What I bought: Cigar City Humidor Series IPA, Invasion Pale Ale , and Hopped On The High Seas - Kohatu, Baird Kurofune Porter, Goose Island The Illinois IIPA, Bear Republic Big Bear Black Stout, Intuition Ale Works People’s Pale Ale, Coronado & Cigar City Jurata Baltic Porter, and Bold City Mad Manatee IPA.
What I liked: Redonkulous, well-organized selection from a wide range of countries, fair prices, beer guy was very helpful in making recommendations, lots of free parking out back, enjoyed some cream sodas on the patio. What I disliked: Checkout staff weren’t too friendly and a few of the offerings were way past due, but overall this is a great beer store.
Would I go back? For sure. Grassroots is a destination in Jacksonville.

This has become my go-to spot for quality brewers and special bottles. They seem to get all the Funky Buddha releases as well as many other southern breweries. Small but well stocked, it’s a great display of quality over quantity.

Excellent selection; it really says something about the place when I walk into a beer store or beer aisle and haven't heard of more than 20+ beers on the shelf. On top of that, they just recently started doing a free beer tasting every Friday..

@ryanhooks81 I hear you, from what I understand though they are going to be removing some of the shelves for additional fridge space. Which I think is a great move considering the way competition is around them; Beer:30, Cask, Alewife soon, and tons of bars with cold bottle selection, all featuring something like 3-7 Coolers for cold enjoyable ready to drink beer. It just reassures me that they are on their game. So, while you are definitely right, the shelves up against the window are quite barren, I'm looking forward to seeing what goes in the fridge and what replaces the newly moved beer on the shelf!

Very good health/natural store with an impressive selection of beers. Very nice collection of imports, as well as domestic craft.

The last time I visited, they had every major brewery available, as well as a large collection of sour beers from Belgium, the USA, and other places. Unfortunately, some beers that are available in the west are not available in the east, and the same applies to the north and the south. But still, lots of choices and top quality. Very good quality beers.

Nov 4 visit: its down to about 3 rows now to mostly bombers and singles. prices are near the same as TW. Belgian bomber selection is damn good. They got allot buery stuff also. Still this just a health food store. no BMC and still its about 1/3 of TW has. Not service really unless you ask. with only 3 rows I mean who are we kidding here. why is there a vibe for a store? quality I guess they beer is not spoiled????

Aug 2013 visit: mostly a bomber store now. still a decent selection for riverside and small space.
the folks that setup the beer side are all gone sadly and it shows.
Ok I think I was a tad harsh, readjustment of my numbers.

9/5/2010 visit: Wow its a must visit in town now, if your can afford it, I could not but spent 40 bucks anyway, LOL
Better selection of the rare high end stuff, better than TW by a large margin. HIGHLY recommend, plus its near kickbacks and BCB, riverside is the BEER MECCA for j-ville now!

I have to thank the beerjunto web site for the nice info on some super rares (well rare for JAX), trust me the selection now is near greens, If they can get the shelf space they may equal it one day, and boy would that be a hoot, and would really transform this town beer wise!!!

6/10/09: getting better and better

Finally got over here to see if they had any beer. Quite surprised to find they did have a whole row of beer. Its an organic store so they have allot of Organic beer, but the also had a nice Bell's selection of 5 different six packs. The carry Brooklyn, dog fish head, and about 15 other micro's. The had actually more Belgians than TW, but that's really not saying anything anymore because our TW is in sucks like a dog ville. they don't carry 1 BMC, so they gets bonus points from me. Nice place to pick up some rare organic food stuff also.

We been by a few times since we go to the hospital near there, and the selection is decent but prices are a tad higher than I like, and higher than others by quite a bit on some beers.

9/5/10 edit:
(still true prices on cigar city was 10.99 for GG, versus TW 9.99)

As I looked around this little market in Riverside, I must say I was spell bound by the compact volume of different ales and beers that made up the front left portion of the store. I noted that it was not striving to have every beer possible represented on the shelves, but it was a masterful display of styles with single bottle facings. I was very pleased that I had stopped here to pick up a mixed six pack because that was the idea of the selection and how it was presented: try as much as you can and then pick your favorites.

I admired the selection so much that I kept returning to it, though my basket was full already. I found it remarkable to find beers that I had either not seen before or knew that the brewer distributed other parts of their line up here. For instance, I found Westmalle Dubbel in 750ml and I also found Aecht Schlenkerla Doppel Bock too.

The prices struck me as all over map and I was comfortable with that as some of my favorites from NY were present here, such as Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout and Blue Point's Rasta Rye. I also found Mead, Sake, Cider, and other nuances that I will have to return to later.

Looking back, the exceptional quality of Grassroots Market's vibrant beer selection reminded me of what the masters of display work can achieve, though the actual volume compared to the giants in Eastern Jacksonville (TW, WF) was smaller. I am looking forward to coming back to fill my basket with more beers and maybe some coffee beans too.

I randomly stopped into this health food store as I was passing through Jax. I am very glad I did. I came into the store and started looking around for their beer selection. One of the employees saw my wandering gaze and came over to see if I needed help with anything. I told him I was looking for craft beer. He promptly took me to that aisle and then stayed to answer questions. I probably asked him about 30 different beers. He told me his impression of each beer that he had tasted (most) and even went so far as to read me his ratebeer review of one of the beers. This guys (Danny) scope and depth of beer knowledge was extremely impressive. Once he figured out what I was interested in, he pointed out several selections and gave a brief description of each. I have since had the chance to drink several of the beers and his mini review was spot on for each beer. You could tell he was very passionate about craft beer. If you are in Jax and want craft beer, you MUST go to this store. Hopefully Danny will be there and available to help you. I will absolutely go to this store for my craft beer purchases everytime I am even close to Jax.

Great place with a good selection of mix and match beers. Grassroots carries a much better variety than most places in Jacksonville. They have a good selection of many imports and other beers that can be difficult to find. The staff has always been very friendly and knowledgeable of their products. They have a passion for their beer and are more than willing to recommend some good brews. Prices were quite reasonable and similar to others who carried the same beers. Definitely worth stopping in if your in Jax.

Great atmosphere.. Family owned and operated.. Everyone there is helpful and once they have seen you in there a few times, they are very personable. Not as big of beer selection as some other stores, but The quality of the selection outweighs quantities.. end over end. I have only bought food a few times but everything is reasonably priced for organics and such.. Premium products often require premium prices for quality, freshness and availibility. The smoothies are awesome.. Check out the peanut butter and jelly smoothie and grab some dinner and some excellent brews.

Grassroots is a family owned and operated natural food grocery store in the 5 points area of Jacksonville. The interior is well planned and inviting. The staff is solid and the owners seem interested in making sure you are pleased and find what you are looking for. They have an excellent beer selection including 750ml bottles, six packs and many singles. They make excellent recommendations and for a natural food grocery, I can't say there is another with the selection that is offered. I frequent this location and therefore am familiar with there prices and can say that they are rarely if ever beaten and I have purchased beer elsewhere only to find their prices $2-3 less. I am always sure to look at Grassroots before I buy elsewhere.

This place had a bit of a hippy vibe to it. It is a whole foods store focusing on organic groceries. There is one long aisle filled with assorted craft and domestic brews and the back wall at the end of the aisle is full too. Lots of bombers and a selection of mix your own six. Lots of Rouge, Terrapin, Cigar City, Hoppin Frog, and Stone selections. I picked up Hoppin Frog's Boris the Crusher and Doris the Destroyer. I also picked up a Terrapin Side Project. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The guy that helped me was very knowledgable and frank. He could get just about anything you wanted if they didn't have it as long as the brewery shipped it out that way.

Quality: Surprised by alot awesome craft beer that were on th shelf. But this is going to into selection category.

Service: Staff is accomidating and friendly. helpful as well.

Selection: fantastic amount of local beers from florida, georgia and all around the south region. Nice belgians beers, I am not into the belgians that much but better than average I would say for belgians. Craft beer fro all over the USA. Nice selections of a mix a 6 pack.

Value: Decent prices about the same as everywhere else i have looked. no crazy bargains, but I will say standard prices.

Overall: Best craft beer store in jacksonville. I will stop again before leaving town.

The guy who runs the beer section is as friendly as can be, and there is no shortage of helpful hands willing to make sure you are hop happy. Good place to grab a mix of six for a party or gift of good beer for those who don't know beer. Good mix of rarities time to time, certain cigar city hiding in plain sight will catch you by surprise. Damn worth the stop in. Beats feeding the corporate beasts that burden the rest of jax.

On Ding's advice, I visited Grassroots for the very first time today and met one of the owners of the store, James. It was morning and the staff was busy adding fresh inventory to the shelves and in the produce section with a delivery from Albertson's fresh organics.

Grassroots has a really decent selection of mix-and-match beers in mixed sizes as well as a smaller selection of six packs, cases and cold beverages. I want to say they have about six or seven 8'x8' displays of single bottle mix-and match alone. Pretty impressive for an organic health food store.

The dry bottles selection is pretty great for our area. They're definitely worth the visit. While browsing through and picking and choosing some new-to-me beers, James took the time to stop stocking shelves, introduce himself, and help me find a few rarities i'd been searching the area for. Their website announces new arrivals for the week with updates on Fridays (just in time for the weekend, woohoo).

While discussing the availability of Sierra Navada Bigfoot, James explained to me that they purchase their stock from five local distributors and are usually able to procure special requests when they're available. James also confessed to me that they're usually after the more unique and novel beers and will usually pick up a new beer just to try it (if they like it, others will follow).

Grassroots is also unafraid to find a BA review for you if you're on the fence about trying out a particular beer.

All in all, a very good store and i'm quite sure i'll be a regular visitor.

What a great little beer gem hidden away in Riverside, which is quickly becoming the heart for good beer in Jacksonville. I have been hearing about this place for several months, and decided I must check it out during my search for Cigar City beers. As soon as you walk in the door, turn left and BAM - there are the beers. Two aisles including end caps dedicated to craft and micro beers. You won't find any Bud Light in this place!!! I did find the CCB beer I was looking for, plus a great selection of just about everything the distributors are bringing to Jax. The fact that it's in Riverside only helps it's cause. Check this place out on your way to Kickbacks or Bold City. You don't be disappointed.

This place is a small yet quality health food & speciality beer shop. Full line of quality vitamins, produce, cheeses, wheatgrass and juice bar. Cool place with very friendly staff, knowledgable yet casual and apporachable. Best wheatgrass juice I have enjoyed to date.

Now on to the beer...
Excellent selection of some very rare stuff for our Jacksonville market. The brothers who own this store (Jack & James) are passionate about their beer choices and variety. Rare stuff for our market (Gose, Guezes, unique Saisons) all in big & small sized individual bottles. Recently landed a Cigar City 110k batch 3, Leipziger Gose, and Peche Mortel which are all pretty tough to find in my area. One of the top 3 beer stores in the Jacksonville area for sure. Possibly one of the best given the knowledgable staff and model customer service.

On my first visit I called and the shop owner (James) answered. He informed me they were closed and had been for about an hour. I informed I learned of his shop through BA and was looking for a Peche Mortel. I could hear his smile through the phone and he welcomed my wife and I to come anyway, knock on the door and he would allow us to shop. This was an exciting surprise as we live about an hour away. He won over another loyal customer and beer geek, and I hope to spread the word so others can support this fine shop and the beers they offer.

Keep up the great work Grassroots! I tip my Sorachi Ace glass in your direction and hope to send you plenty of ongoing business.

This is my home beer shop. Grassroots has a whole aisle plus a fridge full of beer. Lots of one-offs and seasonals from Terrapin, Victory and other market breweries. Great selection of import craft with a nice focus on Saisons and Sours. Price can vary between cheap and steep. 4 packs of wake and bake are 10.99 (awesome value) while some Cigar Cities beers are almost 3 dollars more than the competition. I would still rather buy from these guys, even if I am paying more, because they really try to make a beer geek happy and give EXCELLENT service. You always get asked if you need help and they will always point out whats new. Grab some cheese while you are there and do pairings. Vegetarian sandwiches are the best in town which is a BIG plus for me. These guys really want to succeed and do everything they can to make a fulfilling and exciting experience.

Great Selection for your local natural foods market! An entire aisle has been dedicated to nothing but micro-brews and imports. They claim to have over 300 beers and I certainly wouldn't doubt it. Both the owners and a portion of the staff seem very knowledgeable and more than eager to talk beer with you.

I visited the store on 2/20/10 and was very surprised/excited to see that they had literally just added an entire wall of singles. The prices seem to be competitive with Total Wine from what I can tell. The overall experience was enjoyable and I know that I will be going back frequently.

Review edited 6/13/10.

Have been to Grassroots many times since my initial review, so I am re-reviewing because this place deserves it.

Everytime I go in, I am greeted and asked if they can help me find anything. The selection seems to improve every week, and it is quality stuff. I went to Grassroots one day and TW the next and I think the selection at Grassroots may not quite be up to TW in terms of volume, but in terms of quality, Grassroots is giving them a run for their money. As far as price (I know this for a fact, because I checked), Grassroots is CHEAPER than TW on many things. For example, Southern Tier Mokah was $6.99 at Grassroots and $8.49 at TW. What can I say other than they have done an outstanding job improving the whole beer department from selection to price.

Grassroots has done a great job and is a real credit to the Jax Craft Beer community.

Do yourself a favor and stop by.

Edit: 6/22/10

Selection here continues to improve and they now offer everything as singles so that you can make your own six pack (which is a serious improvement). Broudys at the beach has really gone downhill in the last couple of months, and I would now consider Grassroots neck and neck with Total Wine for best selection in Jacksonville. Since I deeply dislike TW, this is now my go to beer store despite the fact that I only find myself on their side of town a couple of times a week. If you haven't been to Grassroots, or haven't been there in the last six months, do yourself a favor and check them out. They can't compare to the selection of stores in some other parts of the country, but they are exceptional for a store in Jacksonville.

Original Review:

There is a good selection here, especially for a neighborhood grocery store. They have devoted almost an entire aisle to beer, and have a good sampling of what is available in Jacksonville. They haven't wasted any of their limited space with BMC or other lackluster beers, so that is a plus. The selection, especially the Belgians, has improved significantly in the last couple of months and they now carry a few beers that (as far as I know) neither Broudys or TW have.

The beer seems to be well maintained, and they have a small selection of the more popular singles and six-packs in a cooler if you are in a hurry to crack one open. I have noticed that the shelves are always well stocked and fronted, which implies to me that they are at least giving a good faith effort to treat the beer right and check dates (which is a hell of a lot more than I can say for Total Wine).

The service is hit or miss; one of the owners and one or two of the employees are fairly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about craft beer, but the rest of the staff is much better versed in wheat grass. This might be a problem for some customers, but I really can't see why it would matter to most people who frequent this site; I, for one, don't generally rely on liquor store clerks to help me pick out my beer.

This is probably the third best selection in Jacksonville, and they do have a few rarities that even Broudys and TW don't carry. If you are on this side of town, Grassroots is definitely your best bet.

Its mainly an organic grocery store, but I just wanted some beer like I could find a green's sadly this is not even close. Nice folks though, and 1 even knew what beer was. But seriously they were freindly and took the time to chat.lol

rescoring. This place has improved alot. Just got some Cigar City, Theobroma, and other hard to find beers. Definitly a good destination.

I stopped by and they have a decent selection. Not much better than a Publix. They had all the great craft brews like Dogfish, Sam Adams, and Brooklyn. The prices were normal.

quality - good, lost of organic and health food selections

service- nothing horrbile about it, the store it small so everythign is easy to find

selection- adequate, nothing to jump up and down about, but they seem to get new releases quickly

value- average prices that most stores have most in Jacksonvilel are the same.

at one time this store had promise, but the stock is deteriorating and, unfortunately, so is the service. despite having bought mixed sixes and singles multiple times with no problems (they even had prices for individual bottles programmed into the computer), recently i was told they "have never allowed splitting up six-packs" and the people at the counter were even rude about it, essentially calling me a liar! if a store is going to treat you that way, it doesn't deserve to stay in business.
