Style: Flanders Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Oude Tart is our take on a Flanders Style red ale. It has won back to back gold medals in that category at the World Beer Cup (2010 & 2012) as well as a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2010. This sour red ale ages in oak barrels for anywhere from 6 to 18 months before being carefully blended to taste. The resulting beer is pleasantly sour with hints of leather, dark fruit and toasty oak.

On tap at The Bruery poured into taster. Appearance is hazy brown-red with a tall white head that settles to a ring. Some lacing. Aroma is a little funky, but mostly sour, led by tart cherries, red wine vinegar, wood, and leather. Taste is strongly sour with acidic and vinegar notes. Some woody bitterness and malty sweetness offer some balance. Medium bodied, slightly slick, lively prickly carbonation, long puckering finish.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a globe glass.

L - Medium brown color with some red highlights. Very clear. Head initially light tan and fluffy, but quickly disappears. Little lace, but some "legs" on the glass.

S - Huge aroma of sweet berries contrasting with leather, horseblanket and other sour notes. Low graham cracker, brown sugar, plums and raisins in the background. Very complex.

T - The Brett. flavors are totally dominant. Sharp, puckering acid sourness on the tongue and the back of the throat. Leather and horseblanket. Very little malt and no hops flavors come through.

F - Thin to medium body with acidic astringency. Low, almost imperceptible carbonation. Solid hops bitterness and light alcohol burn.

O - This is a very assertive sour beer. In the original Belgian versions, I prefer examples that have more malt complexity and less over-the-top sourness, but this is a well-made, clean tasting beer that has its own good qualities.
