Oude Tart is our take on a Flanders Style red ale. It has won back to back gold medals in that category at the World Beer Cup (2010 & 2012) as well as a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2010. This sour red ale ages in oak barrels for anywhere from 6 to 18 months before being carefully blended to taste. The resulting beer is pleasantly sour with hints of leather, dark fruit and toasty oak.

figured I'd crack it since I've never had it out of the bottle. 2011 edition for the sake of formality.

A: Foamy thin ring forms pie crust ruffles on the edge of the glass. There's not too much in terms of lacing, but there seems to be a mild movement of the foam towards the body. The bubbles are slightly tinged brown, but still with a favoritism towards whites, like a dirty T-shirt. Cherry stained mahogany body with a core of volcanic rock. Looks really great.

S: Boom right away huge lactic funk presence that makes me excited. Thick cherry skins that pop out like inclusions in a rich home made jam. slightly hide-like finish that definitely makes me think about how fresh this is. The cherry's seem dowsed in a high end red wine. Slight red wine vinegar in the tail end.

T: Huge leathery plum that explodes into a kriek based jam. The bottle is fresh but the combination of yeast and barrel gives a musky old cherry flavor that marries fantastically. I can see why some people say that cherries are a natural addition to this beer, as a mild almost filler linger acts as a bridge between bursts of fruit rollup dark fruit flavors. Love the plum and cherry notes in here.

M: Feels a bit lighter in the mouth than I'd like, but it drinks very well. Light mouth with a temporary visitation to the light-medium side with the exploration of plum/prune/leather flavors. The acetic linger gives an illusion of medium fullness as well, but I would definitely say this is lighter in body. Especially as you let it catch up to room temp.

O: This beer has really great flavor, but definitely doesn't fit too well into the style. Dark jam, lactic funk, and cherry skins in red wine are all pronounced in flavor. This feels like a deconstruction of the style by a master chef. I am definitely a big fan of this beer, but I wish the volume would be turned up a bit. I would love to try the cherry version. Something is missing, but I finished a bottle without even trying to. If you like lactic yeast then you're in for a treat.

750ml capped bottle at fridge temp poured into a snifter.

pours out a dark, grapey, blood reddish color, a bit cloudy. thin light tannish head fades to a ring.

smells quite dry and tart. a bit of cherry with lots of earthy, lactic, slight barnyard funk, a hint of dark fruits.

big sour lactic funk. earthy, slightly barnyard, musty. some cherry and a bit of a winey, berry flavor. a slight rich caramel malt balances the intense sour just a bit, almost maple syrup like, very nice.

very dry and tart, acidic. lots of lingering sourness. medium to heavy in body.

what a solid beer, better than most traditional belgian examples. i really love that big sourness and that subtle hint of maple sweetness. id love one of these for the cellar, age would do this wonders.

I think Sean brought this to share, but not really sure.

A - Reddish brown colored beer with a tan head that dissipated to a ring. Minor stick left on the sides.

S - Wood, vanilla, cherries, with a little bit of vinous quality. There's a lot of acetic acid and tart notes here.

T - Cherries, acetic acid, a little bit of lactic acid. There is a little bit of barrel presence and a tannic finish.

M - Medium bodied with active carbonation.

O - Good beer. There's a limit to how much you can really drink of it, but it's still enjoyable and something I'd drink again.

2011 bottle poured into multiple tulips. Thanks to Scott for sending a couple my way!

A: Opened with almost no sound and poured the same. Absolutely no head, even with a vigorous pour. Murky body, brown and ruby colored, no lace and no retention (obviously). Bleak, sad looking beer to be honest.

S: Oak, vanilla, cherry, dark grapes, tart fruits. A certain acidic quality comes through in the end which I expected to be here. It's actually a very good smelling beer despite how things started out.

T: Cherry and dark fruit tartness is immediate, followed by the barrel aging flavors of vanilla and oak. It's slightly acidic towards the end of the palate. Some faint citrus notes are in the finish, leaving a bit of a dryness on the mouth into the linger.

M: Seriously under carbonated, this is the absolute pitfall of this beer. If I move the beer in my mouth enough, I do get some bubbles. A touch dry in the linger, expected.

Look, I understand this is bottle conditioned and that with time it will carbonate more and get more tart. However, it's a complete shock to me that The Bruery would ship these bottles out to consumers like this to enjoy fresh. There is no way this is how the beer is supposed to be. I'll be sitting on my other bottles, and hopefully they'll take a complete 180 in a year or so.

A: Murky brown ruby red with a light tan head. Retention is ok and lacing is about the same.

S: Sour grapes and tart cherry. The bouquet has just the slightest touch of acetic acid.

T: Mild acid overall and almost no vinager. This suggests the skin of young green table grapes before they have sweetened. Also subdued tart cherry and Meyer lemon flavors develop. Awesome stuff.

M: Soft, subtle, frothy.

O: Very good but more mild overall than I might have expected. Sour flavor is most definitely there but it is a very elegant one.

Brownish reddish - sort of a rusty ruby color. Small layer settles on the top.

Cherry and oak. Quite a pungent smell and it's very nice. Sweet cherry mixed with other sweets and a bit of citrus.

Yum. Orange peel, vanilla, cherry, oak. Medium to low amount of sour - very nice. Taste is instantly agreeable, all the flavors work perfectly together in this one - not too much or little of anything.

Light to medium bodied, light carbonation, very dry with a piney finish.

This one caught me by surprise, even my non-sour drinking friend was enthusiastic. One of my new favorite sours for sure, a future classic.

Poured into a tulip.

Dark, dark brown with some ruby highlights. Almost looks black unless held to light. Two-three fingers of off white head.

Smells of vanilla, oak, leather, dark cherries, cinnamon, cloves, some other spices I can't quite identify, brown sugar, banana bread.

Taste follows smell, more lactic sourness than acidic sourness, again in the taste there is banana bread, brown sugar, vanilla, oak, woody tannins, dark fruit (dried cranberries/raisins). Quite a unique taste experience.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, tartness is middle of the road as well for the style, carbonation is low, the mouthfeel is quite smooth in general.

Quite an amazing beer. My first inclination is to compare this to Supplication. Definitely a bit more round, woody, and less sour than Supplication though.

On-tap at Monks. Philly Beer Week 2010.

A: Dark red-brown body. Almost bordeaux colored. Thin off-white head forms and then quickly recedes. Just the slightest bit of residue left on the glass.

S: Rich, sour cherries. Hearty dose of oak, funk, and general acetic acid notes. Slightly spicy.

T: Delicious. Sour cherries take center stage and are well complimented by oak and its complimentary vanilla and tannic qualities. Leather, red wine, and a bit of earth. Slight vinegar contributions.

M: Medium bodied with gentle, velvety carbonation. Lingering sour finish.

O: A truly wonderful flanders style brew.

A dark brown and cherry red with glowing red edges. Thin half-inch light tan head atop. Pretty.

A powerfully aromatic sour. There's plenty of sweet fruit aromas, particularly cherries and grapes, along with a mellow woody aroma. Very tart nose.

A delicious sour with lots of cherry and wood character. Balanced, sweet, tangy, woody, spicy, then more sweetness. Delicious.

Medium body, lip puckering, no alcohol presence. Perhaps could benefit from a touch more carbonation, but I'd only be nit-picking.

An absolutely fantastic sour. Great beer!

Poured from 2011 vintage bottle into Bruery tulip glass.

Appearance: Mahogony in color, cloudy, nearly no head, minimal lacing, very flat.

Smell: Tart, slightly funky, oak, vinous, red/dark berries, cherries.

Taste: Cherries very prevalent, oak, honey, mead like in the middle, tart finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, tart, very flat, next to no carbonation.

Overall: Good flavor. Good balance sweet, tart, & oak flavors. Lack of carbonation kills it though. Overall, I was pretty disappointed.

Poured into a tulip glass from a 750ml bottle.

A - A loud hiss is heard as the cap is removed. It pours a nice dark amber color with a nice ecru head that is of medium density. There is some nice active carbonation with each pour. The head is retained for a while but actively dissipates to a thin mat.

S - Strong tartness. Balsamic vinaigrette. Sour fruit notes with some cherries and some nice slight vinous notes. The funk is awesome. There are some tobacco notes as well as some nice woody oaky notes. There are some nice mild flowery notes as well as some nice dark fruit slight sweetness that is inviting. Slight molasses notes as well.

T & M - Starts off with tons of tartness. Very sour funk notes. Then there is a slight dark fruit sweetness that pops up just enough to tame the sour beast. Its a real sour beer that doesn't make you pucker too much. There are some nice woody notes that offer some spice as well as some mild dark cherry and slight caramel sweetness in the middle portion. As the beer finishes the tartness pops back up along with continuing wood notes. There are some leathery characteristics as well as some funk notes. This is a great beer. Top of its class in terms of the style.

O - Very good beer especially as it warms when the sour notes taper down a bit and the more complex dark fruit notes begin to show up.

Appearance: Dark reddish brown color with a moderate light beige head.

Smell: Tart cherry and mild acetic notes.

Taste: Tart cherry fruity notes and some faint leather notes presented with a balanced sour and tart presentation

Mouth-feel: Body is on the lighter Medium side with a fair level of carbonation.

Overall: This is the crazy thing. The first bottle of Oude Tart I opened from my allocation I thought it was low on carbonation and the flavors muted compared to the previous batches. Not so with the bottle I reviewed. It was flavorful, had good carbonation for the style (I found the 2nd bottle had more carbonation than any of the Marron Acidifie bottles I've had) and compared favorably to the Oude Tart's I've had on draft and bottle in the past. Was my mind playing tricks on me when I opened the first bottle? I can't call it, but the bottle I reviewed rocked!

Latest batch purchased from The Bruery Provisions. Poured into my Bruery tulip.

A few people have noted carbonation issues, but my bottle was nicely carbonated. Minimal head. Smell is fantastic. Sweet cherries and vinegar on the nose. Acidy. Love it. Taste confirms the nose. It's called "tart" for a reason. This is a fantastic brew. Color is a reddish brown.

Mouthfeel and body is pretty nice. The light amount of carbonation makes it even better..

Oude Tart is pretty famous and it's no wonder why. It's an outstanding beer. Cheers

On tap at The Bruery. Pours a very murky, dirty water-looking, reddish brown with a small, off white head that disappears quickly. A ton of fizzy bubbles. Scent is acidic vinegar tart notes with a lot of wood and brett. Cherry really comes through as it warms. Taste is initially tart cherries with red wine vinegar. Followed by dark malt flavors and a HEAVY wood backbone. This is the woodiest flanders style ive ever had. Delicious. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, creamy, and nicely carbed. Drinkability is high. Overall, this beer is very complex and tasty. Glad i came!

A: Dark red brown hue. Solid two fingers of beige head. Decent retention and a smattering of lace left behind.

S: Mild sour cherries, oak, leather, faint vinegar. Nothing too powerful but enough to keep me interested.

T: Again the sour cherry is mild. The oak and leather are a bit more present than in the nose. I'm wishing it was more sour.

M: Medium body with mild carbonation.

O: Just another Flanders. Nothing real memorable and certainly not sour by my standards.

750mL bottle poured into a tulip. Thanks to Kegatron for this one!

(A)- Pours a deep and dark almost blood red/mahogany color. Produced a giant effervescent tan head that dissipated to a good layer of froth. Some lacing.

(S)- Very dry. Nicely smooth yet funky oak up front. Bits of vinegar-like fruits. Bits of Brett. Rather vinous.

(T)- A great similarity to the smell only far more complex. A hefty soured vinegar bite up front that flows into a harmonious dry oaky vinous funk. Finishes with a great sour acidity character. Damn tasty.

(M)- A nice carbonation level and a great balance. Fits the style very well with a big oaky and sour finish. I am liking this very much.

(D)- A superb Flanders. Easily one of the best examples from the states I have had thus far. Wonderfully oaky and sour; just the way I like it. Very well done.

1rst Release

750ml bottle into a Tulip glass

A- Pours a nice deep dark red with tons of carbonation streaming up making a nice 2 finger fluffy khaki head that sticks around. No retention whatsoever or any legs.

S- Sweet funk and barnyard up front with tons of dark cherries, green apples and vinous grapes. Also getting notes of leather, balsamic, and musty oak. Could live in this glass.

T- Up front the first thing you notice is the strong sour funk from the yeast. To follow some really nice flavors of vinegar, cherries, grapes, leather, and a slight bit of musty sweet oak to top it off.

M- Medium bodied with a good amount of bubbly carbonation and a strong sour dry finish that I love so much.

Overall this is hands down my favorite sour. So well balanced and so flavorful there's nothing bad I can say about this beer.

Pours a dark amber, almost brown with a soft egg-shell colored head with nice carbonation and lacing.

Aromas of funky, dark red vinous grapes, vinegar with hints of dark cherries and sour apples. As it warms there is almost a slight sweetness to the fruits combined with more barnyard funk and earthy raw mushrooms to round things and a light sweet maltiness.

The tastes begin with dark cherries and green and red apple skins. More dark red wine flavors of red grapes, vinegar and oak. The earthiness and funkiness emerge more as it warms as well.

The mouthfeel is fairly medium to full bodied and finished crisp but not too dry and puckering which I appreciate. Much more drinkable than a La Folie or other overly sour Flanders style ales.

Overall this was a nice treat and I am glad that I was able to sample. A great American interpretation of a European classic. Well well balanced drinkable. Would definitely drink again but I don't NEED to have it and don't plan to seek it out for a repeat visit. Very tasty and highly recommend; especially if this is style is your wheelhouse.

Poured into a Cantillon pint-style glass. This bottle has been in my cellar a year.

The body is reddish brown, with a tan head that easily pours to a half inch. Head dissipates a bit, but retains an eighth inch cap of foam on the beer throughout, with just some small patches of lacing.

Smells of leather, tea, cherries, old wood. Nice complex nose.

First sip transports me to Belgium. First sip is dark cherries, tea and baked apples, then lots of flavors burst forward all over the palate with sweet, sour, and bitter going on. The cherry flavor intensifies into a superbly fresh tartness, that lingers on through the dry and spicy finish. There is some cinnamon spice, and some vanilla and old wood that gives this a nice smoothness and maybe its name. Just a bit of bitterness and tannin, maybe from cherry pits.

Body is on the lighter side, and the carbonation gives this a lovely creamy, mousse-like mouthfeel.

There is not much to fault in this beer. The Belgians sometimes complain that the Bruery is merely imitating their beers, but this sort of imitation is the highest form of flattery. Light in body, high in flavor, and with a nice ABV level, this is a superbly drinkable beer.

750ml capped bottle traded to me from user mashmaster. thanks again! drank from my duvel tulip. very excited to try this after having it at EBF this year.

A- the pour is a murry/hazy brown colored body with reddish highlights. there is a small eggshell colored head on top that has just above average retention. small spots of lacing are left on the sides of my glass.

S- the first thing i pick out of the nose are cherries and vinegar. this is going to be pretty sour. some other various berries show up also. a little bit of the barnyard funk i love from wild brews. some oak shines though towards the end.

T- the taste starts out with moderate levels of vinegar/acid before moving to the fruitier side. cherries, plums, and other random berries. not as much noticeable funk in the taste. a little bit of the barrel comes through towards the end.

M- the beer is sour without being too overpowering. very nicely done. the body is on the lower side of medium with an active carbonation. not overly dry either.

O- i really enjoyed this. one of the better brews ive had from the bruery. this is something id gladly seek out again. the alcohol is masterfully hidden.

Had this one during the 'We Want The Funk!' tasting that was graciously hosted by beermeX2! Big thanks goes out to beermeX2 for sharing this one with the group! I was lucky enough to get to try the Oude Tart with Sour Cherries awhile back, so let's see how this one compares... Served from bottle into a Mikkeller flute. Poured a reddish brown with a one finger light tan head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, sour, slight funk, cherry, and fruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, cherry, funk, sour, and slight tart. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. The key difference between this brew and the other was that the cherries aren't nearly as pronounced in this one. This cuts back on the sour/tart aspect of this one a little bit. However this one is still quite enjoyable. The aroma and flavor here are quite well balanced and keep you guessing on what the overwhelming note will be the next time you go in for a sip. Definitely worth trying or getting your hands on.

Poured into a wine glass, revealing a murky ruddy brown body under an airy and dying yellowish head. Smells sweet and sour with tart cherries and molasses.

Tastes less pungent than it smells, but refreshingly so with a mealiness and light sour presence. Meaty, savory. Mouthfeel is gentle with even mouth-filling carbonation to round out the medium-heavy body. Thickened with air. Very drinkable, as a meal or otherwise.

Overall I quite like it. A well-rounded beer.

A steady pour into my Lost Abbey Teku glass produces a three-finger thick, pale brown tinged, dark tan colored head. The beer is a concentrated, dark brown-amber color that shows a hazed, cranberry red hue when held up to the light. The aroma is huge with a bright, tart, super fruity, berry like character that is backed by a touch of nutty oxidation like character. The tartness is all lactic at first, but once I start to dig around there is a hint of acetic acid spiciness that also boosts a touch of vinegar (not quite as rich as balsamic, but certainly fruit leaning) character in the finish. The finish has a dry, cracker like grain character as well as a toasted whole grain note that adds a wholesome bread like character to the nose. Other than the tartness, this beer is relatively clean; meaning it isn’t overly funky, which is certainly in line with a traditional Flemish inspired beer (at least modern examples of such). The malt, oxidation and tartness all combine to provide a character that I want to describe as earthy for some reason. As the beer warms some acetone like character starts to become noticeable in the finish.

This still has quite the spritzy carbonation despite sitting in my glass for the last 10 minutes; it foams up a fair amount as it rolls across the tongue, which counteracts the viscous character from the oak and lactic acid contribution that provides this beer a definite texture. The dominant lactic tartness throughout is again anchored by a hint of acetic acidity in the finish that is fairly light and at just about the perfect amount (it is far less than that found in Rodenbach Grand Cru). There is a toasted oak character that provides a woodiness as well as some tannic astringency towards the finish. The red wine barrels come through quite well here, not just with the oak, but also with a deep, supporting fruitiness that provides a definite berry character that is understated but powerful in some way. The toasted oak character mixes with a solid toasted malt character that tastes of brown, whole grain bread and whole grain cracker notes that seem caramelized, but without any real sweetness (if that makes any sense). This beer tastes quite dry to me, but I have a feeling that is because I had a chocolate chip cookie a half hour ago. The whole grain / dry-caramelized malt character starts to come out more as the beer warms up.

My second pour of this sees me noticing the fruitiness quite a bit more again, b/c it is still cool and there is also a hint of sweetness to this brew that my palate is finally able to detect; flavors of strawberry (accentuated by the touch of acetic acid noticeable here) as well as the red-wine notes are noticeable. When the beer is cooler the astringent oak character is a bit more noticeable, it really softens up quite a bit as it warms. Actually the red wine character is quite a bit more noticeable when the beer is on the cool side too; really the maltiness comes out quite a bit more as the beer warms up and helps to soften up the other notes (which isn’t necessarily a good thing, depending on what your preference is).

Tasty enough, though I wouldn’t mind a touch more funkiness from something like Brettanomyces, but that would certainly put this outside the modern interpretation of a Flemish sour. I definitely like the body of this brew, it has some texture to it, but it is still fairly quaffable and the zippy carbonation helps to lighten things up enough. I feel like I shouldn’t like this as much as I am as it seems to be lacking in complexity, but damn, I am enjoying this quite a bit. The flavors are so well integrated and the oak / wine notes are at such a soft, integrated level that just makes this beer work quite well. Really it is the oak / wine notes that make this beer in the end, without them this beer would really need something or it wouldn’t be nearly as tasty as it is.

A - It pours an auburn-mahogany hue, and is capped with a splotchy tan head. Looks rustic, which is par for the Oud Bruin course.

S - The nose is strongly acetic, with notes of rotten apple and peach suggested. There is a good amount of wet wood and sweet brown sugar - cinnamon in the nose once the relative pungency of the acidity wears off. The nose, again, like the look, is rustic.

T - The flavor is acetic and tannic, fairly strongly, and is accentuated by slight unripe berry accents, or perhaps something astringent like pomegranate or cranberry. The apple and peach notes of the nose are there on the finish, along with a surprising amount of vanilla.

M - The feel is dry and somewhat sharp; the feel is enhancing.

O - This is a pretty good beer; it strikes me as somewhat akin to a very acidic Rodenbach Grand Cru.

Recently had this on tap, poured into a Tulip. Excellent brew.

Pours a Dark golden red which a redish mocha head. It smells tart, with hints of leather and brettanomyces. It tastes fantastically of cherries, very tart and funky. Excellent after taste as well. In terms of mouthfeel, this brew is extremely efferverscent, and very drinkable. Overall and excellent beer.
