Dark brown, a lot of floatings things. Scarce foam. Beige in color.
Malty smell, dried fruit, dried figs, dates. Some oxidation.
Not a lot in the taste. Soma malt, sugary. Again dates and dried figs.
A bit too light body. A bit too strong alcohol.
The aftertaste is on alcoholic and sugary notes, with a bit of ending bitterness.

Bottle provided so generously by mar02x about a week ago. Thanks for the gift man!
From a bottle into a snifter
Described as a dark triple
ABV: 10%
APPEARANCE: Pours a 1+ finger, medium looking, fluffy, light tan head with great retention. Opaque bistre brown body with medium levels of carbonation for the style. Head fades to a thick foam cap and clings to the top of the glass. A full cap remains until the end and leaves lots of lacing down the glass. Really good looking beer.
SMELL: Lots of dark fruit and spices on the nose. Raisins, dates, plumbs, as well as coriander and lots of spicy yeast. Caramel malts and bready notes as well. Really bold and enticing.
TASTE: Caramel and dark fruits with raisins, dates and dark grapes. Spicy yeast at the swallow with pepper, coriander and a burst of spicy alcohol. Bold and lingering finish of spicy yeast, alcohol and a touch of hop bitterness. Flavorful and enjoyable, but not quite as impressive as the aroma.
PALATE: Lighter body with slightly higher levels of carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down smooth with a bit of a scratch at the swallow and finishes somewhat mouth coating. Some heat lingers at the back of the throat. Good, and thickens up as it sits.
OVERALL: This was excellent. A solid strong dark ale that has all the right ingredients in spades. Lots of sweet malt flavors, fruity notes and plenty of spicy yeast and alcohol make this a very enjoyable brew. One I'm glad to have tried and would like to drink again at some point. Thanks again for the surprise mar02x! Much appreciated.

Alpaïde 33cl bottle from www.belgianbeerstation.com
This is 10% ABV as mentioned on the label, not 9%.
This ale has got a very beautiful and warm red brown color. The liquid is very clear and has a nice carbonation. The head is thick, beige, bubbly and stable.
The aroma is sweet with roasted malts as the first thing that comes up. Chocolate touch.
The mouthfeel is quite syrupy. First taste is sweetness but it is quickly overtaken by roasted malts and bitterness. Liquorice ! The finish is very long, excellent. Alcohol is clearly presentl.
This is a complex and wonderful beer with a very warming character. Brewery Nieuwhuys from Hoegaarden is maybe small but this beer is top class !

Bought this beer at one of my favorite bottle shops (Pelgrim's, just outside of Aarschot). The owner suggested it and said it's his favorite new brewery in the country.
Anyway, on to the review ... the owner is right. This is a great, complex beer. It poured a dark brown with a thick, creamy head.I got brown sugar, dark fruits and a bit of toasted malt in the smell.
There's a strong chocolate flavor that is pretty intense, with a bit of yeastiness at the finish. The creamy mouthfeel is very nice.
I love this beer. I've had it numerous times but finally decided to review it tonight (since it was the last of the batch I had). Perhaps the best thing about it — it has returned the brewing tradition to the town of Hoegaarden after AB InBev stopped brewing Hoegaarden there. A town with that rich of a brewing heritage deserves a good brewery.

My Belgian friends Roland and Jean-Pierre turned me on to this beer and I've been back twice to replenish. Dark ruby-brown pour with nice creamy caramel colored head and great lacing. Really great chocolatey nose with just a hint of coffee, alcohol and sweetness. Tons of chocolate in the taste as well with a bit of roasted coffee to round it out. The alcohol is fairly well hidden, but is definitely present to warm the senses. The chocolate is intense from start to finish like no other beer I've tasted. Even with the high alcohol this is very drinkable. This is an incredible beer from a small, relatively unknown brewery. Hopefully more people can experience this hidden gem.

Dark brown with reddish (Bordeaux) notes. Creamy pale brown head that dwindles to a beige film on the beer.
Caramel, coffee, malt, some orange zest in the nose.
Faintly sweet and bitter, alcohol bite that is hardly masked. Bitter finish where the warmth of the alcohol rolls back on. Creamy feel, good carbonation, tingly.
All in all nice, maybe not thrilling, but nice.
