Mash & CoconutMash & Coconut
Notes: This is our bourbon barrel-aged imperial brown ale, Mash, stretching to new levels. Mash & Coconut features nearly 400lbs. of toasted coconut per batch, which ratchets up the complex, native coconut character and complements the oaky and vanilla notes that are imparted to the beer as part of its extensive maturation in bourbon barrels.

On tap at The Bruery in Placentia, CA.

Pours a hazy dark orange-brown with no head. No lacing on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, caramel, toffee, vanilla, and toasted coconut aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel, toffee, and toasted coconut flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of earth bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and sticky mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with great toasted coconut characteristics all around.

Serving type: on tap.

750ml bottle poured into a Hoarders tulip

A- pours a deep chestnut brown color with a one-finger foamy off-white head that has short retention before settling to a ring around the edge

S- plenty of toasted coconut aroma up front, followed by sweet caramel, toffee & vanilla. Bourbon and earthy wood close it out

T- rich caramel and toffee up front give notes of tobacco, followed by some dark fruit notes of raisin & fig. Mid-palate gives some flavors of brown bread and brown sugar, along with a maple-like sweetness. The finish brings the bourbon barrel, with some earthy oak and plenty of bourbon. The coconut comes out on the linger, put it definitely noticeable. It tastes more like fresh coconut than toasted

M- medium-heavy body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that turns in to a creamy, warming finish

O- another solid variation of mash with plenty of coconut, even after aging a bit

look: medium dark copper. Big frothy white-tan head. messy lacing coats the glass. Just like the base beer.
smell: caramel, vanilla bourbon, and coconut. Really dug the base Mash and the vanilla variant. Like the vanilla, this one incorporates the new ingredient masterfully.
taste: as good as the nose. Like vanilla, even better than then base beer imo.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick, opaque consistency. There was an inch of foamy / fizzy, off white head that quickly dissipated. Pretty good lacing.

S: A big aroma of coconut, malt, bourbon, caramel, and vanilla.

T: Tasted of a bit of malt (not overly present), lots of bourbon (and the accompanying barrel), a bit of vanilla, lots of coconut, some caramel, and a tinge of chocolate. This is one aggressive, powerful flavor. The bourbon almost threatens to overpower everything, but it becomes balanced after awhile. Forceful, unique, and tasty.

F: A decent amount of carbonation with a sharp finish. Medium-bodied.

O: While this isn't a beer for everybody, it's still well made. Worth a look.

Review 1433

Today is a great day! I managed my personal goals with a win I am celebrating. This beer has been hibernating in my cellar since 2016. The beer is 50 degrees and served in a tulip glass. The pour of the beer produced a two-fingered head. The light tan foamy head dissipated quickly. The head left no lacing on the glass. The color of the beer is SRM 34, dark oil brown with mahogany hues. I was hoping for a firmer and longer-lasting head on this beer.

The initial aromas in the beer are coconut, roasted malts, burnt sugar, and earthiness. Nosing further in the glass, I smell bourbon, alcohol, molasses, raisins, oranges, wood, chocolate, leather, a hint of smoke, and malty sweetness.

The flavors in the beer are coconut, roasted malts, bready, burnt sugar, figs, earthiness, wood, chocolate, leather, a touch of smoke, raisins, oranges, fruity esters, phenols, and malty sweetness.

The mouthfeel of the beer is warming and chewy.

The body of the beer is full, low carbonation, and medium finish.

This barleywine is not cloyingly sweet and has a lot of character. Other barleywine that I have consumed was had a heavier malt body. I am torn here with this beer, I wanted that heavier malt body complex, yet I want the flavors of this beer. The coconut is there and does play well with other ingredients.. I did enjoy this beer.

Bottle: Poured a dark brown color ale with a large dark brown foamy head. Aroma of vanilla, bourbon, residual sugar and strong coconut notes. Taste is also a mix of strong coconut notes with some woody bourbon notes and some coconut notes with quite a bit of residual sugar notes. Body is pretty full with good carbonation with some warming alcohol notes. Intense but enjoyable when shared with friends.

Easily the best bruery beer I’ve had to date. A gazillion times more drinkable than poterie if you’re looking for something barrel aged and brown. I was expecting boozy, sweet, and thin, but this has just the right amount of heft and balance. Even the coconut is subtle but present.
