Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
formerly known at Mischief #3

Mischief is a hoppy Belgian-style golden ale. This wickedly good golden ale is fiendishly dry-hopped with American hops to add a layer of complexity and mystery to its fruity, dry Belgian-style character. Citrus and resin diabolically combine with ripe melon, pear and slight peppery spice in a precariously effervescent mixture. Enjoy it, but you’ll want to keep an eye out. Gold Medal – 2016 Great American Beer Festival, American-Belgo-Style Ale.

16oz can poured into a chalice

=====

Look
Pours a “liquid gold” color; four finger frothy head with very good retention; Pretty clear with lively bubbles coming up from bottom

Smell
Coriander and spice; grain, yeast, floral, fruit; esters

Taste
Sweet, floral, spicy; Tart, with some young grapes; finishes bitter, a little astringent/citrus

Mouthfeel
Coarsely carbonated and finishes dry; Medium-bodied

=====

Overall
It’s a good beer with very original character and flavor but not my favorite—perhaps because of the balance; It finishes and lingers a little bit too peppery and spicy for me. I don’t think I’d get it again. For the same style (Belgian Pale Ale) I’d probably prefer Delirium, Duvel, and Pranqster. Purchased can for $3.99 in Southern California.

Poured from the bottle into a Bruery tulip glass. What? I've never reviewed this before? How did I miss this one? Off we go, I will ignore you no longer.

Pale orange amber body color, slightly opaque, with a real impressive rocky and creamy classic top three finger head. Bright white top, with creamy touching puck and island clumpy settling.

Great aroma. Touches leafy green hops, and faint aromatics of citrus and florals. Light touches of bready malt, even some crusty pastry sweetness accents a little bit of sprinkled sugar. Real nice aroma, but doesn't quite insinuate this is Belgian character.

Palate is just a real solid impressive joy. Full bodied but with light character and real fruity quality. Mixed berry and notes of peach and soft orange, to a mix of light apricot skin and chewy pith with no bitterness. Quenching mid palate that has a lot of leafy hop character, almost a chamomile tea sensation and soft incredibly SOFT tannic chew on the finish. Touches a hair maybe of sucrose like sweetness but it's almost hop centric in accent.

Very impressive brew. Skipped this for so long, looks like I just had it at the perfect time.

Copper with very little haze and lots of fine bubbled carbonation. Topped with a finger of white head.

Smells of soursop, phenols, and tropical fruit.

The taste follows the nose with a bigger punch of phenols, a light sweetness, a mix of soursop, pineapple and jackfruit.

Medium body with moderate carbonation.

Very smooth and well rounded brew for the style. Drinking in Redding, Sept 27th, 2018.

As with Share This Mole, poured from a 750 ml bottle, with simple but elegant decorations, into a goblet.

L: Even with a gentle pour, a thick layer of foamy bone-white rises to sit atop the surface of the hazy golden body. Through the liquid, blurry shapes and lights can be detected, but it is fairly opaque.

S: Unique and enticing. Typical Belgian yeast notes of spicy clove and white pepper covering an overripe banana, but following that, zesty hop character takes center stage, introducing juicy pear, quince, tart plum, mango, and honeydew, with a finish of dried sage.

T: It tastes much tarter than it smells, so if you're hoping for the syrupy texture and richness of a Belgian Tripel, you can stop here. This is more of a hybrid between a light Dubbel and a West Coast IPA.

Tasting notes start with tart quince, asian pear, and some plum, then a blast of warming clove and the associated astringent bitterness. After that, I don't taste much besides the clove and white pepper, almost completely dominating the sweetness from mango and banana. Finish is borderline eternal, and it's really boring, with just clove and sage lingering for over 15 seconds after a sip.

F: It has a satisfying medium bodied texture, but despite the tartness, there is almost no bite to speak of. Not what I'm looking for in a hoppy Belgian ale, personally.

O: Nice attempt. It would make an awesome candle, but I can't even think of a cheese to pair it with. Too perfumey and unbalanced on the palate. I give it a C+

Golden pour into a Bruery tulip glass, reasonably creamy head.
Smell is herbal and malts.
Taste is a mixed herbal Belgian bouquet with pleasant hoppy undertones. Somewhat sour, and there’s a slight hint of honey. All in all that makes it seem a fairly complex beer.
Feel: medium body/ medium carbonation. Slightly sticky. Finishes with a zesty herbal zing.
Pretty tasty stuff. Somehow seems odd having come from a can, but then again, any beer is better off when it comes out of a can.

A cloudy Albert on color with a white head. Fruity with apricot and Belgian character. Flavor is sweet with stove fruit, and a touch of tropical fruit flavor. Medium light body, with fairly high carbonation. Overall pretty tasty.

Nice golden opaque pour with a healthy amount of foam. Smell is sweet and slightly hoppy. Reminds me of honey almost. Taste is over lightly sweet and bitter. A bit bready and wheaty. There are some fruit notes as well as one would expect form the addition of hops, but they really don't add that much to the flavor profile. Goes down very smooth, but doesn't seem to have much body. Overall, nothing too impressive, but definitely a nice Belgian style and I would drink again.
