A: The beer is clear yellow in color with some hues of orange and a light amount of visible carbonation. An aggressive pour resulted in a finger and a half high light beige colored head that took a long time to settle down, eventually leaving a thin film of bubbles covering the surface, a collar around the edge and lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of caramel malts are present in the nose along with strong notes of citrusy hops and hints of pine resin hops.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and has prominent flavors of caramel malts, except that the pine resin hops stand out in front of the hints of caramel malts. There is a light to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: In this day and age, this beer stands out among most of the other IPAs in that it is a malt-forward beer but isn't overly sweet because there is also a good balance in the form of a heavy dose of supporting hops.

Brief impressions from a bottle nabbed at a grocer in Brooklyn:

Piney and rindy, with pungent bitterness and a coating mouthfeel. Dips into the grapefruit flavour without letting it eclipse the rest of the hop profile. Pale malts and caramalts provide some balancing sweetness, but it does feel a biteen to bitter to my tastes. A hint of onion from the Simcoe. Floral hop notes. No citrus, really.

Well-carbonated, medium-bodied, smooth, slightly dry.

It's a straightforward IPA. Casual drinkers will enjoy it; discerning drinkers may find it unremarkable. Drinkable fare, with a well disguised ABV that's lower than many contemporary IPAs.

Reviewed from notes.

Pours a moderate golden color. Slightly dark with a white head and a bit of lacing. Nose is some citrus hops with some orange and grapefruit rind. Pretty good. The taste is a bit more malty without too much of a hop presence, although there is some light citrus there. Light to medium body with slight bitterness. Drinkability is pretty good as this doesn't stray too far in any one direction, but this is also what keeps the flavor a bit plain.

Beer name/Brewer: Massive IPA Great South Bay Brewing, L.I. N.Y.

Serving info: Growler filled on Long Island

Pours: typical darker honey amber, chill haze

Lacing: Very fine and quality looking lace, leaves ample tiny bits around the glass

Head: moderate head development, staying a short while, before going to a nice looking tiny bubble film and slight collar

Sniff: Bready malt/resiny hopped up nose

Body: Full bodied and quite smooth, adding to the continued theme here of quality and enjoy ability

Flavor notes: Tasty IPA, grapefruit and resiny hops doing the heavy lifting. Ample malt under carriage adds to the package. Quite worthy creation, hopefully expanded NY area distribution will get this one more out there and into the hearts, minds and bellys of the BA community. In the mean time, its well worth giving this one a try..

On draft at The Lark, East Northport, NY.

Poured a medium brass hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured predominantly piney hops with a round sweetness.

The taste consisted of an upfront spicy pine punch with a supporting grainy sweetness and some faint butterscotch. There was a considerable residual hop spice noted. The malts were a bit thin however.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style with a lingering piney spice.

Overall a tasty hop bomb. Could use a bit more bulk however.

- spiegelau ipa glass.

A: Dense tangerine orange with a buff, foamy one inch head that was nicely firm in hold. Strong display of macro-effervesce, leaves a meaty foam lace band.

S: Nice aromatic of citrus-grassiness, but is very, very brief, from the bottle to the first wiff was about it. Flowery hop flashes, some dried orange peel. dank herbal notes, and a slight indication of onion grass.

T: Grassy citrus hop flavor, nice level of bitterness, toasted lush malting, has a hint of onion grass on the finish. Light lingering grassy hop warmth, dried orange peel, after the swallow.

M: Decent bite of carbonation, creamy fullness, edgy feel and was definitely one of the bright spots of the drink.

O: A decent level of bitterness, but massive? open to interpretation and years of hop experience. Complexity was rather linear, good drinkability, not great, but satisfying ibus with a deep lush malty body. Definitely gets better deeper into the drink. Nice 9% abv doesn't interfere with the experience.

Pours a deep golden color with a brownish hue. The head is dense with good retention, settles into a chunky ring with some lacing on the glass.

The aroma is of a sweet bready malt with some brown sugar and honey notes. Not a sickly sweet aroma, which is nice. The hop aroma brings some grapefruit and orange notes. A touch of pine. Not a strong hop aroma but it is a nice profile.

The taste has more of a piney hop flavor with some grassy notes. Not much citrus or floral notes. The malt is bready and sweet, good base for a hoppy brew. Its a good bitter profile but not so much on the hoppy flavor.

Moderate body with tingly carbonation. Lightly bitter on the palate due to the good balance from the malt. Finishes with a slightly dry hop bitterness.

Well made IPA just not quite flavorful enough for my liking.

On tap at the Lark in East Northport, NY: pours hazy copper color with a creamy 1 finger tan head that faded and left a creamy oil slick-like layer on top and layers as it went down.

Smells of big hops up front with the aroma hitting my nose from a few inches away, with a mix of citrus hops, grapefruit, papaya, orange peel, pineapple, floral hops, herbs, piney hops, caramel, light spices and a sweetness like brown sugar; very hoppy nose that remains juicy and fresh smelling throughout, but has very little balance which is fine for me as I love a fine smelling hoppy IPA.

Tastes very hoppy, with citrus hops, grapefruit, papaya, orange peel, pineapple, lemon, floral hops, herbs, piney hops, caramel, lightly toasted grains, buttery crackers, sweet malt, mint, tea leaf, light spices like pepper, cinnamon and coriander, and a sweetness like brown sugar or syrup towards the end; light bitterness, which is surprising based on the big hop flavor.

Mouthfeel is creamy and oily slick, with a medium body, average carbonation and a slight bitter finish. This beer completely hides the ABV and is on the sweet side, but still pretty good overall.

Tried from a sample at Beer City in North Babylon, NY
A - Orange with a little foam.

S - Notes of pine, citrus, and of course, hops.

T - Crisp, with some sweetness that gives to a hopy finish.

M - Enjoyed this one. Refreshing, and with a raspy finish.

D - This is a solid drinker. Nice brew to watch the time go by.

12oz bottle brought from Manhattan by @mr-jj. Served in a tulip. No idea what the age might be. If there's a date on it, I can't find it.

Pours slightly hazy golden with a smallish head that fades mostly away fairly quickly. Not much carbonation. Smell is nice, tropical juicy, citrus.

Taste is not as sweet and tropical as the aroma suggested. More of a pale ale level of sweetness, with a low IPA to high Pale Ale level of hoppy bitterness. Nice bitterness with a hint of tropical juice.

Mouthfeel is light and dry. Overall, not bad.

This is a re-review of my 6/18/14 review. My original comments and scores follow my update:

A: slight haze; bronze colored; 1 finger off white head that receded to a patchy cap; nice lacing;

S: nice combination of hop aromas - earth and pine are most prominent, but there's a hint of floral and tropical fruit as well;

T: earthy for a moment, then metallic; floral in the background from mid-palate through the finish; moderate bitterness at the end;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish;

O: once again, the flavor is the weak point, but there is a lot of good here as well;

A: very clear; copper colored; with a fairly aggressive pour, got 1 finger head that dissipated within a couple minutes; a little lacing; (3.5)

S: really nice; strawberry, pineapple, and pine; (3.75)

T: taste is subdued as compared to the nose; almost nothing up front; pine kicks in at mid-palate and it has a moderately bitter finish with almost no accompanying flavor; (3.25)

M: medium bodied; lightly carbonated; (3.5)

O: The taste really threw me off; overall, it's fine and very drinkable, but having a muted flavor isn't a great selling point for me; I will definitely try it again to see if it was the bottle or perhaps my palate; (3.5)

Served unto a pint.

Appearance: golden amber, head was roughly 3/4" off the body.

Smell: slight floral, but comes off light.

Taste: amazingly complex, floral, piney, caramelly...absolutely no complaints in this department.

Mouth: medium to heavy, smoother than a stick of butter.

Overall: you know what, I want to buy a case of this, this is a great everyday IPA, only thing missing is a football game and a cigar.

Hard to quantify my impressions of this tasty but typical big IPA.

A: Clear bronze orange with foamy one finger head that was modest in retention and lacking in lace.

S:Too slight, citrus, honey, white pepper. Flowery hops, orange peel. dank herbal notes, and onion grass.

T: Grassy citrus hop flavor, with a fine level of bitterness, toasted malt, with a hint of onion grass. Dried orange rind candy in the after taste.

M: Firm carbonation, edgy feel and crisp finish. Good food beer.

O: Decent, different. Complex. But not massive. Try 6.

A- a golden orange hue with two inches of white foam and a scattering of thin lace.

S- grapefruit and pine mostly, a tiny malt presence brings out some doughy quality.

T- Sweet citrus juice and bitter peel, the finish is pine and some lemon, with a bready malt faintly in the background.

O- A very solid ipa here, and it is great on tap. I had it side by side with another ipa and Massive didn't hold up because of a thinner mouthfeel and less pronounced flavors. But don't get me wrong, it is a solid ipa.

A smooth drinkable DIPA. Clear golden ooange amber. Tidy white head with decent lace. Smell has caramel malt sweetness wit a light tropical fruitiness. Some earth and pine. Taste is smooth and easy drinking. Sweet malt and earth. Some tropical fruit melange. Grapefruit unfolds as it warms. Clean finish that leaves hop oils and toasts grains. Feel is super drinkable for this abv. Smooth lightly creamy carbonation. A sessionable DIPA. Nice

Live review. Big thanks to doomXsaloon for the gift of this fresh bottle.

Looks filtered, which I normally score down,, but it is a beautiful gold, topped by a massive, off white head that only gradually shrinks to a lasting cap, leaving slathers of clingy lace. Truly lovely.

Hints of tart yeast play with citrus hops and light bitter, and are carried into the land of perfume by some righteous grainy sweet.

Full flavor, with some of the super clean bitter hops leading the parade, with pine, herbal, grapefruit pith, lemon, all consorting across the palate with intensity and grace..

Very viscous, nice med. carb, crazy intense finish for style. A bit of a rooty build up as it goes, but considering the amount of hops, and I assume extract, it is pretty clean for it all.

Reminds me of Hop Czar. Yeah, that good. Nice things coming from Long Island finally.

Light amber color. Head dissipates quickly but there is some really nice lacing on my glass. This is a lighter, gentler IPA than most but still packs a nice 6.6% ABV. So both hoppiness in aroma and taste in lighter. No real floral hints for me. I can't say too much bad but I can't say too much good either. There's a ton more IPAs I would rather drink.

I am not usually a fan of IPA , this one may convert me.

No particular aroma. Pours a nice light orange amber body with a decent light beige head. Head retention is good and laces the glass accordingly. Taste is a mild citrus with a good bitter tang. Not as "medicinal" in the aftertaste as I've found in other IPA's.

Have had this many times on tap. Nice pale gold color with lots of fluffy head and lacing. Smells of piney resin and almost sour grapefruit. Tastes of resin and grapefruit, citrus really comes through. Dry hops has some bite but adds some sweetness. dry hoppy mouthfeel and some might find it sticky. Can be drunk, but as for me, i'm drinking stouts now, I'll re-visit this iPA in the spring.

A - Gold color, nice carbonation, big frothy white head that leaves a lot of lacing.

S - Lots of resinous smelling hops, citrus and pine. Slighty sweet malt aroma.

T - Citrus from the hops comes through first with a touch of pine, followed by a simple but nice malt backbone. Tastes like a lot of 2-row with some very light crystal malt that gives the beer a sweetness.

M - A little less attenuated than most American IPA with a moderate mouthfeel, but not unpleasant.

D - Lots of hop flavors balanced by some nice malt flavors makes this an easy drinking IPA. Does not kill you with bitterness on the finish, great job by a new comer.

After pouring this dark golden IPA into my merlot glass to observe its interesting features, I noted the strong aroma of a grapefruit type of hops and swirling unique malt characters I noted later in the taste. The first taste was a vocabulary lesson in hops and as I slowly tasted more of it, the spicy taste seemed to change its personality to illicit more fruity esters which I would usually attribute to heavier double IPA names.

Like a circus bear riding a small bicycle, the Massive IPA packed a large taste that did various tricks as its slowly warmed up in my glass. I was impressed with its volume and weight as I thought it paired well with sharp cheddar cheese and would make a good beer to tailgate with in the company of good friends.

Served on draft into a pint glass.

Appears golden or light brown. Slight head that remains intact.

Smells buttery and slightly hoppy.

Tastes ok but not hoppy enough. Expected a little more

Mouthfeel is nice. Fresh up front with a slight bitter finish.

This beer pours out a nice golden color.

Not much of a nose to it. Slight citrus and a sence of the hops.

The taste is nice and comes off really hopped out. Some pine and citrus notes flow with the hops and the finish is nice and smooth. One of the better single ipas that you'll find on Long Island.

I really hope these guys start to offer some bottle/can forms of their brews soon.

Too bad it's ms-named.
