Chronology:24 is the fourth and final installment in a two-year long, four-part experiment with barrels and time. We brewed a beer rich and malty with undertones of brown sugar, toffee and toasted French bread and set it to age in bourbon barrels. Every six months, we took a quarter of the barrels, blended them and bottled them. This fourth bottling represents the flavors imparted in the base beer after 24 months of barrel aging.

Lesser of the series. Prefer the wee heavy version.

Another share that was supposed to be with rudzud
Pours a med fizzy off-white 1/2 finger head with med retention, no real lacing but good legs, very dark molasses brown color

Nose similar to the others but a bit more toasted vanilla oak, a bit more bourbon as well, some oxidation again with little paper but more waxy aroma, a bit nutty and some spice from the barrel as well, lots more caramel, toffee, caramelized sugars, etc, butterscotch, but a bit of a bourbon candy and nice barrel character

Taste brings a lot more sweet flavors out front again, loads of caramel, toffee, a bit of butterscotch, a little nutty, a bit of dark fruits again more like candied fig paste, some warming alcohol but not fusel, a bit of bitterness, more barrel than previous versions as well with some toasted almost buttery oak, vanilla tannins, little spice, and bourbon candy, light oxidation but not quite paper more waxy with a little port wine, dried dates, sticky finish, a bit of smooth warming alcohol, more caramel and toffee, and dried candied fruity

Mouth is full bod, rich and a bit syrupy, med to lighter fizzy carb, fair warming tingly alcohol

Overall the best of the series, as expected, the barrel came through the most and rounded the beer, most seemed to have dropped off, and this did a bit as well I can assume but it seems to be better than the others. Wish I could have shared the series with rudzud

750 mL bottle into tulip glass

Dark brown appearance, viscous with no visible carbonation, no head.

Wafts of burnt sugar and bourbon make the bouquet, ushered by ample alcohol volatiles. Stodgy aromas with nuances of toasted cocoa, vanilla and raisin.

Flavors are chocolate-forward, and less boozy than its older brethren. Oaky and smooth, velvety mouthfeel. Hints of carob and clove play off huge malty character, leading to a long, sweet finish.

A tasty, decadent treat. Seems the extra aging has made this one markedly smoother, but I saved a few bottles to do a vertical, so at some point I’ll confirm. Might let these age for awhile though.

750 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 5/27/2016. Pours hazy very dark brown color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy khaki head with poor retention, that reduces to nothing pretty quickly. No glass lacing, and a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, raisin, plum, prune, cherry, fig, date, apricot, red apple, and brown bread/dough; with lighter notes of licorice, molasses, cocoa, leather, tobacco, wood, peppercorn, herbal, grass, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Minimal booze in the aromas as it warms. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready malts, fruity yeast, and bourbon barrel notes; with big strength. Taste of huge caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, raisin, plum, prune, cherry, fig, date, apricot, red apple, and brown bread/dough; with lighter notes of licorice, molasses, cocoa, leather, tobacco, wood, peppercorn, herbal, grass, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Light herbal, grassy, peppery hop bitterness; and bourbon/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, dark fruit, cherry, apricot, red apple, brown bread/dough, licorice, molasses, cocoa, leather, tobacco, wood, peppercorn, herbal, grass, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malts, fruity yeast, and bourbon barrel flavors; with a solid malt/bitterness and bourbon/oak tannin spiciness balance; with no cloying sweetness after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitter/spiciness. Light-medium carbonation and extremely full body; with a very creamy/silky/slick/syrupy/velvety/bready, and lightly sticky/tannic mouthfeel that is nice. Mild increasing warmth of 17%, with minimal lingering barrel booze after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic barrel aged old ale. All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malts, fruity yeast, and bourbon barrel flavors; very smooth to sip on slowly for the huge ABV, with the mildly bitter/tannic/drying finish. This is definitely the sweetest beer I've ever had from them. It's surprising that the barrel didn't take over the beer like with the "Days Of The Week" series. This was barely boozy at all. Got smoother as it warmed up. Fantastic balance/complexity between super rich malts, fruity English yeast, and bourbon barrel presence/integration. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on style example as expected. Liked most of the Anniversary Old Ales a lot more.
