Notes: This cuvée upended the competition at the Hoarders Cuvée blending tournament to be produced by The Bruery in 2017. Designed by Nathan Beckham and Alex Jacoby to mimic the flavors found in a pineapple upside-down cake, this cuvée is cast in a thick layer of our bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout, Black Tuesday, and a sticky-sweet glaze from other bourbon barrel-aged ales, including Mash, poured over pineapples. We then mix in vanilla, maple and almond flavors to create an incomparable cuvée that melts in your mouth. This is not your mama's pineapple upside down cake. Store it cool and let it warm before serving.

From 2017, obviously, so it's time to see what a bit of age has done to all of the additive flavors. Not a whole lot, as it turns out. For whatever reason, Bruery beers with added flavors seem to age well in my experience. Still plenty of vanilla and almond to provide a rich, cake batter impression, and the pineapple is subtle but still quite present. I don't get much in the way of a maple glaze, so maybe that's tailed off a bit. But overall, still top shelf and worthy of the Hoarder's name--this is a fun blend. It would be tough to go wrong with a blend of Black Tuesday and Mash, but the additives here really do play their parts well.

I find this beer to be an interesting one. Basic bourbon barrel flavors, but complex like Tesla eating dinner with just the right amount of peas. Yep!

Gold wax capped 750mL bottle acquired through The Bruery’s Society. Bottled. Served in a Bruery snifter. Enjoyed 1/26/18.

Pours a rich, deep burgundy with a two and a half finger cap of pale tan head. As with so many other high abv Bruery beers retention amounts to pretty much nothing. That cherry mahogany glow under the light is beautiful though.

Sweet, inviting aromas of bourbon, pineapple glaze, vanilla, marzipan, maple and caramel.

Layers of boozey, delicious flavor. Cooked sugar, bourbon, cocoa, pineapple liqueur, spirit-soaked oak, marzipan, vanilla and maple, all with a hearty helping of warming alcohol.

Syrupy full feel with light carbonation. The boozey sweet finish holds notes of bourbon glazed pineapple marzipan fudge cake.

These Hoarders Cuvées are a really neat concept from The Bruery. Allowing their “high rollers” to construct their own “melange” of sorts. Well this one is particularly delicious and I’m glad to have been one of the relative few to get to try it.

Murky-looking amber brown color with a fat finger of tan head. Dissipates to a thick crown with a wispy island in the center, but no lacing.

Sweet, barleywine-like aroma with bourbon, fig, vanilla, almond and light, cakey malt.

Sweet tasting as well, with maple and hints of pineapple, and a heavy hit of almond. A kiss of alcohol burn, a hint of bitter bakers chocolate and a dull, but surprisingly strong, hop bitterness in the background keep it from being cloying. There's some fig and other dark fruit -- almost like a mix of grape jelly and red wine -- that linger in the aftertaste.

Medium bodied, slightly sticky, slightly creamy feel.

This is supposed to be inspired by a pineapple upside down cake. Not sure I would have picked up on the pineapple in this if I didn't know to look for it. It's still a great, sticky-sweet multi-flavored barleywine mash up.

Split with JLindros.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice dark brown with a thin brown head that fades to leave light wisps and a thin halo.

S - Aromas of light barrel barrel coconut, some brown sugar, little vanilla and almond butter. Decent alcohol burn as well.

T - Taste is similar to the nose, nice vanilla notes, sweeter nutty almond. Good bourbon aspects and some coconut. Fair amount of sweet canned pineapple.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, a bit thin and boozy.

O - Overall this was a rather solid beer, it does deliver what it provides. Quite nice.

The brew is an amber brown color with ruby clarity when held to the light. A firm 2 finger khaki head rests atop retaining quite well.

Aroma of toasted coconut, maple, vanilla, oak and caramel. As it warms and breathes some fruity pineapple emerges.

Taste has a spicy oak compinent, pineapple, maple, caramel and bourbony booze.

Medium to fuller in body with ample carbonation. A pretty tasty sipper.
