Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Sans Pagaie translates to “without a paddle” and is our take on the Belgian-style kriek, a sour blonde ale aged in barrels with cherries. The base beer has a subtle funk that melds gently with the fruit giving this beer flavors reminiscent of coconut, vanilla yogurt and of course, fresh cherries. A complex beer, perfect for a warm California day in the park with a slice of home made chocolate cake.

750ml bottle into tulip. 2013 vintage.

A: Pours a clean, light ruby-pink color with a thin, short-lived, off-white head that quickly fizzed away into nothingness.
S: Drying and woody oak barrel, earthy funk, tart cherry and a touch of vinegar. Smells very earthy, funky, and dry, with a nice kiss of cherry. The funk is on the cheesy side, with some barnyard as well.
T: Follows the nose with tart and light flavors of cherry skins balanced by slightly sweet cherry juice. The funk isn’t as prominent as the nose, but there is a nice earthy layer to the flavor. The finish has a touch of lemon, raspberry, and woody oak, and the aftertaste is dry, tart, and has lingering notes of cherry juice.
M: Medium body, smooth and tingly carbonation, drying and lightly tart mouthfeel. Dry but drinks very well.
O: A clean and enjoyable cherry sour. Great funk on the nose that reminds me of the Belgians, but sadly this didn’t carry over to the taste as well as the greats of the style. Solid all-around though.

Consumed: Oct. 25, 2014
Misc.: 2014 edition; Bottle says 6 percent ABV; Had about 2/3 of the bottle left when I got it

Thanks Chris!

Poured a dark pink lemonade color with light off white head that dissipated almost immediately. No lacing along the sides of the glass. No retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 3.50)

Smelled artificial cherry (on a sundae), sour cherry, black cherry, cherry ice cream, Sweet Tarts, Smarties, cherry Bubble Yum, Gobstoppers, light orange zest and very light vanilla. (Smell - 4.25)

Tasted even more cherrier than the nose. Got sour cherry, cherry Bubble Yum, Sweet Tarts, black cherry, cherry ice cream and light oaky notes. Cherry notes (lots of them obviously) are mostly sugary artificial. (Taste - 4.00)

Light body. Oily-to-thin texture. Average carbonation. Long, sour fruity finish. (Feel - 4.25)

Cherry is the only way to describe this beer. A nice sour, especially if you are into cherries. Yum, yum. (Overall - 4.00)
