Oude Tart is our take on a Flanders Style red ale. It has won back to back gold medals in that category at the World Beer Cup (2010 & 2012) as well as a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2010. This sour red ale ages in oak barrels for anywhere from 6 to 18 months before being carefully blended to taste. The resulting beer is pleasantly sour with hints of leather, dark fruit and toasty oak.

Wow, I haven't reviewed this after about a dozen bottles of it over the last two years? Pours a pretty red, sizeable head on it, bigger than most flanders thats for sure. Aroma, nice tartness, cherry, wood, heavy wood, mild leather and earthiness at the same time.

Taste, one of the most sour flanders style beers. Much better than the typical stalwarts I hear mentioned. Great sour and fruit qualities, oak and leather restrained, but existent without forming a search party. Light on its feet for packing so much flavor.

There's a reason why this has won multiple golds at the World Beer Cup. Despite not being from the Flanders region, it is the prototype for the style these days. Takes the traditional style, makes it more lively, puckering, all good things.

2010 Release

Oude Tart pours a deep red color. It’s a little hazy, but plenty of light cuts through revealing really attractive crimson highlights. Carbonation looks very active and yields a tan head that stands nearly two fingers tall. It is extremely slow to dissipate. I’m not sure it completely will. Lacing was a little sticky, but light overall.

The nose seems a little weak. It’s not bad, but really needs more strength. It is very fruity. Apple, pear, and berry scents smell really nice. Cherry is noted, but doesn’t seem all that strong. There is a distinct oak aroma that adds character. It smells somewhat earthy and grainy throughout. There’s a hint of Belgian yeast, but it’s very subtle. Alcohol is masked extremely well. I’m not getting much at all there. It’s pretty good, just needs more strength.

The flavor is extremely impressive! It kicks off with a really nice blend of apple and berry flavors. It’s definitely sweet and intense. The fruit flavors are explosive and very tasty. The sour side follows. A tart, vinegary, cherry flavor emerges and tastes delicious. As far as tartness goes, it’s only moderate. That works for me. I wouldn’t characterize it as mouth puckering. There are some grainy, earthy notes throughout. A little oak is noted. It’s subtle, but adds character. Alcohol is blended well and doesn’t come through strong at all. Finishes fruity and tart.

Oude Tart has a lighter body. Carbonation is definitely active and perhaps even buzzy. Nevertheless, it feels rather soft and smooth. It’s definitely easy drinking. I’m having trouble not chugging it.

I’ve sat on this bottle of Oude Tart for a couple years. Since that time, it’s held up well. Oude Tart is a very tasty beer that impresses in just about every way. The nose might be a tad weak, but it delivers otherwise. I like that it’s not overly sour. It features a subtle sour/tart flavor that’s very satisfying. This is very impressive stuff! Definitely worth seeking out.

A murky reddish brown beer with a small tan head that settles rather quickly and no lacing. Tart and slightly musty aroma, sour cherries and oak, faint vinegar.

The flavor follows the nose pretty closely and is quite nice overall, typical of the style with more of an increased woody oakiness than encountered elsewhere. Sour cherry, some sweet malt, slight vinegar undertones, very mild musty funkiness. Nice acidity.

Medium-light bodied with lively carbonation and a semi-dry finish that’s very slightly puckering. Nicely tart but not over the top, an excellent take on the style.

Thanks to Beerness for providing this in a recent trade.

Poured into my Portsmouth Brewery tulip glass and a thin beige head forms and then quickly fades away. The beer is a dark amber color with some ruby notes. Not a touch of lace to be found.

Cherry hints with a ton of earthy notes. Slight notes of oak.

Certainly a classic Flanders Red flavor here. A slightly tart and slighty cherry flavored ale with strong notes of oak towards the back of the palate. The earthy notes in the aroma are present in the flavor, although not quite as pronounced. As it warms there is a light dark toasted bread crust flavor. Not burnt, but well done… A lingering cherry tartness is the last thought that lingers in your mouth.

Light body, light spritzy carbonation that brings the flavor to life. A refreshing brew with a nice complexity.

This is good and spot on for the style, but I am not sure it’s as special as noted in the score.

A: dark orange in color. Forms a clumpy, bubbly head that sticks to the side of the glass. No lacing. 4.0

S: Very aromatic with notes of tart cherries, unripe fruits, and oak. 4.0

T: A bit malty on the front end, then loads of cherries, with earth, and a mild malt vinegar to a lesser extent. However, the sourness is toned down and not at all overdone 4.0

M: Medium bodied. Tart. Very mild bitterness 4.0

O: Another very nice beer. Mild sourness makes this one easier to drink for the non-sour drinker. Can't say I would want an entire bottle, but a glass was nice. 4.0

750ml. Got this in the fall of 2011.
Lost Abbey tulip

A: Pours a deep reddish brown. It's darker than the other Flemish that we have tasted to this point Finger of tannish head. Good carbonation.

S: Mild funk. Cherries. Apple cider vinegar.

T: Wow, big tartness up front. It's really nice. Carbonation helps to clear some of the flavors. Nice dry finish. Aftermath you get some of the sweet oak.

M: Light to medium.

From the second bottling.

A: Pours a dark reddish brown with a quarter-inch light tan head which recedes to the rim leaving sparse lace.

N: Oak tannins, cherry pits, sour acetic/basalmic notes.

T: Mildly sour and tart, oak aging evident. Fruity with cherries and plums. Lingering sharp acidity. Complex with vinous aged red grapes.

M: Semi-medium body and light carbonation. Mildly tart and acidic on finish.

O: Quite nice. This is aging well. Should really blossom in a year or so. Time will do wonderful things with this, I hope.

Clear chestnut brown with a bubbly head forced by pour. The head disappears as soon as it forms.

Aroma is soft oak, sewage funk, tart fruit (cherries?). Tastes pleasantly tart, notes of balsamic vinegar, hints of funk, with a slightly bitter woody finish. Slightly alcoholic at times.

Feels unsubstantial... either the carbonation needs to go up, or malts should be present to carry the beer. Rather watery. Not bad but nothing that good either.

Drinks easier than Duchesse though, but I would take Rodenbach Grand Cru over it.

Poured from a bottle into a goblet.

Appearance: Pours a murky reddish brown with a half finger of off white head that fades to a ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Fruity vinegar with a strong oak presence. Some mildly sweet malt with a tart cherry note.

Taste: Malty but not very sweet. I'm getting the cherries, so tart that I'm almost getting raspberry. Some vinegar sourness with oak and a bitter, fruity finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with large bubbles and a slick finish. I feel like the finish should be dry.

Overall: I think this is a well done beer. They didn't go over the top with anything. I would have liked a dry finish.

Big thanks to Johnnnnie for this one. Opened up as a celebration on match day. Review from notes.

A: Pours a hazy brown with purple/burgundy tones to it. A small bubbly head forms upon pouring, but settles down quickly. No lacing.

S: Nice cherry upfront, with some light tartness and a little bit of funk. Slight oaky aroma comes out as it warms. There is a little bit of brown sugar and vinegar as well.

T: More cherry and vinegar, not as sour as the aroma indicated, but not really a problem for me. There is a little bit of grape and plum mixed in. More oak as well here.

M: Medium bodied with low to medium carbonation. Slightly mouth puckering and vinegary.

O: A good beer to celebrate with, one that my fiance was a fan of. Very tasty and easy drinking. Carbonation was slightly low, but I feel like it didn't really detract too much overall. In the end of the day, its how it tastes.

The beer pours a reddish brown color with good head retention and lacing. The nose on this beer is just wild, and is easily its best feature. I pick up considerable brown sugar, sour cherry, vanilla, grape skin and allspice. In combination, this beer really smells great. The flavor profile is pretty good as well, but is something of a disappointment are the aroma profile in this beer. The sour component really seemed to dominate, with not as much underlying spice and fruit as I was expecting (and hoping for). The beer is otherwise medium bodied, and the alcohol is well integrated into the flavor profile. The beer finishes well and was ultimately fairly dry, with a hint of spice and brown sugar in the sour flavor.

A nice enough beer, I just wished it tasted as great as it smells.

Opened the bottle and poured into a Corsendonk glass.

A: No head when poured. Signs of carbonation with small bubbles lining the glass and rim of the beer. Dark brown with a slight reddish hue.

S: Sour aroma present with cherries and tart fruit.

T: Nice sour flavor, not over the top.

M: Very lightly carbonated, not as carbonated as I expected.

O: An excellent intro to sour beer.

Epic Bruery sour/wild tasting, 3/4/2012

Side-by-side 09(?) and 11

09 - Carbonation is evident in the pour and a small head forms. Attractive red-amber color. Aromas of cherry and peach. Nice earthy flavor and high carbonation

11 - Darker red and less of a head. Aromas are more dark fruit and cherry. Super bretty taste, very dusty and earthy. Hard to believe this is the younger bottle.

One of the better beers of the tasting. I'd say 09 is superior, but I have hopes for 11 to evolve.

Shared a 1 PINT 9.4 FL. OZ - 750 ML bottle of this w/ STLWIll & Friends @ The Royale. Poured from the Orange/Yellow/Blue Labeled bottle w/ a Sword in between Oude & Tart & "VERZUUR" labeled below 750ML into a 12oz Snifter Glass. Is a 2011 Edition but has no bottled on/freshness date.

Aroma- A nice marriage of different types of sourness and funk. Barnyard and fruit are well pronounced and then oak finds its way into the background of the aroma.

Appearance- Pours a 1.5 finger head that has average retention. Has a dark amber body with red highlights. Leaves suds behind.

Flavor- Has a very dominant plum and cherry beginning that make up the taste. Sweet, oaky, and acidic all the way through. No hops and not much bitterness either. Semi-dry finish.

Mouthfeel- Light Bodied, Medium Carbonation, Light Puckering, and a nice tart finish with sweetness.

Overall Impression- I enjoyed this brew a ton but like to see how it ages... Some of the characteristics were a bit dull in this Flanders. I could see more complexity and funk coming out of this one a year or two later. Grab a bottle if you can!

A - Reddish cola, off tan head, leaves to ring fast. Some spotty lace.

S - Malty, some fruitty tartness.

T - Solid wall of cherry tartness. Full flavored, nice bittering twang.

M - Light bodied, good carb, nice balance.

D - Very drinkable even at this ABV.

Thanks to the f-in man, msulinski, for including this bottle in a wintertime trade. Had a sip of this at a tasting & needed a bigger bottle & lo! one shows up on my doorstep. 750ML bottle split with my wife after living at Town Hall & suckling on barrels all week.

Pour is wildly divergent: mine is dark brown, my wife's is dark red, from different levels of the bottle. Nose is big oak, raspberries, cherries, tart. Nice start.

Oude Tart cuts through the barrels like a German tank division through Polish cavalry. Huge oak notes trade light chatter with the searing tartness that lines the brew. Drought-dry. Fruit so present in the nose is tame to the point of absence. Earthy, slight vinegar, green apple, a bit leathery. Sippable.

Targeted to sourheads? No idea. But this is one fine, approachable sour, that doesn't cross the line into folding my face into right angles. Excellent beer & a standard for Flanders ales.

75 cl bottel poured into my cantillon tulip gkass

A: Pours a solid and clear dark brown with deep ruby highlights when held to light.
S: I can smell the tart fruit as soon as I pop the cap on this baby. Sour cherries, lemons, sweet brown sugar, hints of vinegar, light sherry notes.
T: Taste is a bit more sour than the nose lead me to believe. Huge lemony tartness and red grapes ( cabarnet sauvignon ? ) Oak with hints of barnyard funk hit right up front. Sour cherries and a hint of sweetness sweep across the gullet before finishing with a lingering sweet sour and funky aftertaste.
M: Medium body and level of carbonation, tart acidic mouthfeel.
O: I really enjoyed this one, I’m glad I got to try it.

750 ml bottle shared by colonelforbin. Thanks Mike. Pours a dark brown with a small off white head that has good retention and leaves a decent amount of lacing on the glass. The aroma is cherry, oak, lactic acid, and a bit of funkiness. The initial taste is sweet with cherry and has a lactic tartness to it. The oak also comes through as well is some acetic acid. The finish has a bit of astringency and leaves some lingering oak on the palate. Medium body. Low carbonation.

Pours a dark amber with a thick-off white head. Moderate head retention with barely any lacing. Head fades to a light brown film and a halo of fine bubbles lining the edges.

Cabernet grapes, raspberries, some anise. Light aroma of leather horse saddle and funk. A little vanilla in there too.

Lots of fruit - raspberries, cherries, blackberries. Slightest touch of bitterness with no noticeable hop flavors or aromas. Orange peels show up once it warms a little.

Smooth/slick and coating. Low carbonation fades to none, contributing to the smooth mouthfeel. Finishes nice and dry.

There's a great flow from the aroma to the finish. The progression of flavors just works really well. I dig it.

Deep brown with small hints of red around the edges. Head bubbles up like champagne or a soft drink, hangs on for a few minutes and then tumbles to just a ring with no lacing.

Sour, coffee, cherry, musty aromas that promise extreme happiness.

Amazingly balanced and fantastic sour beer. Cherries, coffee, leather, green apples, slightly funky, even some sweetness that lingers far after the drink is done.

Perfect carbonation and medium body keeps it from bogging down and becoming cloying. Ideal for this style.

Brilliant sour.

Bottle 2011

A- Pours a one finger off white head that dissipates to a bubbly layer on top, dark brown burnt orange color, opaque.
S- Really nice aroma, sweet sour tartness, cherries, sour apple notes, slight oak in the aroma.
T- Very enjoyable, nice cherry notes, dark fruits, spice, nice tartness, sour apple, vinegar, oak characteristics from the barrels, really balanced overall.
M- Medium mouth feel, decent carbonation, smooth drinking, coats the palate, dry finish.
O- Really enjoyable beer from The Bruery. Not disappointed at all, really easy drinkability, and decent amount of complexity.

first: let me say thank you to BeermeX2 for this bottle!

second: well i expected to cork this and continue it tomorrow...but then again i also expected to leave this aging in the ole beer cellar for a bit too...and we see how well that worked out =)

A: Beautiful clear mahogany... on initial pour head was thin and laced a bit less than i expected...but overall on par with other flanders i have poured

S: red wine vinegar initially, with hints of apple peal and citrus rind...had hoped to pick up cherries in the smell

T: this leads me back to the "wanted to cork it and finish tomorrow" portion of my tale....at first i was overtaken by citrus peel, which i found odd...not enough to make me stop drinking but it was prominent...the sweet notes of white grape, plum and cherries did come thru in the mid....and the finish was dry and puckering...strong notes of red wine vinegar and oak...the second glass being the PERFECT temperature allowed more of the mid to come thru...still abundant citrus peel tartness throughout tho

M: carbonation i'd where i expected it to be...creamy and coating with a seriously dry finish...lovely!

O: at the end of the bottle now...sadness has taken over...what at first i compared to others in the style and wanted it to be more like them, in the end made Oude Tart stand alone as its own version of a delightful style of beer! a wonderful treat!

Very dark brown with some red hues on the edges. Active, brown head that fizzles out quickly to a hazy cover.

Acetic sour aromas with an oaky earthiness. Hints of cedar. Some fruit esters, mostly cherry, but they're masked by the vinegar aromas. Very nice nose.

Tart and acetic at first, with flavors of vinegar and sour cherries. The sourness slowly fades, revealing a malt and toasted oak flavor. Leather and some pepper. Finish has a good dose of cab sauv flavors, with lots of tannins.

This is a great beer, one of the best of the styles I've ever had. The Bruery can sometimes be hit or miss, but when they get it right, it's damn close to perfect.

2011 bottle.

Pours a clear brown color with amber highlights around the edge. Slight head, no lacing.

Smells of leather, raisins, cherries, vinegar, apples, and some citrus acidity.

Taste opens with the leather and fruit notes moving into a smooth sour vinegar flavor. Slowly comes back to the leather and tobacco notes moving into a clean oaked dry finish. Very nice taste progression.

Mouthfeel is moderate with a good amount of carbonation.

Overall, its not living up to the hype, but still damn good.

A lot darker than I was expecting. Brown body and murky, hint of amber when the light is hitting the glass. Little bit of a tan bubble head that fades away quick. Fair amount of lacing as well but it isn't sticking only when the beer is swirled or moved around.

In the aroma I'm getting sugar coated raisins, tart dark cherries, raspberries, and vinegar notes which are blended in quite nicely. A touch of black pepper in the back and good dose of funk, but not overpowering the nose.

Flavors consist of tart dark fruit/sour cherries, red wine vinegar, and a bit of oak. The mouthfeel is very incredible here. Starts with a touch of sweetness, in the middle a bit of dryness occurs which becomes pronounced in the finish, and leaves behind a light sweetness on the palate...smooth all the way through. Dryness and mild peppery flavor is reminiscent of an earthy red wine.

Overall a solid take on a Flanders Red Ale. The mouthfeel, red wine like qualities, and mild tartness work well. A bit of age should add some nice changes to the beer. Very easy to drink and enjoyable.
