Oude Tart is our take on a Flanders Style red ale. It has won back to back gold medals in that category at the World Beer Cup (2010 & 2012) as well as a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2010. This sour red ale ages in oak barrels for anywhere from 6 to 18 months before being carefully blended to taste. The resulting beer is pleasantly sour with hints of leather, dark fruit and toasty oak.

Enjoying this one in order to distract me from Butler's gallant defeat. Good fight Bulldogs, this one is for you.

Appearance- A rich, walnut brown. It looks almost black until held up to the light. Hints of amber. Two inches of slightly tan, soapy, frothy head. Settles into a nice quarter inch cap. Very clear. A pleasant hue. Not much lacing to speak of.

Smell- Lots of tart vinegar. Plenty of tart cherries and sour apple. A very pleasant funk. Definitely some oak as well. But not too woody. Very nice for the style.

Taste- A nice tart funk. Plenty of sour cherries. Some over-ripe apple as well. There is a strong oak character. Quite vinous. There is a malty, oak hint on the finish. Something more substantial, make it more of a "brown". The acid is for reals. The slight nuttiness on the finish is not my favorite. Some pleasant red currants, reminding me of Consecration. More acidic up front, wished it carried throughout.

Mouthfeel- Lots of nice carbonation. A good, firm body. Surprisingly robust. Excellent.

Drinkability- Pretty good, but the somewhat heavy body, and the strong acidity makes it a little tough.

This is a very nice beer. I certainly wish I'd purchased more when I had the chance. A really nice beer. I'd be very interested to see how it ages.

750mL bottle from Bullock's (Woodstock, GA). 19.99. No bottle date but this was released fall 2012. Served in a wine glass.

Pours an almost muddy red brown with less than half a finger dark cream head which quickly recedes without leaving any lace.

Smells crisp tart, lemons, vinegar and sour fruit.

A crazy, complex, puckeringly tart mix of lemons, sour apple, cherry skin, vinegar. worchestershire sauce, woodsy oak, leather, earth, brown sugar and must. No alcohol at all and just all around great.

Dry,puckering, medium light body with sharp, crisp carbonation.

This has the distinction of being the first sour beer that I've thouroughly enjoyed. Very complex. I'm looking forward to trying the cherry variation.

750ml bottle.

A: Clear brown. Slightly reddish. No foam.
S: Toasted malty. Blue berry. Grape.
T: Moderate toasty. Medium and round sourness. Dry. Low bitterness. Tart like aftertaste, and it retains.
M: Medium body. Low carbonation.
O: Unfortunately, I was unable to find much oaky characters. The overall tasting texture is round and pleasant, though a little too simple.

Pours a murky red-ish brown colour with a cap of a of white head. Huge sour lemon, tart cherry notes followed by tannic red wine, some caramel, brown sugar and slight roastiness. One of the best Flanders I've had from outside of Belgium.

Got this one at Hill Farmstead. 2013 vintage. From notes.

A - Deep red colour, Good carbonation leading to a head that fizzed away very fast. Never left any lace or retention.

S - Tart cherry, sweet fruit juice, a little woody, dark fruit.

T - Nice tart cherry with sweet fruits there too. Lot's of acidity to finish with a complimentary woody note and some sugar.

M - Strong carbonation, light body, tart finish.

O/D - A well made Flemmish Red. A step below Rodenbach vintages, but definitely showing similar qualities. Tasty and easy to drink. Worthy of the hype and price tag.

Had a sample of this on-tap at Hop Cat in Detroit, Michigan.

It's a good beer ... it's a great beer, really, but I cant help but say that if you've had one Bruery sour, you've had most of them. Excuse my ignorant-to-sours palate, but honestly, there are just a lot of the similar flavors. I do love their yeast or whatever the hell they use, though... this is (of course) puckering, with a nice bit of oak barrel character and some dark fruit and malt sweetness. I'm glad to have tried this beer, but I just would have liked it a lot more had it been my first Bruery beer. At this point, they're starting to taste too similar and just not worth their $20 a 750ml price tag. Regardless, if you like sours, you'll like this one -- Bruery still has some of the best out there.

Large 2 finger beige head, sparkly, quickly fading. Brew is a dark brown until held up to the light, which reveals gorgeous red highlights and a surprising clarity, with tons of bubbly action.

Tart and slightly funky, a lot of oak and sour notes in the nose. Dark fruit, lighter grains.

Extremely tart and sour up front, giving way (but never fading) to a smooth sweetness in the middle, and finished by a slight funk and sharp sourness on the end. Immediate pucker; sweet notes include red grapes and prunes, and nuts. Back-end carries a ton of oak and a nearly vinegar sour quality.

Up front pucker, and a slightly harsh vinegar finish; mostly smooth throughout. Medium-light feel, but it's still a slow drinking beer.

I don't feel that this beer stands out as an exceptionally good Flanders Red, but it's still an extremely tasty beer. At the price, I think I'd rather pick up a Rodenbach; if prices were equal, I still think I'd rather pick up a Rodenbach, but again, this is a good beer, no doubt.

Pours a dark rusty copper tinted brown, little to no head. Scent brings moderate amounts of vinegar, with cherry, leather and dark bread. Taste has initial rush of vinegar tartness, develops with cherry, slightly vinous, apple, leather and dark yeasty bread. Medium bodied, lower carbonation than many in the style - a good thing. Solid, not quite spectacular.

A: Ruby brn, hazy, minimal but fluffy white head

T: woody, grapefruit juice, little bit of vinegar

M/D: good mouthfeel, crisp, and very dry.

Overall: Nice, refreshing and tart. Not too sour. Seems balanced and a good example of the style.

I poured from a 25 ounce bottle into a tulip, dark brown pour, slight white head. Lots of oak, and cherries on the nose. Very tart, notes of cherries, oak, vinegar, linering tartness. The beer is refreshingly tart, acidic, medium in body. A very enjoyable flanders red, no problem finishing the entire bottle.

one of the better examples of the style from the united states, I have no idea how ive not had it do date. well, yes I do, its over 20 bucks a bottle, and therefore prohibitively expensive, but its the holidays so what the heck. the color is a murky dark red, darker than raspberry jam, lighter than traditional brick red, with one nice inch of white bubbly head on it. it smells of fresh and dried red fruit, from cranberries with their tartness to cherries with their sweetness, even prunes or raisins with their wrinkly gumminess. its lovely all the way through, with a ton of acid making my mouth water for a taste. the flavor is great too, all the fruit into one really sour brew. its got that classic flanders front of tongue acidity, almost too much, and this is a bottle to share for that reason. it puckers me right up, demanding perseverance from my taste buds. long dry finish, didn't think that was possible until this beer. the fruit is nice, the red malt is bigger, and the ph has to be real low. well carbonated body makes it fizzle and snap in my mouth, and the acidity prevents major drinkability. I am intrigued enough by this beer to drink a lot of it, and its quite enjoyable, but at this price their are other serviceable options to get my flanders fix. top quality as always from the bruery.

Had this one during the 'We Want The Funk!' tasting that was graciously hosted by beermeX2! Big thanks goes out to beermeX2 for sharing this one with the group! I was lucky enough to get to try the Oude Tart with Sour Cherries awhile back, so let's see how this one compares... Served from bottle into a Mikkeller flute. Poured a reddish brown with a one finger light tan head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, sour, slight funk, cherry, and fruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, cherry, funk, sour, and slight tart. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. The key difference between this brew and the other was that the cherries aren't nearly as pronounced in this one. This cuts back on the sour/tart aspect of this one a little bit. However this one is still quite enjoyable. The aroma and flavor here are quite well balanced and keep you guessing on what the overwhelming note will be the next time you go in for a sip. Definitely worth trying or getting your hands on.

Poured from a 750mL bottle into a tulip glass. No bottling date found.

A: Pours a slightly hazy dark brown color with ruby red highlights in the light. One finger light brown head. Plenty of carbonation evident.

S: Sour funk...vinegar...easter egg dye.

T/M: A nice tartness up front. Thin bodied. Highly carbonated. Tartness lingers in the back of the palate...makes your teeth clench. Some oak tannins. Some dark fruits...raisins, plums. More tart than expected, but I dig...

O: A pretty fantastic sour. I don't get a ton of the oak aging, but it's in there. Pretty dominantly tart...with some mild dark fruits. Still...a very nice American sour ale.

Bottle poured into a tulip glass, 2012 release. Beer pours a dark cola brown with half a finger of loose off white head. Head dissipates quickly, no lacing or remaining head. A few bubbles visible at the edge of the glass.

Nose is red berry and cherry, acetic acid balsamic vinegar, sharper lactic acid sourness, a brown sugar sweetness, light woody notes.

Taking a sip, brown sugar and cherry, then a hit of balsamic vinegar and sour red berry, a light almond flavor, and red wine tannins. Finish is dry, with a light sourness from sour fruit and lactic acid.

Light to medium body with a good amount of sharp carbonation that lightens the effect of the sourness.

From the second bottling.

A: Pours a dark reddish brown with a quarter-inch light tan head which recedes to the rim leaving sparse lace.

N: Oak tannins, cherry pits, sour acetic/basalmic notes.

T: Mildly sour and tart, oak aging evident. Fruity with cherries and plums. Lingering sharp acidity. Complex with vinous aged red grapes.

M: Semi-medium body and light carbonation. Mildly tart and acidic on finish.

O: Quite nice. This is aging well. Should really blossom in a year or so. Time will do wonderful things with this, I hope.

Had a couple of these tonight at The Bruery when they opened it for tastings today. They ended up running out of it the same day they opened it to the public.

About an inch of white bubbly head. Reddish brown in color with little retention or lacing.

Has a tart, mildly sour nose with definite oak tones. Some vinegar notes as well, but nothing of the level of Duchesse De Bourgogne for example. Sour, but not a sour bomb by any means.

Taste is similar to the nose and is quite nice. Has oakey and vinous qualities taken from the barrels it was aged in for 18 months.

Mouth is on the dry side with mild astringency. A nice carbonation level. Medium body and pleasantly drinkable.

A pleasure to drink this.

A- Half inch tan head on a dark red/brown body. Splashy lacing, collar left.

S- Slight sour/tartness. Fruits like cherry/strawberry.

T- Tart aftertaste, hard to pick out bourbon barrel notes. Would guess at 8 to 9%ABV.

M- Highly carbonated. Medium to medium-thin mouthfeel.

D/O- Very refreshing Flemish Red. We all found it to be similar to New Glarus Enigma. Thanks Beerandraiderfan.

Thanks to the f-in man, msulinski, for including this bottle in a wintertime trade. Had a sip of this at a tasting & needed a bigger bottle & lo! one shows up on my doorstep. 750ML bottle split with my wife after living at Town Hall & suckling on barrels all week.

Pour is wildly divergent: mine is dark brown, my wife's is dark red, from different levels of the bottle. Nose is big oak, raspberries, cherries, tart. Nice start.

Oude Tart cuts through the barrels like a German tank division through Polish cavalry. Huge oak notes trade light chatter with the searing tartness that lines the brew. Drought-dry. Fruit so present in the nose is tame to the point of absence. Earthy, slight vinegar, green apple, a bit leathery. Sippable.

Targeted to sourheads? No idea. But this is one fine, approachable sour, that doesn't cross the line into folding my face into right angles. Excellent beer & a standard for Flanders ales.

Bottle 2011

A- Pours a one finger off white head that dissipates to a bubbly layer on top, dark brown burnt orange color, opaque.
S- Really nice aroma, sweet sour tartness, cherries, sour apple notes, slight oak in the aroma.
T- Very enjoyable, nice cherry notes, dark fruits, spice, nice tartness, sour apple, vinegar, oak characteristics from the barrels, really balanced overall.
M- Medium mouth feel, decent carbonation, smooth drinking, coats the palate, dry finish.
O- Really enjoyable beer from The Bruery. Not disappointed at all, really easy drinkability, and decent amount of complexity.

2013 Version

A - Pours a dark reddish-brown with a two-finger off-white foamy head. The head fades rather quickly leaving some very light lacing.

S - Aroma of tart cherries, vinegar, and leather.

T - The flavor starts tart immediately with vinegar upfront. The sourness is toned down mid palate by tart cherries, malt sweetness, and oak. The beer finishes sour with lots of lactic acid and vinegar.

M - Medium bodied with low carbonation. Very crisp mouthfeel with a dry finish.

O - This is a strong Flanders Red from the Bruery. Lots of bracing bitterness with just enough sweetness for balance.

2011 bottling. I've had this previously at KBS Day 2012 but only had time to get tick it as a "had". Time to correct this issue.

5-6 oz. poured in a Russian River Belgian glass on June 8th, 2012.

A - Dark, ruby-rosewood coloring with a soft single inch of offwhite head. Good retention for a sour with great lacing to boot. Light alcohol legs.

S - Astringent pitted fruits, including dates and cherry skins. Balsamic vinegar. A touch of some spice and clove, either from the barrel or from the yeast. Twinge of oak and very light caramel malts.

T - Plenty of sourness here, but it's pretty well-rounded. More ripened fruit acedic notes. Balancing malt bill near the backend. Aftertaste is a good blend of vinegar, brown sugar, and bready malts.

M - Medium body (a bit heavier than typical for style), appropriate moderate-high carbonation, very dry finish. Definitely makes your mouth water starting at mid-palate through the aftertaste.

D - Like it even more than my first sampling back in March. This is a superflavorful, somewhat-accessible, sour base from the Bruery that makes me yearn a bit for the sour-cherry variant.

Reviewing from notes taken at our sour tasting.

A- pours ruby red in color with a shade of murky brown. A fingers worth of a off white head. Decent retention and a bit of lacing.

A- dark cherries and raspberries. Hints of the oak and some funk.

T- the fruits are nice and subtle. Not a real sour taste, it's more tart than sour. There is a bit of sweetness that plays well against the acidic tartness. A bread componet is also present.

M- medium bodied with spot on carbonation. The acidity provides a tingle in the back of my throat. The finish is tart and pretty dry.

D- I could have easily done this one solo. An easy drinking sour. Not nearly as sour as some of the other brews we cracked, but overall a solid brew that I would seek out again.

Poured a copper more red than brown, with some decent head that dissipated quickly. Smelled of exactly how the bottle described it, leather, cherry, apple, and caramel.

Tasted great, the sour cherry and hints of apple notes mixed with a roasty leather. It is quite sour which I expected for a Flanders red. Flavors blend nicely.

Mouthfeel is great, the carbonations helps the strong flavors come together. I actually think I liked it better after I let it sit and warm for a while.

Overall a fantastic sour that's best when at a warmer temp than fridge in my opinion.

Poured a copper body with large head that dies quick and leaves minor lace patches down the glass.
The aroma is very acidic as I catch the tartness/acid real quick along with touches of funk and dark fruit.
The beer is sharp and sour, not pungent, but you will get your fill of tartness that can be sour, acidic or like vinegar depending on preference.
Fruit flavors are mild but I do get something akin to sour grapes or black cherry, that along with some oakiness, add some complexity, balance and sweetness to beer so it's not just a sour mess.
Really enjoyable sipping sour that isn't too sour and keeps you coming back for more.

A: Rusty menstrual red. Mocha side foam head.

S: Rusty cherry, leather, brett, and port royal

T: Sweet and sour, funk and sour, good.

M: Tart and bracing. Very fine little bubs of carbo.

O: A phenomenal Oud Bruin from a great American brewery. Superb stuff.
