Style: Wheatwine

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 13.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
ABV varies by batch.

The primary component of our "White Oak" ale is a 100% barrel aged wheat wine that we affectionately refer to as "White Oak Sap." Essentially a "summer" barley-wine style ale, but made with a wheat heavy grain base, White Oak Sap is aged in used bourbon barrels for nearly a year and comes out rich in flavors of coconut, honey, caramel and vanilla. To compliment the already rich flavors of the beer, we've added cacao nibs and vanilla beans to give this beer the delicate flavor of white chocolate...hence the name.

Had a pour at a festival. - It's nice to come across the occasional The Bruery beer that's worth drinking, but I still feel they're overpriced and overvalued across their entire lineup. Probably wouldn't pay what they're asking to try it again.

I'm a fan of the sour offerings from The Bruery, but this one was not for me. It had a stabbing alcohol flavor at the beginning and then a taste reminiscent of stomach acid. It did finish with a "white chocolate" aftertaste, but the road was too long to get there. Others may like this one, but again, it was not for me.

A bit of an odd beer- pours lighter in color than I would have thought, and it's also remarkably light in body for the huge abv and flavors here. My only real complaint is that the delicacy of the wheatwine is alittle overwhelmed by the barrel ageing, while the chocolate and vanilla notes seem in harmony. Really does taste like white chocolate, with just a hint of sourness and barrel flavors. It gets a little cloying after awhile- this is one to share with a couple of other people.

One of the best wheatwine ales ive ever had. tons of chocolate and vanilla in the smell and taste.... its a weird combo for a wheatwine but it works. wont be disappointed with this one

Poured a slightly cloudy copper tinted orange body with minimal head and lace but the lace present stays present. Overpowering aroma of chocolate and vanilla bean although you can detect some wood and booze as well. The beer itself is a little boozy and hot but not medicinal and has a pronounced white chocolate taste. Retains a woody smoothness and at times you do get other flavors such as caramel/(butterscotch?) malt and ark fruits like figs. Finishes slightly hot with a sweet edge.

One of the best wheatwines available to a fairly wide market. That said, I would argue that, as backed up by review scores for Chocolate Rain and other beers with cacao nibs and vanilla beans, the concept is better suited to a stout or porter base. White Oak definitely provides a lighter, but still complex, foundation for the additives and ageing to act upon, but it also picks up a bit of tart yogurt from the oak that lingers through the finish and contrasts with the intended effect.

Maybe I received a bad bottle but I didn't think this one was very good. Might have to revisit but I really don't see me buying this one again. I'd rather buy more Chocolate Rain or the week days from them.
