Style: Flanders Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Oude Tart is our take on a Flanders Style red ale. It has won back to back gold medals in that category at the World Beer Cup (2010 & 2012) as well as a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2010. This sour red ale ages in oak barrels for anywhere from 6 to 18 months before being carefully blended to taste. The resulting beer is pleasantly sour with hints of leather, dark fruit and toasty oak.

Pours an opaque, slightly reddish chocolate brown with a fairly thick, though effervescent, light tan head. Sour apple dominates the strong aroma. Flavor is very tart - you may exercise facial muscles you never knew you had! Underlying hints of caramel and oak support the bold tartness. Texture is smooth and firm, if not too fizzy. Pucker up, sweetie!

750ml bottle, split

To me, this is just too damn sour. It's hard to focus on any other component of this beer - definitely the most sour beer I've ever had (a lot). Berry, red fruit, but really just acidic and incredibly sour. A little more palatable as it approaches room temperature but still a bit extreme. Not my thing at all.
