Notes / Commercial Description:
This is the third release in our 2012 Provisions Series Local Collaborations Series. We've teamed up with our great friends at TAPS Brewery out of Brea for this beer and we made one of our most complicated beers to date. An amalgamation of a barley wine with a traditional stein beer, this strong, brown ale has an extra level of caramel complexity brought on by our use of granite rocks that were heated to 900º and added to the wort along with a generous addition of date sugar for added gravity. A Stein's Throw is rich with fruity esters and toffee richness, but finishes dry after being fermented with proprietary yeast strains from both The Bruery and TAPS.

4 year old bottle. Fairly effervescent. Nice bronze color. Smell is dark fruits. Sweet. Flavor follows the same profile. Dates, raisin, fig, caramel. Zero signs of oxidation. Thin bodied. This was a great beer that aged fantastically. Probably peaking at this point. I'd drink it now if you can, or just send it my way :)

Been a while since a review was done on this one.

A - Beer pours a dark mahogany body with a one finger light tan head. The head doesn't stick around and minimal to no lacing to speak of.

S - A big helping of dark fruits like figs, dates and purple grapes. It really reminds me of opening a (pick a dark fruit base) ocean spray drink. After the dark fruits fade, there is some candied sugar and caramel.

T - Not a huge wave or progression of flavors. It's really like dark fruits (dates/figs) mixed in with a caramel and candied sugar base. The dark fruits dominate.

F - Medium bodied, low carbonation. A bit undercarbed in this area.

O - It's hard for me to find fault. The beer is unique. Dates/figs dominate, but a great base backs it all up.

A : Pours medium brown/purple color with an initial khaki colored cap. The head fades fast leaving minimal bubbles and a scarce amount of lacing

S: A healthy offering of dark fruits; figs, prunes, raisins, plums and some dates. A little booze sting is noticed, some candy sugar is present but the dominant flavors are dark fruits with a finish that is a bit sticky with some cocoa and lingering dark fruits

M: Lower carbonation on the mouthfeel, sordove sweet, somewhat sticky, medum bodied with plenty of candy sugar and dark fruits to grace the palate.Feels very similar to a undercarbed Belgian Dark Ale

O: Different, and good! I enjoyed this long time want and extra from Ehammond1

A: poured into a snifter to a deep amber with a small off white head that is quick to fade to a collar around the edge of the glass
S: smells of caramel, toffee and fruity esters. slight alcohol as well
T: tastes of caramel, toffee, some fruity flavors and a bit sugary. swallow brings a bit of alcohol, more caramel sweetness, another hint of fruitiness, and a little bitterness
M: somewhat thick and full in the mouth but not chewy. soft but firm carbonation is adequate.
O: Not bad, but not great. A bit too sweet and lacking balance and complexity. Decent flavors but it doesn't stand out.

Bottle into tulip.
Special delivery from TheSevenDuffs, he never ceases to amaze me.

A- Hazy burnt amber pour with light orange around the edges. Finger and a half egg shell head that leaves decent lacing.

S - Caramel, strawberries, candied sugar, date and figs with some sweet digestive cookies (or shortbread) There is a touch of Belgian yeast as well.

T- Definite candy sugar and dates and figs. There is an apple skin tartness hiding in there somewhere followed by fresh baked biscuits. Sweet toffee in the back end.

M- Medium body, decent carbonation, slightly sticky on the lips.

Pours reddish brown with a big fluffy off-white head leaving decent retention and lacing down the glass.

Lots of caramel aroma with some dark fruits and candi sugar.

Flavor also features a ton of caramel along with raisin and fig (and I suppose dates). A little candi sugar sweetness with a tough of dark fruit. Strongly resembles a Belgian Quad.

Medium bodied somewhat sticky. Low to medium carbonation.

Enjoyed this beer more than I thought I would. Barleywine it is not though. Strongly reminded me of a Belgian quad although a good one.

Pours a hazy dark copper color with a smallish off white head that quickly dissipates to almost nothing on top. Smells of caramel and brown sugar with lots of apricots and dates. It smells pretty sweet but the burnt sugars and the fruit seem to balance that out a bit. The flavor is quite old aleish. Lots of sweet and caramelized sugars along with a hefty does of light and dark fruits. Prunes, plums, dates, raisins, caramel, brown sugar, and a touch of alcohol meld into quite a flavorful brew. Medium to thick body with a light to moderate level of carbonation and a sweet almost syrupy mouthfeel. I like this one, I wish I had some more to see how this develops.

A - Pours a light to medium brown with a 1/2 inch tan head that slowly fades to the outside.

S - Sweet dark fruits, the date sugar I am guessing.

T - Very sweet and more date sugar, carmel malts, earthy, granite? finish.

D - Decent carbonation and a medium body.

O - Sweet and solid. A different Barle Wine, but a bit sweet.

Pours a murky to translucentbrown amber color with a short light caramel colored head. The nose is not terribly impressive. Aromas of toffee, cherry, and orange peel. The mouthfeel is quite pleasant. It is quite full, slick, and a bit oily. The flavor is not bad, overall. Toffee, brown sugar, cherry, date, and a touch of vanilla appears toward the finish. A metallic flavor emerges late, nearly contaminating the whole experience. This is a very mild barleywine to say the least.

A: poure an amber brown in color with burgundy highlights and a nice finger of fluffy head that left some good frothy lacing sticking to the glass.

S: huge caramel aroma upfront with plenty of dark fruit character such as figs, raisins and dates but also sniffed burnt sugars semi booze and a touch of brown sugar.

T: the caramel character was just as potent on the palate like the nose suggested alongside toffee, brown sugar, dates, raisins, fig fruit, but with a little sweet burnt sugar, well balanced booze and a touch of underlying cherry flavor.

M: the brew was medium in body with a good amount of carbonation which had a sweet, slightly boozy, dark fruity and sticky finish,

O. Really was digging this beer which kind of reminded me of a belgian Quad.

Poured into The Bruery tulip glass

From my beer journal:

Nose: Caramel, dates, burnt sugar, toffee, grape juice, figs, raisins, cola and slight alcohol.

Taste: Raisins, dates, caramel, figs, burnt sugar, caramel, grapes, toffee, a hint of booze and some spices.

Medium body.

I liked this a lot more than all these reviews led me to believe I would. One of my favorite Provisions series beers so far.

From 11/21/12 notes. Got 1 bottle of this in the Reserve Society this year. 750ml bottle poured into a Chimay tulip.

a - Pours a deep brown color with a reddish tint, two fingers of off white head that leaves quickly, and low to moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of dark fruits, raisins, fig, plums, cherries, bready malts. Lots of cherries which surprised me. Sweet but not too sweet; pretty nice nose.

t - Tastes of dark fruits, raisins, figs, plums, fruity malts, bready malts, toasted malts, light cherries, light alcohol, and some caramel. Less cherries than the nose and very light alcohol, which I didn't notice in the nose at all. A slight step down but still pretty good.

m - Light to medium body and very low carbonation. Beer definitely seems to be undercarbonated, and would have liked the body to be a bit thicker.

o - Overall I was surprised how much I liked this one considering I had seem some people's reviews beforehand; I seemed to like it more than most I guess. I got a lot of cherries in the nose and sweet dark fruits throughout, but didn't think it was too sweet. My only knock on the beer was the mouthfeel. It was definitely undercarbonated, and would have liked it to be a bit thicker. The bottle said it was a barleywine but I felt it was more of a Belgian style dark ale; either way it was pretty good overall.

Poured in to tulip.

A - Dark amber, almost brown in the middle. Half a finger of tan coloured head formed on the pour and immediately disappeared leaving a few scattered bubbles on the top of the beer.

S - Caramel, raisins, toffee, dates. Slightly noticeable ABV.

T - Sweet caramel and brown sugar up front - almost a burnt caramel presence. Raisins and figs show up too and add more sweetness. Some Belgian yeast is present as well as some fruity flavours. Warming alcohol throughout.

M - Medium body. Creamy. Light to medium carbonation.

750 mL bottle courtesy of my Reserve Society trustee JRSD. It was allowed to warm a little bit before being split with my cousin. My half was poured into my Bruery tulip.

A Stein's Throw pours a murky mahogany. Maybe a finger of off white foam rises up to cap the beer. It fades pretty quickly though, and doesn't leave anything in the way of lacing. The nose has a bit of dates and figs , as well as some alcohol and caramel, with the former unfortunately outweighing the latter. The flavor isn't quite as boozy. There's still some alcoholic heat to it, but it's a bit more in the background here. There's still a strong amount of fruity esters, and there's some brown sugar to supplement the caramel sweetness. The body isn't too overbearing and heavy, and when paired with the low level carbonation the mouthfeel gives the impression of a malt forward beer, while staying relatively drinkable at the same time. I'm intrigued by the process used to make A Stein's Throw, but the end result is a barleywine/strong ale that just isn't particularly memorable.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into my CBS glass. Mahogany brown in color with a thin, spotty head to it. A little lacing to it and nice color.

The aroma shows a lot of rich, sugary dark fruits to it. Notes of dates and raisins are most prominent. Some malty caramel is there as well. The date sugar definitely has a big influence in the aroma as well. Not a bad aroma, but not something that stood out in the style either.

In the taste the date sugar gives it a good amount of sweeter dark fruit flavors with notes of raisin, dates and a little cherry all coming out. The Belgian yeast comes out more in the finish. It does feel a little sugary and unbalanced at times, but it also has some really nice flavors to it as well.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied for the style and carbonation being a little below average. Overall, it was a pretty good beer but not an outstanding one of the style. The date sugar gave it some interesting and pretty good flavors but it also made it feel a little sugary and unbalanced. Enjoyable and interesting beer overall, but probably not one of the better Bruery beers I've had recently.

750ml bottle.

Pours a deep reddish amber with little light passing or through underneath a small thick beige head.

Aroma is sweet with carame malts and brown sugar but also has a mineral presence, presumably from the granite. There is a good bit of plums and other overripe dark fruits, soaked in booze.

Taste is sugary sweet up front, lots of molasses and fruity esters? Some earthy hops and caramel. The finish is definitely bitter, some coming from the hops, but also a bit of mineral aftertaste. Interesting.

Mouthfeel is excellent, medium bodied and really smooth with soft carbonation.

I've definitely had better barleywines but it's interesting and better than some of the Bruery beers I've had recently, so it's mainly positives for me. Definitely sweeter than I was expecting though.

750ml into a matching Bruery snifter. The brew appears a clouded light brown with a reddish hint when held to the light. An initial surge of 2+ fingers of tan cap forms across the top and quickly fades to a thin film atop the brew. A light swirl brings forth a supporting film across the top and paint some spots of lacing effect on the glass.

The aroma initially is quite sweet more like belgian candy sugar than anything else. Some minor citrus quality and a touch of fruit to floral quality emerges. The maltiness is like caramel/toffee with a bit of earthy mineral elements. A bit of alcohol ester emerges as the brew warms up really driving home that focus on fruity tinges.

The taste is quite sweet like belgian candy sugar. Toffee, caramel, a hint of citrus, floral elements and fruit like dates, prunes, plums. A faint inclusion of herbal hops is present that transitions into a bit of earthy and minorly musty grain. As the brew warms up, the focus on alcohol increases along with a mild touch of vanilla.

This is a medium to fuller bodied brew with a moderate to light amount of carbonation. Visually the carbonation seems a bit lacking but in the mouth, it has some prickly feel. The alcohol is fairly evident for 8.5%. Overall this is a very sweet brew that seems like it didnt attenuate all the way or perhaps the process of throwing those rocks into the wort created unfermentable sugar that just doesn't quite do it for me. It is worth a try but not something I would seek out again.

A: Very pretty plum tint when held to the light that fades to amber as you go. Barely a finger's worth of bubbly head that coats the glass without much lacing.

S: Really catch the dates here. Also figs, dark chocolate, flutter of cinnamon/nutmeg, not a strong alcohol presence.

T: Smokier than I expected! Roasted texture, almost minerally. Toasted hazelnuts, oats, and dates that follow through to the finish.

MF: Gentle carbonation. Coats the mouth nicely and doesn't leave a sugary film on the way down.

O: This was a mellow, roasty brew that surpassed my expectations. Sweeter, but not saccharine. Could have easily come across as a gimmicky beer, but it was thoroughly well-crafted.

Light fizzy head fades semi slowly, little lacing, super hazy reddish murky mahogany beer.

Nose light fruity, no actually fairly fruity, date like, apricot?, light molasses, caramelized sugar, a light chalky mineral like aromas, herbal earthy chewy date sugar sweetener, light phenols, hint esters.

Taste what the... sweet molasses and dates, caramelized fig in sugar but not very sweet, light chalky mineral and rock like with little smokey rock. Some booze and phenols, herbal, earthy, little esters, etc. More fruity fig date like, touch of slime from some old rock. Finish is more booze, date sugar, mineral and phenols, little sweet, weird.

Mouth is med to fuller bodied, decent carb, booze.

Overall blech!

A: Pours a dark brown with reddish edges under 1-inch thick off-white head which fades quickly to the rim and leaves spotty lace.

N: Some dark fruits such as dates, raisins, figs and plums, along with dark cherries and bready malts.

T: Follows nose with dark fruits and some caramel sweetness.

M: Semi-moderate body and carbonation. Finishes kinda sweetish with those dark fruits.

O: Not a barleywine or a quad, perhaps a strong ale hybrid.

A shared bottle with JLindros from our rs membership. Poured into a duvel tulip.

A - Poured into a standard Kate the Great tulip a hazy chestnut brown hue with a one finger brown head that faded to a light wisping halo.

S - Aromas of weak sweet malts light booze and gentle mineral notes. What is this...

T - Taste is do I say this, not good. Sweet sugary malts and light esters with some mineral qualities. As a geologist I cam assure that this does not taste like granite, but instead shale (possibly gneiss) and a faint green talc. Incredibly misleading.

M - Mouthfeel is not too too bad for the style and ABV. Kind of the high point of the beer.

O - Overall this beer was very underwhelming possibly due another establishment being involved. Oh well...

On tap at The Bruery in Placentia, CA.

Pours a clear orange-brown with a foamy tan head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is super malty and very sweet with a strong caramel aroma. Taste is much the same an interesting super malty and caramel covered fruit flavor. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with some interesting flavors but I couldn’t drink too much of this one.

On draft. 4 ounce pour in mini-snifter.
Appearance: Deep copper with ruby highlights. Thin layer of loose foam around the edges.
Smell: Sulfur and minerals, with a faint sweetness. Does not appear to have a lot of life in it.
Taste: Sweet, malty, with caramelization. Everything tastes like its on mute. Maybe the body has been washed out with the date sugar?
Mouthfeel: Low carbonation and the body seems to be missing.
Overall: Somebody hook this thing up to a defibrillator… I think it’s dying. I don’t hate it, but it’s kind of a letdown. There’s no energy here.

A: Pours a chestnut brown color with a thin cream colored head.

S: Lots of fruity esters. Plum, dates, grape bubblegum. Interesting.

T: Not what I'm used to in a barleywine at all. Malty beginning with some grape nuts, grapes and raisins in there along with some caramelized brown sugar.

@Bruery Provisions

App- A darker mahogany color with a nice golden center. A nice colored beer. The head was more like egg whites around the edges and only left a couple dots of cling.

Smell- I'm gonna go with this being closer to a BW than a Strong ale aroma. The lightness of the malts in turn with the sweetness of the sugars lend itself to a BW with a little caramel and toffee, was just light to me.

Taste- I enjoyed this. The method in which they brewed it with the hot rocks created that great caramel flavor mixed with the malts and the dates made for a good depth.

Mouth- A bit light on the body with a nice matching carbonation level. Needs a bit more but it was nice.

Drink- I dont think I would pay the $15 for this one again but it was nice to have. And when I think about it, I probably will buy one to age a little. Who knows.
