Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.50%

Notes / Commercial Description:
5 Golden Rings is the 5th verse in our ‘12 Days of Christmas’ winter seasonal ale series. The only golden ale in the bunch, we spiced up the natural pause in the classic song with cinnamon, allspice and ginger along with the delicious sweet and tangy flavor of pineapple. The resulting ale is a true holiday treat that can be enjoyed fresh or cellared until 2019, when 12 Drummers Drumming will be released.

Poured into a tulip glass. A clear gold color with a thin line of bubbles.

Strong alcohol, grassy hop, and sweet, syrupy candy sugar.

More of the same in the flavor. A strong alcohol presence up front with a sweet fruity tang that fades into the finish with a lingering tang and bitterness and sweet alcohol burn. A touch of clove in there also.

Very tart and sweet which dries out the mouth. low carbonation. A lingering burn. Syrupy.

I can see where some people might like this beer, but it wasn't my taste. For me it was a little too sweet, tart, and not enough carbonation.

A - Golden, slightly hazy, 2" of light bubbly head that dissipates quickly

S - Carmel, biscuit, flowery

T - Initial: sweet pineapple, cinnamon, nutmeg and wow- plenty of spice. Finish: pumpkin and plenty of spice. Hop level is very low (1/10), 11.2 ABVs are non existent

M - creamy but not frothy, zero lacing, viscosity is low, thinner then hoped.

O - I will say this is a tough beer to accurately gauge from reading reviews. The beer solely depends on personal preference and what level of spice you like in your winter warmer (not Belgian strong pale ale). I personally find this beer a bit spicier than I would want but looking at the rating its receiving, it is FAR better that that. Flavors and spice pop and for 11.2 ABV- it is hidden extraordinarily. It believe it could use some aging or bitter hops to balance things out.

Pours a hazy deep gold/pale amber producing a single finger frothy, off-white, shortlived head that fades to small islands & surface ring of foam that leaves no lacing. Aroma is sweet pale malts, Belgian yeast esters of pear & apple mixed with cinnamon, clove & ginger spices combining to produce the smell of mulled apple cider in a background of light alcohol. Taste is similar but the sugar & mulled apple cider components are more robust with pale malt note being heavy to pie crust & pineapple & white grape fruitiness thrown into the mix. Alcohol, sweetness & spices intensify in the peppery finish which produces a sweet, fruity but slightly drying aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium-heavy bodied with moderate carbonation, is syrupy, thick, chewy & a little prickly. This is truly a Christmas brew but is too heavily spiced for my taste. Similar to what I think very sweet mulled apple cider with a tiny dollop of vodka added would taste like.

Holiday beer for me this year, good brew with notes of pineapple. The carbonation is crisp and the flavors are blended well. I enjoyed this beer in terms of one and done. My thoughts on this are the Bruery makes quality beer and anything from them is worth a try. I enjoyed the beer for sure but would pass it up for a second bottle only because its not the type of beer you would drink on a regular basis. Pours a nice head and has a good aroma.

Bottom Line: never had it? gotta try it because its a quality beer.
