Vibrant dark-orange-amber color with two thick fingers of tan-tinted head that start out dense but quickly become foamy as they dissipate, leaving behind thick lacing.

Piney, resiny, stanky aroma with a solid malt backbone behind. This smell definitely lives up to the "fresh hop" label and what I expect from a Pacific Northwest IPA.

Up front in the pretty-light taste there's a flash of almost maple-like malt sweetness, which combines with the fairly strong hop bitterness to give a very quick tobacco-and-coffee impression, followed by a little spiciness mid-palate, and then some relatively-strong bitterness on the backend. That bitterness is definitely the most defining characteristic drinking this one.

The mouthfeel is lighter than the color and aroma led me to believe it would be, again, with a little prickliness and with decent carbonation. Pretty solid offering, but I do wish it were just a tad more robust -- because what malt was in there did peak my interest. Wouldn't hesitate to pick it up whenever I saw it.

12oz can purchased at Total Wine on Spokane's north side. There appears to have been an attempt at stamping a date on the bottom of the can, but the result is merely a smudged red dot, There's a TW stockroom sticker with a date of September. 13, 2016, but I'm not convinced that's an accurate date for determining this beer's age.

Poured into a Mad Bomber IPA glass, this is a hazy dark amber color and appears choked with sediment! There was initially a good sized off-white head, but it dropped rather quickly. Lots of sticky lace webbing was left behind.

Grapefruity and piney nose. I think I can detect a faint mineral-like aroma as well.

Fairly low amount of hop flavor for an IPA, fresh or otherwise. Fairly strong, bready malt backbone.

Medium bodied, with a slightly lower than good level of carbonation.

I wish there was something else to go on in determining this beer's actual age. While it's drinkable, the extent to which there's a lack of flavor makes me wonder, partly in jest, partly not, if this could somehow be a can from last year. This continues a trend of underwhelming beers from this brewery.

Can from ABV.

A hazy orange with a dense, white head that falls off to a disk rapidly leaving little lacing, this looks great. The nose is quite juicy, moderately fruity, a touch vegetal, a little earthy and piney. Strangely lacking is the soft complexity that the better fresh hop beers have, this beer also has a touch of caramel and a moderate doughy aroma present. The palate opens mildly bitter with some wet hop favor characteristics present. Grassy and with a mildly distracting doughy malt flavor preset on the mid-palate, the hop character here is rather minimal. Muddled, earthy, mildly pine like, moderately citrusy and lacking in focus and definition, this beer is mildly sweet on the finish, mildly wort like with moderate carbonation. Medium-light in body, this beer is mildly disappointing.

12 oz can poured into 16 oz glass

A — A hazy amber hue with a light off-white head leaves behind nice bits of lacing.

S — Smell is strong and pungent, earthy, herbal, piney, dirty. Very earthy, no real floral or citrus notes.

T — Much like the nose, big bitter notes of herbs and earth, some pine and grass.

M — Medium bodied with a warming finish and light carbonation.

O — Good overall, a nice start to the Fresh Hop Season but I am not sure how many more times I'll reach for this one in particular.

Poured hazy dark copper with a dense thick head. Though, some chunky sediment detracts from the overall appearance. Bright floral vine notes on the nose with biscuit bread. The taste has some tasty peach and apricot fruit and mandarin orange juice that transitions into some acidic grass chlorophyll. A dry earthy dirt finishes long. A little too dry for my taste, but still tasty.
