Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Ichigo Highway is a collaborative beer that we created with Hangar 24 Brewing from Redlands, CA. The base style is a sessionable sour red ale that we aged in oak barrels along with a whopping amount of strawberries, most of which were picked from the fields besides Hangar 24's brewery. Aged for approximately 8 months, this beer has developed a pleasant funk and a delightful acidity that is balanced by the intensely sweet aroma and flavor of the strawberries as well as a unique dryness achieved by using a sake yeast along with our house strain along with souring bacteria.

what an interesting brew, sour red type loaded with strawberries and fermented, at least in part, with sake yeast. hazy looking pour with as much dirty blonde to it as red honestly, and an inch or so of lightly tinted pink froth. the nose on this is bizarre. as sour as it is, its also rather sweet from the strawberries, not sure all the sugar has fermented out. the flavor is immediately sour, just like the nose, but the finish is indeed sweeter, jammy strawberries, fresh and summery, a unique complex. the strawberry is potent and lasting, almost overdone, extremely forward. i know this has spent quite a bit of time in oak, but further treatment may mellow it out a little bit, still a very intensely flavored beer with all kinds of acidity mixed with the sugar. im not sure what the sake yeast adds in terms of flavor, but this does have a bit fuller body than i thought it would for what it is. not the cleanest finish in the world, but pretty quick for how intense the flavors are. one of the stranger bruery releases ive had the pleasure of trying, but a very enjoyable sour, probably a bottle to share.

Appearance: Not the prettiest sight, with a very cloudy russet color; the modest head fades quickly and leaves only a few dots behind

Smell: Strawberry jam and acetic vinegar tones

Taste: Strawberry tones lay down an initial hint of sweetness but the acetic vinegar tones quickly arrive and dominate the middle through the finish; after the swallow, oak and lemon elements add a bit of complexity; the finish is very dry

Mouthfeel: Medium body with low to moderate carbonation; a bit clunky

Overall: It's not often one encounters a tart strawberry beer and for the uniqueness this beer had merit; not the best sour I have encountered but certainly worthy

Thanks, JesseLara, for the opportunity

Draft at KnB Wine Cellar in San Diego, CA. March, 2013.

Pours a very hazy, dark golden amber color with tangerine edges and a half finger off-white head that quickly settles into a very thin ring.  Minimal spotty lacing left behind. Heavy yeast sediment floating around.

Funky, vinous aroma with light fruit, prominent phenols/bandaid along with a strong jammy strawberry presence.  Slightly creamy with dry oak, musty brett, strawberry and cream but the phenols are really odd.  Still smells pretty good though.

Tart, sour and funky with a strong tart berry flavor and again, an unpleasant phenol character that is very potent in the finish.  Slightly creamy with dry, toasted oak and musty bugs followed by bandaid and acidic tartness.  Harsh solvent nail polish/acetone in finish which really hurts the  drinkability of this beer a lot.

Bottle shared at tasting. Reviewed from notes.

Muddy bronze with a modest beige head that retreats quickly to a resilient collar.

Burnt milk crates, PVC piping and tart, sherbety strawberry. Too much of the former and not enough of the latter.

The plastic contingent is much reduced but by no means absent. Tart strawberry, dry grape skins and pleasant musty funk.

Simultaneously light but thick with tannins. Buzzy acidity. Very satisfying.

Would undoubtedly be lovely without the domineering sharp burnt plastic notes.

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: Pours an opaque or nearly opaque dark orange/red color and a small (less than 1 finger) yellow-tinted head appears and then fades away quickly. Looks similar to a slightly darker apple cider.

Smell: Tart cherries, light funk, green apple, and plenty of strawberry! Very delicious aroma.

Taste: Lots of oak, sour green apple, lemon, plenty of strawberries in the second half. Quite puckeringly sour, but the sour fades a bit toward the finish.

Mouth-feel: Medium carbonation and a medium body. Dry, sour finish to it.

Overall: I was really impressed with this one - I wasn't sure what to think going in. The strawberries come through really well and combine with the oak and sour to make a really nice conflux of flavors.

CBC Clerkenwell bottleshare

A: Cloudy light-ish brown color. Decent creamy head.
S: Oh lawd... what is going on??? Band-aids and cinnamon are the first thing that pop into my head. Rotten strawberries followed by berries, bubblegum.
T: Again with the berries and strawberry bubblegum. Thankfully no cinnamon or rotten qualities. Strong sourness and a weird funkiness. Decent but not much better than the smell.
M: Medium bodied, medium carbonation and a dry, tart finish.
O: Avoid! First time I have been disappointed by the Bruery but this was the unanimous worst of the night.
