Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Ichigo Highway is a collaborative beer that we created with Hangar 24 Brewing from Redlands, CA. The base style is a sessionable sour red ale that we aged in oak barrels along with a whopping amount of strawberries, most of which were picked from the fields besides Hangar 24's brewery. Aged for approximately 8 months, this beer has developed a pleasant funk and a delightful acidity that is balanced by the intensely sweet aroma and flavor of the strawberries as well as a unique dryness achieved by using a sake yeast along with our house strain along with souring bacteria.

Bottle shared at tasting. Reviewed from notes.

Muddy bronze with a modest beige head that retreats quickly to a resilient collar.

Burnt milk crates, PVC piping and tart, sherbety strawberry. Too much of the former and not enough of the latter.

The plastic contingent is much reduced but by no means absent. Tart strawberry, dry grape skins and pleasant musty funk.

Simultaneously light but thick with tannins. Buzzy acidity. Very satisfying.

Would undoubtedly be lovely without the domineering sharp burnt plastic notes.

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: Pours an opaque or nearly opaque dark orange/red color and a small (less than 1 finger) yellow-tinted head appears and then fades away quickly. Looks similar to a slightly darker apple cider.

Smell: Tart cherries, light funk, green apple, and plenty of strawberry! Very delicious aroma.

Taste: Lots of oak, sour green apple, lemon, plenty of strawberries in the second half. Quite puckeringly sour, but the sour fades a bit toward the finish.

Mouth-feel: Medium carbonation and a medium body. Dry, sour finish to it.

Overall: I was really impressed with this one - I wasn't sure what to think going in. The strawberries come through really well and combine with the oak and sour to make a really nice conflux of flavors.

CBC Clerkenwell bottleshare

A: Cloudy light-ish brown color. Decent creamy head.
S: Oh lawd... what is going on??? Band-aids and cinnamon are the first thing that pop into my head. Rotten strawberries followed by berries, bubblegum.
T: Again with the berries and strawberry bubblegum. Thankfully no cinnamon or rotten qualities. Strong sourness and a weird funkiness. Decent but not much better than the smell.
M: Medium bodied, medium carbonation and a dry, tart finish.
O: Avoid! First time I have been disappointed by the Bruery but this was the unanimous worst of the night.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a teku.

Pours a dark pink with a 1 finger light pink head. No lacing

Strawberry dominates the aroma, faint red wine and oak with some vinegar.

Dark fruits and red wine, vinegar, oak, strawberries are almost non existent in the taste.

7/10 sourness. Really liked the strawberry aroma but wish it came through more in the taste, but still a nice sour.

A: Ichigo Highway pours vibrantly into my glass with a fizzy head that doesn't stick around for that long. Bubbles race furiously to the top of the beer forever. The liquid the bubbles race through is red brown in color, deep and muddied. 3

S: The aroma is crisp, but with some strawberries. It tries to be focused on the fruits, but it sort of falls short. It's inviting, but doesn't stand out. 3.5

T: The taste starts off tart and crisp, but without much taste. Then, BOOM, all the strawberries come out. They're fresh and balance out the taste really well. The beer won't knock your socks off, or rip the enamel off of your teeth, but it will quench your thirst. 4

MF: The beer is a bit overcarbonated, but I don't mind it because the beer tastes good. The balance works, and the finish is dry, which makes the mouth water for more. 3.5

O: This was a great beer from two breweries that make some decent sours. I know it has been a while, but I really hope The Bruery and Hangar 24 link back up for sour collaborations in the future! 4

750ml bottle into a snifter

A: Pours an amber/brown with a finger if quickly receding head.

S: Acetic acid, funk, and strawberries are upfront, all of fairly equal intensity. The sour aroma I get out of this isn't exactly my favorite, but it's a decent aroma.

T: Strongly sour, much moreso than I was expecting. Actually fairly balanced between acetic and lactic. A nice strawberry aftertaste, but that's about all it is. An odd funkiness is there as well.

M: Moderate thickness with low carbonation.

O: More subtle and balanced than most Bruery beers I've had. The strawberry could be a bit more intense. There's also an odd funkiness to this beer.
