Style: Berliner Weissbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.40%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
At his core, Frederick H. embodies some of the elements you’d expect in a Berliner Weisse-style beer, such as a tart flavor profile from lactobacillus, a hint of brettanomyces and traditionally low ABV. He gets a little racy though, and gains even more funky and earthy notes from house cultures and fermentation in our oak foeders at Bruery Terreux. After nature takes its course, Frederick H. emerges with a bright, refreshing body, palate-cleansing tartness and au naturel rawness.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 10/27/2016. Pours slightly hazy medium golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger dense white head with solid retention, that reduces to nothing fairly quickly. Minimal lacing on the glass. Aromas of big tart/sour lemon, lime, peach, apricot, green apple, pear, white grape, hay, straw, oak, wheat, and cracker; with lighter notes of pepper, musty/leathery funk, white wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, oak, and light-moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tart/sour lemon, lime, peach, apricot, green apple, pear, white grape, hay, straw, oak, wheat, and cracker; with lighter notes of pepper, musty/leathery funk, white wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Moderate fruity/lactic tart/sourness and light yeast/tannic oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of sour lemon, lime, peach, apricot, green apple, pear, white grape, hay, straw, oak, wheat, cracker, hay, funk, vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, oak, and light-moderate pale malt flavors; with a nice malt/sourness balance. Lightly puckering, but not astringent on sourness. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a smooth, acidic, fairly tannic, and lightly creamy/grainy mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.4%. Overall this is an excellent Berliner weisse. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, oak, and light-moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink; despite the moderately strong acidity/sourness. This appears to be pretty similar to Hottenroth; but with more intense flavors and lactic sourness. A really enjoyable offering.
