Madeira Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout

This version of Black Tuesday spent 18 months developing in madeira barrels. If you've never tried madeira, it's typically sweet, fortified wine from Portugal. The barrel component is apparent as the nose is enveloped with peach notes, followed by dark roast and hints of caramel. The taste experience is similar with a semi-sweetness that highlights bright berry flavors, a strong imperial stout body, finishing with a firm tannic structure.

Thanks to Caboose6 for this 12.7 oz. bottle dated 2021. It looks like a cute little BT baby.

Dark brown with a nose a little like a madeira-aged Coke. Odd.

Black Tuesday – Madeira Barrel Aged would never be taken for another beer. There’s the liver-bruising alcohol, sugar cane, madeira (man I’d love to visit the island, a nearly two hour flight from Lisbon, I checked last time we were there), & a faint echo of cognac. Not sure where that’s originating from? Like the cognac version, this drinks like a fine spirit being nipped in the study before midnight. Feels heavier than most BT variants & this one serving will do fine, thank you,

One of the weaker BT variants that I’ve tasted, but still a good, solid brew.

Muddled dark brown to mahogany with a thin tan head.

Though it totally shifts away from stout territory, or even any memory of regular Black Tuesday that I have, this is delicious. It's like a barleywine, and the madeira really amplifies that fact by highlighting dark fruit, nougat and sherry characteristics via a delicate warmth.

There's actually nothing unpleasant as far as bitterness or booze, it's relatively balanced.

12.7 ounce bottle, 2021 vintage, bottled on 03/11/21, 19.6% ABV. Served in a Black Tuesday chalice, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head that didn't stick around for too long. Small amount of lacing. The brew smells like dark fruit, red grapes/wine, Madeira, molasses, roasted malt, dark chocolate and oak. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also some burnt/charred malt, coffee, earthy and dark bready flavors noticeable too. Mouthfeel/body is full, the 19.6% ABV is well hidden here, and it's coating and a bit rich with a low/moderate amount of carbonation. If you like Madeira barrel aged brews then you'll probably like this one too. A pretty good Black Tuesday variant, I liked it!

This is a 2021 19.6% vintage.
Look: very dark brown. Some slight cola highlights when held directly to light. Sparse tan head on the pour.
Smell: rich brown sugar, madeira, nutty notes.
Taste: flavors are melded into a rich wonderful new thing in the taste, individual notes not as distinguishable.
2nd time with this. 1st time chilled to about 55 degrees. Tried my 1st pour this time at room temp, and it’s perfect.

A: Poured into a snifter to a black beer topped by a dense and slightly rocky finger of light tan head which fades slowly to a collar around the edge of the glass with minimal lacing
S: Smells of french oak, red fruits, and wine with some roasted malts, chocolate, and coffee
T: Taste is red fruits and tannic french oak on the front end with more sweet red fruits. Light oxidized flavor but it tastes like it belongs. More huge sweet red fruit notes along with some chocolate and coffee. This beer is very wine and barrel forward at this stage. On the swallow we get still more wine and red fruits, chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts with some lingering cocoa powder.
M: This beer is on the heavier side of medium in body with an almost watery feel on the palate. Carbonation is on the low end but adequate for the style while the beer has a drying finish.
O: This is a pretty wine forward variant so if you don't like wine barrel aged beers this one will not be up your alley. The wine barrel adds a really nice twist on the base beer but it overshadows the base beer in a lot of ways. It still brings a lot of flavor and complexity to the party which makes it enjoyable to drink and a nice change of pace. Well worth a try if you can get your hands on a bottle.

750ml bottle poured into a tulip appears dark brown in color with a khaki head thats quick to fade.

The aroma is lightly oaky and vinous, slight roast, vanilla and toasted coconut. As it breathes, it picks up more of a briney soy sauce character.

The taste is vinous than chocolate, vanilla, toasted coconut, caramel and lingering alcohol burn with a lite tannic feel that increase in its warmth.

This is medium to fuller bodied with moderate carbonation. Some pretty good stuff and a nice variance from normal BT.
