Style: Flanders Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Oude Tart is our take on a Flanders Style red ale. It has won back to back gold medals in that category at the World Beer Cup (2010 & 2012) as well as a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2010. This sour red ale ages in oak barrels for anywhere from 6 to 18 months before being carefully blended to taste. The resulting beer is pleasantly sour with hints of leather, dark fruit and toasty oak.

Beautiful red pour. One of my favorite sours to date as the smell and taste seem ideally tuned to my palate. Mouthfeel was slightly astringent but was the only fault I could find with this beautifully crafted beer.

Pours a dark reddish-brown. Thick cream colored head. Minimal lacing left when the head recedes.

Wonderful sour aromas. Tart cherry, sour grape, funky oak. Good amount of sour citrus. Lemon and lime mix with a bit of cranberry and raspberry.

Taste follows the smell perfectly. Big tart cherries. Oaky tannins. Tart lemon and cranberry. Mild vinegar underneath everything else. Hints of plum, red grape and vanilla.

Sourness induces a mild pucker. Medium body with a crisp mouth feel. Mild carbonation. Dry aftertaste.

This a nice well balanced sour. Complex blend of sour fruit with good barrel notes. Sourness is prominent but not extreme.

Sampled by accident. Fantastic for the style. Not for me though honestly

The beer pours a nice dark ruby red. A careful pour leaves a very clean clear beer. Tan colored collar of foam leaves nice lacing. Scent is full of tart cherries, leather and a hint of tobacco. Very nice complex acid scent as well. The taste is similarly complex with an initial cherry sweetness that quickly turns to a pleasant puckering sourness. Not as vinegary as some Belgians, but still very complex. Nice rich mouthfeel although not as well carbonated as many belgian beers.

Overall fantastic and very enjoyable.
