Smokey And The BoisSmokey And The Bois
Notes: Ale aged in Bourbon Barrels with Vanilla Beans & Cacao Nibs. Collaboration with Rare Beer.

A careful blend of Black Tuesday (a much-coveted, bourbon-barrel-aged imperial stout), Smoking Wood (an imperial rye porter, offering malts smoked with beech- and cherrywood), and Bois (an exceptional, bourbon-barrel-aged old ale). This exclusive release also uses Nacional cacao nibs from Mindo Chocolate Makers, a bean-to-bar chocolatier who works directly with Ecuadorian growers.

Aroma on this is quite generous: vanilla, almond, powdered doughnuts, cotton candy. Notes of bitter chocolate, coffee, and smoke are met by mellowing influences like crème brûlée and milk chocolate. A warming integrated vein of alcohol provides a nice lift. The finely bubbled, and relatively subtle, CO2 adds just enough extra texture for everything to present itself fully.

Color, a deep, chocolate brown lightens to a cola color, a maple-syrup-ness at the edge. From Black Tuesday's contributions: char, burnt caramel, bitter chocolate. Those are matched with the layered, caramel-y richness this gets from Bois, adding heavily detailed core notes of toffee, nougat, and the caramelized sugars that serve as a crucial note for this beer. Then that third blending, the Smoking Wood, adds in softer bittering elements from its beechwood- and cherrywood-smoked malts.

On tap at The Bruery in Placentia, CA.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, caramel, toffee, smoke, vanilla, and cocoa aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel, toffee, smoke, vanilla, and cocoa flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast and smoke bitterness and an alcohol kick on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with a great balance between the smoke, vanilla, and cocoa qualities all around.

Serving type: on tap.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a quarter finger high light beige head that died down but never completely faded away.
S: Light to moderate aromas of bourbon, vanilla, and dark malts are present in the nose.
T: The overall taste is very complex and has lots of flavors of dark malts and vanilla from the bourbon barrel aging.
M: It feels full-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer hides its alcohol very well and tastes a lot more like a 10% beer compared to a 16% beer.

Note: 2014 Vintage

A: Pours a clear but still opaque extremely dark brown (almost jet black) in color with hints of very light amounts of active visible carbonation along the edges of the glass and some faint garnet red + cola brown highlights. The beer has a half finger tall sudsy foamy tan head that reduces to a couple of small patches of thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of dark roasted malts, bourbon, oak barrels, vanilla, cocoa, and smoked malts.

T: Moderate aromas of roasted malts with moderate amounts of caramel and toffee malt sweetness. That is followed by strong flavors of bourbon, oak, and vanilla with moderate flavors of cocoa and smoked malts. Light amounts of bitterness and alcohol in the finish which fade pretty quickly.

M: Full bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of alcohol warming.

O: This is a great beer with some really nice flavors from the smoke, vanilla, bourbon, oak, and cocoa. A slow sipper and one I am very happy to get the chance to enjoy.

From a bottle, pours dark brown to almost black. It looks very thin, not much head.

The nose is incredible. Wood chips, vanilla, oats, cocoa, powdered sugar, graham cracker. The flavor is very boozy, up front, in the middle, hot at the finish. Does this really need to be 16%? The flavors are great. I love the vanilla, the oak, the dark chocolate and toffee. The finish is milky.

This a great beer, probably ages well. I am just thrown by their desire to make this 16% rather than 12-13%. Just alot of booze.

Split with JLindros.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a really dark brown almost black hue with a thin head that fades to leave a creamy halo.

S - Aromas of chocolate, sweet malts, very little smoke, faint bourbon, light vanilla, really faint booze.

T - Taste is similar to the nose, nice smokey notes, caramel, sweet malts, faint chocolate, light booze, nice light toffee, good chocolate. The smoke is very earthy and dense, almost cigar like.

M - Mouthfeel is nicely carbonated, lightly creamy, nice smokey finish.

O - Overall this beer was nicely smokey, good chocolate. Very nice pleasant smoke and chocolate.

2014 Vintage

Appearance: Very dark-brown with a modest sized dark-beige head that dissipated fairly quickly. Very "stout-like" in appearance, let me add nice looking stout..

Smell: Brown sugar, dark fruit notes (raisins and prunes), moderate bourbon notes, mild toffee and mild smoke notes. Nice nose on this beer.

Taste: Bourbon, brown sugar, moderate smoke notes, a touch of dark chocolate, faint raisins/prunes, and mild oak notes. The flavors complement each other well with no one flavor covering up any of the others. Typical of most high ABV Bruery beers, the alcohol is remarkable subdued especially considering it's more than 16% ABV.

Mouth-feel: Medium-bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. For a strong ale this is spot on for me.

Overall: Good blend resulting in a good beer. As the beer warms the smoke presence becomes more pronounced in the nose and taste but never to the point where the other flavors are masked. An interesting strong ale and a must try for smoked beer fans.

We drank this the same night that we drank World Wide, Bourbon County, Luscious, and a couple of other things.

The fundamental take-away: this was the best beer of the night.

What's terrible as a review is that the entire review is: holy crap.

The color is dark, ruby or burnt/toasted with a small lacing around the edge.

The aroma combines the roast malt, a tiny hint of smoke, some barrel, and a bit of alcohol warmth.

The mouthfeel: full, tongue coating, lush.

The flavor: In comparison, everything else we had was one-note. This opens on the tongue for a minute or so after each sip. It's insane.

Overall: I'm sad that I have one more bottle.

A: Poured into a snifter to a black beer with a finger of semi dense tan head that fades quickly to a collar around the edge of the glass
S: Smells of bourbon, coffee, chocolate, caramel, vanilla and hints of smoke. Slight dark fruits and toffee as well.
T: Taste is chocolate and dark fruits mingling with coffee and vanilla. slight smoke and a little booziness. More dark chocolate and smoke. Swallow is bourbon barrel and booze with some vanilla and caramel with some lingering smoke and coffee.
M: thick and creamy on the palate with soft but adequate carbonation and a semi-dry finish
O: This is a monster of a beer and it's absolutely fantastic. The flavors are all top notch and the complexity of the blend is unreal. It's a little boozy but it's also over 16% ABV. It's tasting great right now but it will be interesting to see what another year or two does to my remaining bottles.
