Style: Fruit / Vegetable Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.50%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Evan Kleiman, host of KCRW's Good Food, was inspired to collaborate with Patrick Rue and The Bruery after enjoying a homemade Rhubarb Raspberry Pie. The rhubarb's fruity sourness tempered with the sweetness of the fresh raspberries and the wheat crust, begged to be bottled up in the form of a bubbly beer. Keeping the original pie recipe in mind, specialty grains were chosen to mimic the crust, and rhubarb and raspberries were used in varying stages of the brewing and fermentation process. The resulting beer is reminiscent of a fresh country pie, cooling on a farmhouse windowsill.

On-tap at Beachwood I,

A: Pours a vibrant fuschia to dark magenta with a medium rocky white head, some solid head retention.

S: Pie like with some crust notes and raspberries.

T: Delicious, sweet raspberry and rhubarb come through; it really does taste like liquid pie which is impressive. Very well done.

M: Medium to full-bodied with a moderate acidity. Certainly does not feel like a beer over 10%.

O: One of the better new brews from these guys in a while, glad it showed up at Sour Fest, well worth a purchase.

Beachwood Sourfest Beer.

A - Pours dark pink with a mostly white head.

S - Raspberries dominate with some malt to give it a "crust".

T - Much like the aroma. Strong raspberries with some extra tartness, and malt backbone as crust.

M - Good carbonation.

O - Pretty mixed on this one. Maxed my allocation but I'd much rather just have a real sour or a NG Fruit beer without the unnecessary ABV.

Interesting beer. It had a lot of potential, but both on the nose and the palate there was a hint of soap that kept this from being a lot better. Like the balance between the rhubarb and raspberries, and the underlying ale, while simple, was a nice canvas. A fun beer, but not a great beer.
