The bottle looks really nice but it's definitely hard to open without a wine bottle opener.

As for the beer, nice amber/copper see-through color with a beautiful 1 inch off white head.

Doesn't have a really present smell but it might be just me, I still smell some dark fruit, alcohol and some red wine aromas.

Nice taste though, roasted malts, dark fruits red wine flavors are perceivable as well as a touch of smokiness.

It's supposed to be 90 IBU but I don't find it that bitter. Overall definitely not bad but I expected more from this beer, nice warm feeling when you swallow.

Bottle from a del in Gatineau. From notes.

A - Amber sorta colour with a bright body and two fingers of brown head. Spotty lace and a film of retention.

S - Dark fruit, rotten fruit, burnt malt, licorice.

T - Not tasty. Burnt, vinous, rotten.

M - Good carbonation, full body, dry finish that pretty much goes immediately.

O/D - Not the best. Not sure what's up with this guy, but this was a big mess that showed no Nelson Sauvin character and showed more burnt and rotten fruit notes than anything.

Appearance: It has a nice copper/amber color to it. It has a nice thick creamy light beige head that dies down moderately and leaves some nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of grassy/earthy hops, some pine, a slight smokiness, toasty malts, dark fruit, sweet caramel and some toffee.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a grassy bitterness, some pine resins, sweet toasty malts, dark fruit, caramel, toffee and a slight smokiness towards the end.

Mouthfeel: It has a low carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied by good flavors and aromas.

Service: Bottle
Vintage: 2014

Pours a crystal clear ruddy copper with a healthy one inch of soft beige head that settles to a decent film. Good retention; lots of majestic, varied lacing. (4)

Warm malty cereals. Molasses, oats, pepper, rum. (4)

Boozy malt nectar. Strong, spicy warming malt flavor layers with caramel, pepper and a woody whiskey character. A touch oxidized, but not bad as a result. (4)

This feeling with a full body and a tingling, warming, finish with a healthy dose of booziness. (3.75)

Good beer all around.
It was a tiny bit oxidized and I felt like it was really 'whiskey-ey' from what I remembered having it once before.
It pours very nice for such a strong beer and is all very rich, warm, and a touch sticky. It is big to drink alone and was pretty woody and alcoholic tasting the further I got through it.
Definitely worth a shot. Especially if you are a big fan of Barleywines. (3.75)

Appearance: The color is a nice golden orange with head that dissipates fairly quickly and leaves substantial lacing.

Smell: At first, hoppy bitterness followed by melon-y funk and spices (cloves? nutmeg?) and something reminiscent of smoky hickory wood.

Taste: The hop character is much mellower then anticipated by the smell, but sticks to your palate for a long duration. Malty sweetness comes to balance the hops and round out the flavor with hints of fruitiness, dark berries and banana.

Mouthfeel: it has a low carbonation and leaves a film-like texture in your mouth.

Drinkability: Perfect for the cold of winter, siting by a warm fireplace. Drinkable indeed!

1 year old bottle : Lightly veiled copper color with almost no activity. Creamy and frothy beige/orange 3-4 finger island head, lasting around 10-15 minutes, with good lacing and a nice swirl construct. Flavors of dark roasted grains, ginger, nutmeg, dark berries, plums, molasses, cheese, oak, lemon, caramel, herbal spices. Highly sweet, deeply malty and fruity, while heavily bitter. Soft creamy and slick medium body with prickly and crispy carbonation. Strong finish, thick sugary roasted malts and fruity esters, leafy hops, soft barrel aged feel, with lots of red ale spices. A little overly spicy and coarse, not very accessible. Lacks the true deep fruity feel of a barley wine, more like a cross with an red ale gingerbread feel. Yet it's still quite tasty and nicely aged, with respectful freshness for the ABV. The flavors are balanced and well executed. Overall very good quality craft.
