Name: 10 Lords A Leaping
Brewery: The Bruery
Location: Placentia, CA
Style: B.B.A. Dark Wit Ale
A.B.V.: 13.3%
Date: 2017
I am drinking Barrel Aged 10 Lords A Leaping today using my Michelob Chalice. I served it at 46 degrees. Prying the cap off, this 6-year-old beer emits a lovely hiss of carbonation. The pour created a creamy, foamy, two-fingered, tan head with average retention. The color is brown, nearly black, charting around S.R.M. 34. The beer is opaque. The dissipation left no lacing on the glass. The appearance is average for this style.
The initial aromas are caramel, bourbon, oak, bready, chocolate, and baking spices. Swirling the glass again, I smell toffee, dark roasted cereal grains, floral esters, oranges, ginger, dried apples, and earthiness. The aromas are inviting and warm on the nose. Light phenols and yeast are perceived on the back end. Delightful aromas, no off-flavors detected.
I taste caramel, apples, bourbon, oak, cinnamon, oranges, toasted wheat, dark roasted malts, honeysuckle esters, ginger, cloves, bready, bananas, dried cherries, yeast, earthiness, toffee, and light chocolate. This is a change from what I have consumed lately; I am enjoying it. No off-flavors tasted, perfect aging.
The mouthfeel is carbonated with a warming finish. The body is medium-plus and has medium carbonation.
I am impressed; this beer is fantastic. The barrel-aged version amps up the non-barrel. The barrel-aged brings more depth and complexity to the beer. I am enjoying this beer!

375ml bottle poured into a tulip
A- pours dark brown in color with a one-finger foamy off-white head that reduces to a ring around the glass
S- smells of stewed cinnamon apples, figs, raisins, caramel, cinnamon, ginger, brown sugar, sweet cherries, slightly nutty with an undertone of bourbon barrel
T- sweet up front with Belgian candi sugar, quickly followed by an array of spices with cinnamon and ginger sticking out. Mid-palate brings out all kinds of fruit notes; raisins, figs, red grapes, stewed apples, sweet cherries, The finish brings out bourbon barrel notes, with more candi sugar and dark fruits sticking around on the linger
M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that continues into a slightly warming finish
O- a nice blend of spices, dark fruit and barrel

A: Poured into a snifter to a deep blackish colored beer topped by a dense and slightly rocky finger and a half of light tan head which fades slowly to a collar around the edge of the glass with minimal lacing
S: Smells of intense dark fruits and apples with caramel, vanilla, and some spice notes along with a little oak
T: Taste is dark fruits, apples, mulling spices, oak, caramel, vanilla, and some more estery goodness. Almost a funky banana quality. On the swallow there's more funky esters, spices, apples, dark fruits, caramel, vanilla and oak. With the spice and fruity funk this one almost tastes more like a rum barrel aged product than bourbon barrel aged.
M: This beer is close to being full bodied but it doesn't quite get there. Carbonation is slightly effervescent and maybe a little too high for the style while the beer has a slightly drying finish.
O: Overall this is an interesting beer. The flavors are pretty good and overall are in line with the style while the barrel aging adds some additional complexity. I can see how this one could be a little polarizing and past iterations of the series have fared better.

Appearance: Dark-brown color with a fairly generous sized beige head that gradually faded to a ring. the color looks very much like a good looking Imperial Stout. Another nice looking Bruery Christmas series beer.
Smell: Prominent Bourbon, moderate brown sugar/toffee notes, and mild spice notes. The barrel elements are definitely noticeable.
Taste: The palate features Bourbon notes, mild brown sugar/toffee, mild spice notes, and tannic oak notes from the bal-aging which help dry out the finish. The beer has a fairly complex taste profile where all the elements play well together. The alcohol presence is very subdued and just a background note.
Mouth-feel: On the lighter side of medium bodied with a medium level of carbonation. in light that it's a Belgium Strong Dark Ale vs an Imperial Stout the lighter body is true to style.
Overall: A well executed tasty beer. I had this one cellar-ed at 57F since I picked it up and I don't know how it was fresh but right now my bottle tasted fantastic. I have to give props to how the Bruery pulled off making a very tasty bal-aged BSDA.

Poured from fridge temp into a snifter. Pours nearly black with small amount of light brown head. Nose is caramel, apple, bourbon, raisin, and a bit of spice. The apples really come through in a strong way on the nose. Taste is really interesting. Can't say I am in love with the apple, as it adds a slightly strange taste. But, it's definitely apple! Bourbon, toffee, spice, red wine, bread, yeast, and a bit of milk chocolate. Alcohol is well hidden, and the mouthfeel is fairly medium bodied. Overall, a really interesting beer.

Great take on a BSDA. Pours a dark brown color with a fast fading tan head. No light gets through. Some lacing . Aroma is very pleasant. Malty. and aromatic. Taste is malty, sweet, with some oak and bourbon. The bourbon is subtle and doesnt overpower the beer. Plenty of spicing adds to the flavor as well as the aroma. Mouthfeel is rich, sweet and malty. Well worth a try
