Our take on the traditional Belgian-style blend of aged lambics, Rueuze, is becoming something of a tradition around here. Our Bruers tasted and hand-selected only the best barrels for this release, which they blend to taste. Wild notes of hay, barnyard funk, and Olive round out a well-balanced acidity

Look - Nice slihgtly hazy copper color with a foamy thick white heat and sticy
Smell and taste - tart earthy grainy woody with a nice bite

The beer is golden, amber color. The foam is fine and thin, bubbling vividly. It smells woody, apple cider vinegar, toast rice, tart plum, tart apricot noses. The beer is sharp tart, quite savoy (like a Gose), and very light sweet. It’s medium body, relatively oily for a sour. The beer feels influence by Gose style and lightly funky. It has a sea water like funk, sea weeds, sea breathe, abalone, in the meanwhile it’s very earthy like moss, mushy tree bark, hay, molded wood, Brie mold. Beside those aroma, the tartness recalls tart fruit, like Hawthorne fruit, tart apricot, apple cider vinegar. I don’t know how much the aging changed the beer, but it still have full strength of a sour bone ale, sharp, earthy and funky. The Bruery made quality beer, no exception here. I wish it’s a bit more dry.

May 2012, ready for drinking by now. Very tart, thinner mouthfeel for the median geuze. Promising nose, satisfying finish not as dry as expected. Lots of complexity there or came about from ageing.

Last week, I went to the liquor store from where I originally started buying craft beer over 20 years ago. The name of the place has changed, but they still have a broad selection of old, out of code bottles. This is where I found several bottles of the 2015 version of this beer. Hoping for the best, I bought one... Two days ago, my bro and I popped open this bottle and, at 16.99 for something this old, it was pretty damn solid. I would offer that it doesn't have quite the nuance and punch as some of my favorite Belgian versions. Kind of echoing other observations here, it tastes a bit like a funky blonde ale or perhaps a blend of blonde and wild ale. Effervescent as hell, we decanted the bottle into two fat tulip glasses and sipped it with bbq and watermelon/feta salad. Went superb with it. Punchy, snappy, light, dry; perking up the palate between bites, maintaining its brightness and attack. Convinced I need to grab another bottle soon, spend a little more time getting to know it (1932)

Rueuze
Bruery Terreux Brewing

I figured it was time to change directions and try an American Gueuze. I used a tulip glass; the temperature was 44 degrees. A foamy and airy white head with average retention was created. Sadly, the beautiful head left no lacing on the glass. The color charts around SRM 6, golden yellow with straw hues. The beer is clear, with a few carbonation bubbles floating towards the top.
When I pried the top off, this lovely funky lambic aroma permeated my nose. The aromas are similar to champagne; it is dry, a toasted cracker with subtle fruit. Nosing further, I detect cider, lemons, fruity tartness, and a touch of barnyard funk.
The flavors are apple cider, earthiness, a skosh of barnyard, toasted crackers, fruity sweetness, wood, and citrus.
The mouthfeel is bright, acidic, and dry. The body is light, with loads of carbonation and a quick finish.
This beer is excellent and can hold up to any foreign lambic. The only thing is the beer is very acidic and dry. I think sitting on this one for several years will produce something quite spectacular. Overall, I enjoyed the lambic, just too bold for me.

I’m pretty darn sure this label says 090512LOT04.4 which is hard to believe. Regardless, it’s stood up really well to the test of time. Incredible level of sour funk and acidic tartness. This is a proper “American Gueuze” and an incredible base beer for all of their other amazing creations. Bravo!

2015 vintage, at the five year mark.
Pours clear, light yellow, with minimal foaming. I get a little straw, along with a light touch of hay and lemon yogurt on the nose. Sour/tart sip punches, hard, although there’s treats to be had on the back end. Bracingly dry finish.

S - Mild apple fruitiness over a moderately acidic base.
T - Follows the nose, acidity in the front which remains present throughout, with middle introducing mild spice and subtle apple highlights that become more pronounced in the finish.
M - Moderate weight, carbonation, with just a hint of puckering sourness in the finish.
O - I love this with a few years on it. Delicious, smooth, pleasant drinker.
