.

Poured a black hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was decent retention and good lacing.

The smell featured a balmy pine and citric hop and clean roasted malt.

The taste offered an upfront hop punch, with a secondary roasted barley and lingering bitterness through the finish.

The mouthfeel was toward the fuller side of the style.

Overall a tasty and brawny Black IPA.

Fresh from a growler at the brewery.

Pours a near black color with a tight creamy head that left a wall of lacing as it settled. Some bigger bubbles in the head.

The aroma is of light citrus and a very mild roast. More of the hops seem to pull through. I get a bit of grapefruit. Not a very strong aroma.

The taste is a good mixture between the hops and roasted malt. None of either are dominate. The hops bring a bright flavor from the citrus notes and also bring a piney dankness. The malt has a roasted bitterness, fairly mild. It brings a light chocolate note as well. Kind of a mocha thing going on. The hops are a bit more assertive but the beer has excellent balance.

Again, good balance between the hops and malt. The hops are more flavorful than bitter so you don't get the double whack of bitterness that most black IPAs bring. Slight pine and mild roast bitterness in the end. ABV seems to be well hidden. Perhaps a touch sticky in the end.

Not a huge fan of the style but GSB pulled off a good sample of the style. The beer has the needed balance that most lack for the style.

stopped by the brewery the other day and sampled this one...dug it so i brought a small growler home for a proper taste. enjoyed from a spiegelau tulip.

a - through the growler no light escapes. black as night...looks the same poured into the glass, but the head is massive and greyish cream colored...almost khaki. head hung out, not much lacing, but the head moved as a solid unit.

s - nose is a nice dosing of fresh citric fruit with some black malt on the backbone. no roast which is nice. rather crisp on the olfactory.

t - the black of this black ipa leads on the flavor...and here comes the roast. black malt, some chocolate and coffee notes. the hopping seems to come across more as a bittering note on the finish as opposed to a sweet fruity garnish over the top of the flavor that the nose suggested. as my palate warms up to the brew, i notice more of that tropical citric hop that i'm looking for, but it isn't as forward as i'd like. it is more of a glazing on the flavor as opposed to the star...i'd love to see the malt profile and hop profile switched on this beer.

m - good carb, a bit fizzy even...but an easy drinker all around.

o - overall, i'm not the biggest fan of black ipas with some exceptions. this one falls on the good side of the scale for me, but nothing game changing here. a nice beer from the locals and certainly worth checking out if you get the chance.

From 01/16/14 notes. Had this on tap at Rattle n Hum in NYC. 14 oz. pout in a pint glass for $5.

a - Pours a dark brown, almost black color, with one inch of dark tan head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of pine hops, citrus hops, roasted malts, and dark chocolate . Nice nose, lots of hops up front, mixing with roasted malts. Very nice in the nose, I like it.

t - Tastes of roasted malts, citrus, dark bitter chocolate, burnt malts, toasted malts. Taste is good but focuses more on the roasted notes and has less hops to it than the nose.

m - Medium body and low to moderate carbonation. Easy to drink.

o - Overall a solid Black IPA. I liked the nose a lot and it was easy to drink. Would definitely order it again for $5, worth checking out.
