Brasseur De Montreal "L' ecossaise Black Watch"
on tap at the brewery on 6 Octobre 2014

Notes: Clear deep copper/russet brown in color with orange highlights beneath a short head of creamy tan. Head retention and lacing are average. Smoky, almost bacon-like aroma. The flavor delivers caramel - sweet golden caramel and then some almost-burnt sugar as well - and more smoke. Subtle grassy hops, and an underlying roastiness. Moderately bitter but balanced. Medium-light in body with a moderate carbonation that lends a light caress before becoming smoother. Nicely done.

On tap at the brewpub. Licorice in the aroma, brown coloured body with a lace sheet down the glass. Off- flavours, buttery. Mouthfeel is compromised by overcarbonation. Sourish and tart edges instead of any smoke or peat. Limited drinkability. Not good representation of this style, normally well made in the province.

Bottle from a mix pack I bought just outside of Mont Tremblant.

A - Pours dark copper/amber with strong carbonation and a full finger, thick beige head. Bright. Quite good retention with a full finger and some slight lacing.

S - Whiskey, wood, some grass, and dark malts.

T - Quite smokey, wood, rich dark malts. Fairly woody.

M - Not bad carbonation, good body for the abv.Scotch finish.

O/D - An OK Scotch Ale. Good dose of wood there but needs more rich maltiness. Not worth seeking it out but an alright find.

From a sampler pack brought back from Montreal.

Poured into a nonic glass. Dark, hazy chestnut, a slight amber hue when held to the light. Leaves a generous inch of cream-coloured head that displays good retention. Lots of lacing.

Nose is caramel, slightly burnt brown sugar, a little bit of coffee and smoke.

A tasty scottish ale, nothing too exciting, but the flavors are quite pleasant. Very rich caramel taste, malty, with notes of fried brown sugar, a bit of grain, cold coffee. Finishes slightly smoky. Very sweet, but its to my personal tastes.

Mouthfeel is thin, creamy, with very mild carbonation. Feels like an English nitro-poured ale, like Boddingtons or Tetley's does on draught.

Sweet to the point where I don't think more than a bottle will be necessary, but if you like malty brews that are rich in caramel flavor, as scottish ales tend to be, this one would fit the bill nicely. The smoky character was on the right track, but this brew needed some more counterbalance to really set itself apart.

Good sized head that settles to a heavy film and leaves good lace. Clear deep brown colour. Looks good.

Smell is of sweet burnt sugar and malt, some grain. Smells like a decent enough brew. Taste is burnt sugar and molasses, roasted grain. Just a tad too sweet to be drinking a lot of. Moderate mouthfeel, slightly sticky finish. Lingering coffee flavour.

Well made, but a bit too sweet in profile to be doing more than one or two at a turn.

A dark brown beer, with glints of amber. A bit of head appears at the start, and vanishes quickly.

It has a nice smell... kind of like toast, molasses, maybe dates, and a bit of choc/coffee.

Taste is good. Fairly "full", but still pretty bright. You can pick out all of the things mentioned in smell above.

Mouthfeel is good all-round. On the full side of a medium body, and middling carbonation.

Def. drinkable... more than I thought it would be!

A: Brown with some red. Clear. Thin and almost not present.
S: Burnt caramel malts which could be associated with molasses.
T: Wow, the taste is intense. The burnt caramel stays in the mouth. I like this one. The caramel is strong initially then at the end of the sip, it changes to molasses (or burnt notes).
M: Thin.
D: Very good.

This brewery is a good discovery for me. I was avoiding their beers since it was more on the light side than the heavy. However, they make very good, good smell and tasty, light beer.

Try it if you have the chance!

Cheers all!

Pours a very dark brown with a finger or so of thick, sticky white head. A small amount of lacing left on the glass.

No real distinguishable scent. There is something that reminds me of sugar, as well as their Ghosttown.

Definite coffee flavoring in there, though it is reminds me of an older pot left to grow cold. A hint of smoke. Some sweetness in the end. Coffee flavor lingers in the mouth for a bit.

Not sure when I would drink this. By itself it is drinkable, but after a glass I want to move to something else. Oddly, I see this as being a compliment to something like ice cream.

Overall an ok beverage, but nothing makes me want to have more.

A not too bad Scotch Ale

Appearance: Clear deep cola brown with hints of amber, nice foamy brown head, some lace on the glass.

Smell: Coffee, roasted malt, hints of chocolate, molasses.

Taste: heavy roasted malt, coffee, touch of molasses, pleasantly bitter/ashy finish.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, light carbonation.

Drinkability: pretty good. Not really a session beer, but very drinkable.
