Notes / Commercial Description:
Oude Tart is our take on a Flanders Style red ale. It has won back to back gold medals in that category at the World Beer Cup (2010 & 2012) as well as a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2010. This sour red ale ages in oak barrels for anywhere from 6 to 18 months before being carefully blended to taste. The resulting beer is pleasantly sour with hints of leather, dark fruit and toasty oak.

A: Poured a nice deep rediish orange color. Quite vibrant for the style. A finger and a half of white head with a touch of lacing. Quite a bit of visible carbonation.

S: The nose was quite nice. A mix of oak cherries and a mild sourness. I did get a little bit of leather is the nose which is always interesting and appreciated. The lactic acid was present throughout but was never overwhelming which I think turns people off from this style.

T: The cherry taste really makes this beer for me. The oak and lactic sourness were there but were never overwhelming. Only got a touch of that big vinegar taste associated with the style. It is there but nice and mellow. A little bit funky and I got a bit of white pepper and some other spiciness as well. Really complex.

M: Medium body a little bit syrupy. They nailed the carbonation on this one. Well carbonation without being abrasive as some wilds can get.

D: A really boring and great beer. It had so much going on but it was drinking like a champ. I would recommend this beer to anyone looking to get into the style.

A- Pretty standard flemish color, dark brown and ruby tones.

S- Tart dark fruits and oak.

T- High on the sour meter, sour and carbonated at the front, then the sweeter, fruitier flavors come through with a good amount of woody oak. Finishes with a great oaky and very subtle vanilla aftertaste. This beer should make you pucker some.

M- Carbonation dissipates moderately fast, mouth feel is more watery.

O- Outstanding Flemish sour, not too sweet, oak did seem to dominate my palate as I got to the end of the bottle, but you can definitely pick out the complexity of each layer of flavors. If there weren't so many more beers out there to try and I had a lot more money I would buy 2 or 3 more. You can't go wrong with a sour from The Bruery.

Pours out a very dark murky red (almost plum) with a half inch of head, no lace.

You can smell this before the cap is completely off, sour cherry, grapes, oak, funk, sugar and earth. Amazing.

Super tart right off the bat. Sour cherry, pear and apple kick me right in the face. A slight sweetness balances it out well. Still an ass-whooping of sour. Nice medium to light body.

Love, love, love it. Need one for the cellar now!

Bottle from 2012

A: poured into a Duvel Tulip to a deep brown with a slight red hue. the beer is topped by a fluffy and rocky two finger light tan head that fades to a nearly invisible collar around the edge of the glass
S: smells of sour cherries, vanilla, funk and oak
T: taste is sour cherries, with a strong acetic sourness, a bit of funk, some vanilla, slight caramel and oak. swallow is more sour cherry, funk, and oak
M: lighter side of medium in body with soft and adequate carbonation. this beer has a drying finish
O: This is a fantastic beer and a great representative for the style. It just doesn't get much better

1rst Release

750ml bottle into a Tulip glass

A- Pours a nice deep dark red with tons of carbonation streaming up making a nice 2 finger fluffy khaki head that sticks around. No retention whatsoever or any legs.

S- Sweet funk and barnyard up front with tons of dark cherries, green apples and vinous grapes. Also getting notes of leather, balsamic, and musty oak. Could live in this glass.

T- Up front the first thing you notice is the strong sour funk from the yeast. To follow some really nice flavors of vinegar, cherries, grapes, leather, and a slight bit of musty sweet oak to top it off.

M- Medium bodied with a good amount of bubbly carbonation and a strong sour dry finish that I love so much.

Overall this is hands down my favorite sour. So well balanced and so flavorful there's nothing bad I can say about this beer.

Poured the 2014 edition into a tulip glass in 2016.

L - Beautiful red brown color. Subtle, but present, head.
S - intense and spicy sour scents. Very much on the woody side rather than the citrus side of sours. Deep, complex, rich.
T - packs a punch of sour, again with very obvious oak influence--probably more than I've tasted in any recent beer. I also see what the label means by "leather and dark fruit." Again, very much on the dark side of sour. And the sourness lingers on the palate.
F - sharp and appropriate.
O - all around consistent and lived up to high expectations after a high price tag and holding this one for a while.

Appearance
Murky deep brown/red with a short head that quickly dissipates.

Nose
Sour cherry, red wine, vinegar and naked oak.

Taste
Tons of sour pie cherries and vinegar. Notes of red wine and musty basement. Some citric lemon and a hint of leather. Light notes of oak and sawdust.

Mouthfeel
Light-medium bodied and lightly carbonated. Moderate-heavy sourness.

Overall
A fantastic Flanders Red! I enjoyed every second of drinking this and had a frowny face when I ran out. :(

Poured into a Cantillon pint-style glass. This bottle has been in my cellar a year.

The body is reddish brown, with a tan head that easily pours to a half inch. Head dissipates a bit, but retains an eighth inch cap of foam on the beer throughout, with just some small patches of lacing.

Smells of leather, tea, cherries, old wood. Nice complex nose.

First sip transports me to Belgium. First sip is dark cherries, tea and baked apples, then lots of flavors burst forward all over the palate with sweet, sour, and bitter going on. The cherry flavor intensifies into a superbly fresh tartness, that lingers on through the dry and spicy finish. There is some cinnamon spice, and some vanilla and old wood that gives this a nice smoothness and maybe its name. Just a bit of bitterness and tannin, maybe from cherry pits.

Body is on the lighter side, and the carbonation gives this a lovely creamy, mousse-like mouthfeel.

There is not much to fault in this beer. The Belgians sometimes complain that the Bruery is merely imitating their beers, but this sort of imitation is the highest form of flattery. Light in body, high in flavor, and with a nice ABV level, this is a superbly drinkable beer.

Appearance: Arrives with a cloudy copper color and a nice head that leaves plenty of lacing behind

Smell: Wafts of tart cherry and green apples

Taste: Yeasty phenols, up front, followed by sweet and tart cherry/apple flavors; the tartness persists after the swallow, though there are some earthy and leathery elements underneath

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Drinkability: Masterfully handled fruit character that is well balanced between the sweet and tart elements

I had this beer twice in about a week. Both times out of a bottle, both times were amazing. Last night at the Bruery dinner at Brasserie Beck it was served in a wine glass.

Beer is brown and cloudy and forms a thin brownish head of small and tiny bubbles that leaves a little lacing on the glass. I don't know what the carbonation level is but it looks great.

Aroma is sour and sweet. Woodsy with a hint of funk. Its not as strong smelling say as a 50 year old Goudenband but it smells great.

Light in body and pretty carbonated on the mouth. Good palate cleansing beer overall. Forward mild sweetness and back a nice tartness. Moderate acetic character with a brightness to it. Some citric and lactic character as well. One of the best bruins out there.

Big thanks to Brian and Tyler for giving me a chance to sample this. Apparently it's a brewery only bottle release slated for about a month away. Can't wait.

This is a beer style that's somewhat hit or miss for me. I've loved a few, and hated quite a few. The sweet/sour vibe is real tough to nail.

And nail it the Bruery has. Major props. Pours a brownish reddish ruddy hue, with an inch or two of an off-white head. Seems nice and bubbly.

Smell is slightly woodsy, with some interesting muted tart fruit notes, and a definite vinegar sourness. Smells pretty darned good.

Tastes pretty darned good, too. This beer furnishes the sweet and sour mixture of a Flanders Red/Oud Bruin better than any beer I've had before. Often times the sweet fruit component is sickly or medicinal, or the tart component is too thin or one-note. This has robust, tart cherry/vinous aspects to it along with a wood-sy ... oak??? .... background that blends really well with that tinge of sweetness. I liken it to a cross between a Rodenbach and La Folie wood aged, though it really is pretty unique in its own right.

I predict big things for it. Eminently drinkable, nice lively mouthfeel.

Received this brew from zestar and have been pretty eager to try this bad boy. I enjoy The Bruery's beers quite a bit and hopefully this doesn't disappoint. Drank from my Ithaca Excelsior tulip while watching the Superbowl. Go Colts!

Appearance- Pours a dark crimson brown with a super nice one finger fizzy off-white head. A fairly decent cap and collar is maintained the entire beer but unfortunately no lacing is able to cling to my glass.
Smell- Nice vinegar like tartness just bursts out of the glass. If I didn't know better I'd say it was aged on sour cherry's because it has a nice fruity aspect. Lots of tart green apples and white grapes as there is almost a wine like side to the nose as well. It's fairly earthy as well with some tobacco and toasted wood mixed in for good measure.
Taste- Oh that's all sorts of nice. It's lightly sour with a red wine vinegar aspect as well as plenty of earthy wood and leather. A nice fruity side of the beer is apparent right away with some of that cherry I got in the nose along with rhubarb and green apples. Definitely a bit of funk in the taste as there is a bit of leather and mushroom. The wood is lightly tannic and woody with hints of vanilla and caramel in the finish. The beer isn't boozy or too acidic either. It all works really nice together.
Mouthfeel- Medium to light body with a nice crisp bite of carbonation. I could use just a hair more body.
Drinkability- Pretty damned tasty stuff and EXACTLY what I was hoping it would be. The beer has a nice solid base and the perfect level of sour. Really tasty brew that I'm glad to have the opportunity to try. Thanks much Jeff!

amazing flanders, really sour right from the get go. Lot of cherry and vinegar as you would expect, but the oak aging tweaks it down leaving you ready for more.

Pours a deep dark maroon, or maybe what could also be described as a dark copper color. Thin head with bigger bubbles that dissipated quickly.

Smell is tart, sour, acidic and vinegar. Smells damn tasty for the style.

Tart and sour, lots of acidic vingar, leather, oak, and horse blanket. Very tasty, dried fruits seem to come into play here as well. Plums, cherries and raisins.

Bitter, smooth and acidic. Very good.

Very nice beer, good drinkability, terrific example of the style.

Deep rich Amber brown colored body. Head is a biscuit toasted light brown. Nose is gorgeous with tones of stone sour, pixie stick and bready malts. Lemon peel is there as well. Taste is abruptly tart and really gets the jowls going. Tannins play with the palate to add a nice sharpness. Really nice sour beer that is not for someone who doesn't like truly sour.

Served a deep, auburn colored body with only a slim, bubbly covering on top. Tart, acidic fruity aroma...cherry, vinegar, brown sugar, dry floral notes, and a warm spiciness. Juicy, tart flavor: sour apple, berry, light wood, some wine, and not too much sweetness from the malt. Dry and lightly effervescent making for a super refreshing beverage. Very, very satisfying and delicious.

SOUR.

Great nose, very dark look, very thick and opaque.
Not extremely carbonated, medium size bubbles, and does not develop a head. Smells woody, sour. After tasting it, it is very sour. One of the more sour beers I have tasted, it is definitively sour. It starts sour, and the sour tastes continues to the end. It doesn't turn dry or hoppy, it is pure sour.
A fermented concoction of berries.

A: Copper body, can form a velvety-looking oak-colored head, but fades quickly. No carbonation visible but some sediment is apparent at the end.

S: Clear tart cherries, maybe faint wood in the back. Simple, but powerful and satisfying.

T: Fantastic sour character, sour cherries are supremely refreshing without any detectable sweetness. Fantastic long finish, possibly with a note of spice on it? Not sure where that's coming from, but it works.

M: Light bodied, lively carbonation but smooth, very low viscosity. My only complaint (with anything of this beer) is that it leaves my teeth feeling a bit gritty.

O: Incredible. Unabashed sour character, with clear, natural cherry notes that last on the palate, the barrel aging surely contributing to the sourness and the smoothness. Quality throughout. I wouldn't think twice about spending my money on this beer again.

On-tap at Brewvival.

Pours a reddish-orange color with a thin white head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of tart cherries and berries with good amounts of funk, lighter amounts of oak, and minuscule amounts of vinegar.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Tart fruit flavors up front that have just a hint of sweetness to balance them out. Midway through the sip a good deal of funk comes into play and carries through to a mildly tart ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a solid thickness with active carbonation.

Drinkability is also very good. The tart and sweet levels are just right so that this one's very easy to drink.

Overall I was a big fan of this beer as it does a very good job of straddling the tart/sweet line. Well worth a shot.

750ml capped bottle, shared at a small tasting by thebouch01 - after having a few samples of this at GABF (and being a huge lover of the style) i was looking for more.

A - poured with an inch of loose, bubbly and slightly creamy light tan colored foam. the beer is moderately cloudy, and a wonderful deep ruby & black cherry color.

S - cherries, vanilla, and oak supply the sweetness as vinegar, hay, lactic acid add the character.

T - begins with a crisp, slightly vinegary sweetness which brings along with it cherries, vanilla, sweet tart candy, red grapes, oranges, and peaches. oak adds a touch more sweetness and body. lactic acid clings to the back of the tounge. complex and delicious.

M - effervescent, light crispy body. very, very dry finish with lingering fruity sweetness, tart, and vinegar acidity.

D - big fan of this one. refreshing yet slightly abrasive (with deliciousness) at times. would have no problem sipping on a whole bottle of this myself.

A - Pours a rich amber brown with a luxuriously creamy head. Not much lacing.

S - Cranberry, oak, lemon peel, faint vinegar and leather. Some barnyard funk.

T - WOW. Just really creamy and rich at first, then bam -- it's on -- with tart, tangy cranberries and cherry. Lemon and lime zest intermingle with brown sugar and vanilla. Sour apples bring up the rear.

M - Absurdly soft and creamy considering how puckeringly tart this beer is. Nice long finish with an endless parade of flavors unfolding.

O - Impressive on all fronts. A truly special beer.

Served around 50º as recommended by the bottle.
Full pour into a Duvel tulip, it generates 2 fingers of light tan foam, the color of foam padding yellowed with age. The head is dense, and lasts about 5 minutes. Random spotty lacing. Hazy reddish chestnut color.

Softly acetic nose, hints at wet barrel staves and some mineral notes. Dark berries... currant, blackberry, tart black cherry flavors, some yogurty lactic character. Full and savory, stimulates the salivary glands like none other. Very nice aftertaste of woody cinnamon spice and oak dryness. Cherry pits and dry fall leaves.

Enjoying this very much, but still have to give top honors to my faves Haandbakk and Oerbier Reserva. Makes a nice pairing with a washed rind cheese.

Pours a reddish color with a small somewhat orange head.

Aroma is full of tart fruit with some vinegar. A bit more of a malt backbone than I'm used to for this style along with some earthy spiciness.

First flavor is of sour cherries. A little bit of vinegar, but somewhat subdued. The earthiness also peaks in and is a pleasant contrast with the sourness. Some oak is also present.

Somewhat creamy mouthfeel with good carbonation levels.

I really enjoyed this beer. I was surprised the vinegar tones were subdued and complimenting rather than overpowering. Lots of good flavors are packed into this one that go together well along with the nice creamy mouthfeel.

Latest batch purchased from The Bruery Provisions. Poured into my Bruery tulip.

A few people have noted carbonation issues, but my bottle was nicely carbonated. Minimal head. Smell is fantastic. Sweet cherries and vinegar on the nose. Acidy. Love it. Taste confirms the nose. It's called "tart" for a reason. This is a fantastic brew. Color is a reddish brown.

Mouthfeel and body is pretty nice. The light amount of carbonation makes it even better..

Oude Tart is pretty famous and it's no wonder why. It's an outstanding beer. Cheers

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a snifter. Acquired from my awesome BIF friend, ufmj. Thanks man.

A- Pours a muddy brown, slightly cherry body with a fizzy white head that reduces very quickly and leaves no lacing or retention.

S- I get a lot of musty funkyness, sour grapes, leather, sour cherries, basement, and a distinct woddyness which is characteristic of barrel aged sours.

T- Starts off with a big acidic punch of sourness - lemon juice, vinegar, acetic acid, sour cherries and white wine. Immediately following is a musty, leathery, old flavor. The finish shows notes of wood and maybe some caramel.

M- Medium-light body, especially for 7.5% abv. The sourness makes it mildly easy to drink. Quite refreshing.

Overall a very nice Flanders ale. Very, very similar (I don't think I could tell the difference to be honest) to some of the better known American Wild Ales like Russian River's supplication and consecration.
