Style: American Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.80%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Freckle is a robust imperial stout that has been infused with the essence of an elegant Mexican molé. The dark, roasted barley in this 10.8% abv stout has been accented with a touch of rich chocolate and a hint of south of the border spice for our interpretation of the unique, sweet & savory sauce used throughout southern Mexico.

750ml bottle into snider. Bottles 1/20/2015.

A: Pours near black with a finger of soft dark brown head that left streaks of wispy lace down the glass.
S: Smells like mole with rich notes of chocolate and spicy roasted peppers. I get hints of tingly peppery spice with a touch of vanilla.
T: Taste is that of a chocolate stout with a subtle kiss of peppery spice. Smooth and integrated flavors, chocolate dominates, with more of a cinnamon spice upfront and a slight chipotle peppery flavor in the finish. Vanilla, brownie, fudge in the aftertaste. Rich and smooth.
M: Full body, smooth and soft mouthfeel, rich and fuzzy, velvety, full carbonation. Tingly spice lingers. Slight dark chocolate-like bitterness. No hint of alcohol. Very smooth.
O: A very smooth and flavorful stout that really does scream of mole. Delicious.

Smelled and tasted like ashtray. Neat concept, but it didn't work.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a Speiglau stout glass.

Poured a pitch black with slight red highlights at the edges. Tan dark roast head.

Aroma is incredible. Peppers, char, chocolate, finishes with a sugary chocolate icing almost like a delicious mole sauce or BBQ. I could smell this all day.

Taste is just as complex as the aroma, although not quite as enjoyable. Lots of char and roast chocolate chili at the end. Not as much of the sweetness on the aroma to balance, but still so much going on.

The combination of the aroma and taste is incredible. So much going on. Taste could use a little more balance but overall amazing.

A: Poured into a snifter to a deep black with a finger of dense tan head that fades quickly to a small collar leaving minimal lacing
S: Smells of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, cinnamon and a little bit of peppery heat
T: Taste is cinnamon and slight heat with chocolate, coffee and roasted malts. Swallow is more spice and cinnamon with chocolate and roasted malts with just a little bit of lingering heat.
M: This beer is fairly full on the palate with a velvety mouthfeel and adequate carbonation. The beer finishes on the dryer side of things as well.
O: This is a really nice stout. I'm not sure why it was put as an IRS since it's more American in origin in my opinion. The complexity is great and the flavors are killer. It's a shame they didn't hold some back to be introduced to a bourbon barrel.
