Smokey And The BoisSmokey And The Bois

Brewed by:
The Bruery
California, United States

Style: American Strong Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 16.20%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Ale aged in Bourbon Barrels with Vanilla Beans & Cacao Nibs. Collaboration with Rare Beer.

A careful blend of Black Tuesday (a much-coveted, bourbon-barrel-aged imperial stout), Smoking Wood (an imperial rye porter, offering malts smoked with beech- and cherrywood), and Bois (an exceptional, bourbon-barrel-aged old ale). This exclusive release also uses Nacional cacao nibs from Mindo Chocolate Makers, a bean-to-bar chocolatier who works directly with Ecuadorian growers.

Aroma on this is quite generous: vanilla, almond, powdered doughnuts, cotton candy. Notes of bitter chocolate, coffee, and smoke are met by mellowing influences like crème brûlée and milk chocolate. A warming integrated vein of alcohol provides a nice lift. The finely bubbled, and relatively subtle, CO2 adds just enough extra texture for everything to present itself fully.

Color, a deep, chocolate brown lightens to a cola color, a maple-syrup-ness at the edge. From Black Tuesday's contributions: char, burnt caramel, bitter chocolate. Those are matched with the layered, caramel-y richness this gets from Bois, adding heavily detailed core notes of toffee, nougat, and the caramelized sugars that serve as a crucial note for this beer. Then that third blending, the Smoking Wood, adds in softer bittering elements from its beechwood- and cherrywood-smoked malts.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a quarter finger high light beige head that died down but never completely faded away.
S: Light to moderate aromas of bourbon, vanilla, and dark malts are present in the nose.
T: The overall taste is very complex and has lots of flavors of dark malts and vanilla from the bourbon barrel aging.
M: It feels full-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer hides its alcohol very well and tastes a lot more like a 10% beer compared to a 16% beer.

Note: 2014 Vintage

A: Pours a clear but still opaque extremely dark brown (almost jet black) in color with hints of very light amounts of active visible carbonation along the edges of the glass and some faint garnet red + cola brown highlights. The beer has a half finger tall sudsy foamy tan head that reduces to a couple of small patches of thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of dark roasted malts, bourbon, oak barrels, vanilla, cocoa, and smoked malts.

T: Moderate aromas of roasted malts with moderate amounts of caramel and toffee malt sweetness. That is followed by strong flavors of bourbon, oak, and vanilla with moderate flavors of cocoa and smoked malts. Light amounts of bitterness and alcohol in the finish which fade pretty quickly.

M: Full bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of alcohol warming.

O: This is a great beer with some really nice flavors from the smoke, vanilla, bourbon, oak, and cocoa. A slow sipper and one I am very happy to get the chance to enjoy.

From a bottle, pours dark brown to almost black. It looks very thin, not much head.

The nose is incredible. Wood chips, vanilla, oats, cocoa, powdered sugar, graham cracker. The flavor is very boozy, up front, in the middle, hot at the finish. Does this really need to be 16%? The flavors are great. I love the vanilla, the oak, the dark chocolate and toffee. The finish is milky.

This a great beer, probably ages well. I am just thrown by their desire to make this 16% rather than 12-13%. Just alot of booze.

On tap at The Bruery in Placentia, CA.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, caramel, toffee, smoke, vanilla, and cocoa aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel, toffee, smoke, vanilla, and cocoa flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast and smoke bitterness and an alcohol kick on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with a great balance between the smoke, vanilla, and cocoa qualities all around.

Serving type: on tap.

A big thanks to Jeff for this novelty. 750ml waxed and capped bottle into a Founders snifter. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a foamy 1 finger mocha colored head with good retention. Beer is pitch black with stringy and spotty lace with moderate stick and huge, oily legs. Blend 3 big beers and guess what the result looks like? A BIG BEER.

Nose is huge amounts of smoke. Chocolate, vanilla, booze, and honey round out the dense flavors. Aromatic and enticing.

Opens chocolate, roasted malt, smoke and bourbon. Huge booziness comes forward in the middle propping up vanilla, molasses, leather, oak, and sweet soy sauce and prune flavors. Dark fruit, fudge, and more booze in the finish and aftertaste. Pretty good. Interesting that you can taste each aspect of the blend that went into this.

Full bodied with low carbonation. Smooth and hot in the mouth and goes down syrupy and thick. Finishes hot and messy with a lingering, sticky aftertaste. Supports the flavor nicely.

I'm not a huge fan of the Bruery but their big beers have always been top-notch. This is no different and its an interesting take on blending 3 beers that have very distinct and prominent flavors. Worth trying!

Enjoyed a bottle of this at a recent bottle share. Smokey and the Bois is a blend of three beers that are exceptional on their own that combine to make a delicious beer. This is another hit from The Bruery, excellent beer and very tasty. A lot of malt, bourbon, and smokiness.
