Daddy Fat Sacks IPADaddy Fat Sacks IPA
Notes: Pale Orange in color with aromas of tropical fruit, stone fruit, grapefruit, and citrus. Four specialty malts in subtle additions leave the ale with a slightly toasted caramel flavor. Five different hop additions impart just enough bitterness without the astringent and bitter aftertaste. A mix of American flavor hops round out the floral and citrus esters. Large sacks of dank hops are then added to the conditioning vessel and aged several days to impart all the wonderful citrus and floral aromas deep into the beer.

On tap at Norlands pub in Chambersburg.

The beer pours a copper amber with fairly good head retention and decent lacing. The nose is attractive, but not what I typically expect in an IPA. I get some sweet malt aroma, with something of a cherry and baked apple characteristic. Maybe there's some underlying dry citrus as well, but it's pretty faint. The flavor profile is also a bit odd for an IPA, though the it's attractive. The beer is moderately sweet and malty, with a light smoke and subtle bitterness in the finish as well. This beer really smells and drinks more like a maibock that just happens to be a bit on the hoppy/bitter side. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, and drinkability is pretty good. Although not listed on the tap list, I sort of figured the abv. wasn't all that super high. In any event, drinkability was pretty good in this beer, and I thought that overall, this was a fairly nice beer. However, if I ordered this expecting to get a IPA (or at least what I think of as an IPA), I probably wouldn't be very happy.

For some reason the bartender at Norlands thought this was a DIPA, but regardless, IPA or DIPA, it's pretty atypical, but still a decent beer for all that.

Purchased from some weird convenience store/food place called Sheetz in Shippensburg, PA while on my cross country road trip from Tucson, AZ. Poured into a nonic pint glass:

A- dark amber in color, quite hazy with a thick white head that slowly settles into a thin lacing. cool bottle art, featuring a strange looking drug dealer/scumbag-type falling asleep with a pint in his hand. Old school 90s cordless phone and digital clock style font is a nice touch too. Extra points for that

S- sweet malted barley aroma with fruity/citrus hops and yeasty esters. smells nice and complex but not the typical hop attack you get from modern American IPAs, seems more like a English IPA

T- Lots of fruity hops with light herbal/pine bitterness. Malted barley balances everything, adding a subtle sweetness that makes the fruity hops shine wonderfully. Not your typical hop bomb, subtle and nice.

M- smooth, slightly chewy.

O- I am quite happy with this beer. There are enough bitter, clean, citrus hop bombs on the market right now. Not sure why this beer is getting slammed so heavily. This is like an old school IPA with new hops and a classic malt base. Kind of a hybrid of a newer American IPA and a classic English IPA. well done.

$2.50 single from Abe's.

Hazy amber body, topped by four fingers of flat, not bright or glossy, white foam. Drippy lacing.

Strong aroma of lemon, orange, and pine. Somewhat cleanserish.

A quick flash of sweet is quickly burIed beneath a mouthful of industrial cleanser. Very astringent, and not in a way I like. Some fruit does bubble up through the detergent. Unfortunately long lingering aftertaste.

Not a pleasant experience.

Appears a dark, copper toned amber with a 2 finger off white head of fluff that slowly fades out. Scattered streaks of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of caramel, floral notes, perfumy, earthy, with a touch of freshly picked herbs. Some notes toasted nuts, and doughy bread start finding their way through the hops.
Taste is of the aromas with a fruity notes dried grapes, figs, rye bread, and grapefruit.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, chewy, evenly carbonated, and a tad bitter with a wood-like quality in the finish.

I was in PHL on Sa, 23 June 2018 for the 1-year Anniversary Party of their satellite location there (Roy Pitz Barrel House 990 Spring Garden St). They brought people on a bus from Chambersburg (!) & we did a walking tour of both Love City & the newest Yards before returning to their place. Part of the celebration was the unveiling of their CANs & I got two of each of the three (3) with one set for The CANQuest (tm) & the other for my local, in-person trader, tone77, due to visit this coming Sunday, 08 July 2018.

From the CAN: "Liquid Art"; "Passionately Brewed & CANned in Chambersburg, PA".

My third of the three (3) - 8=( I was anxious for the Crack! since, as a self-described, self-avowed hophead, AIPAs are my favorite style of beer. I CANtinued with a quick, ungentle, but not inverted Glug, and sat back to watch it form just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, bone-white head with decent retention. The rising heat & humidity of the day was just too much for it, though, and it faded to wisps. Color was Straw-Yellow (SRM = > 2, < 4) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was interesting, a tad malty for the style, with an almost vegetal quality from the hops, like limes and cilantro (?) or some sort of herbal essence that I could not quite identify. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was more malty than bitter with a noticeable caramel malt presence and the hops, while lending a bitterness, were less bitter than the style calls for. I realize that such was by design, but I kept thinking that it was closer to an English IPA than an AIPA. Hey, if it sells, and clearly it does, since they have made it one of their first CAN releases, I am not going to quibble, but it left me unfulfilled. Finish was dry and while it was bitter, I did not feel that it came up to the level of bitterness that is the hallmark of the style. YMMV.

A: A nice deep chestnut amber. Head was minimal, but Good-Ta_Go doesn't pour a good beer. Some lacing at the top.

S: Definitely of butter toast with a light hopness filling in the rest, but mild and hard to get a bead on the aroma. I let it set for a little bit and sip, light caramel notes and a sweetness like candy corn comes out. Earthy, herbal hops come out at the end along with some yeasty dough notes.

T: Slightly sweet malts and that candy corn note is there, also buttery and bready. Hops are sharp, but lack a good defining quality and get a little lost in the malts. Some alcohol esters filter through it all and resides all over the tongue, but not strongly. Hops finish grassy. Grapefruit, pith and some chalky aspirin. Fruity notes, but like a hard red candy of no particular flavor.

O: Medium to full-bodied and finishes sharp and bitey. If you are looking for an English style IPA that is hopped up a bit and has plenty of alcohol, this is the one.

a: first off - love the label art, twelve ounce bottle into an avery snifter, the pour brings out a light but full coating of off-white head, receding to a smattering on the surface, the beer itself a dark honey amber in color

s: lots of sweet, rich caramel malt and fruity hops on the nose, notes of baked apples, sweet potato, sweet citrus pulp, more fresh caramel, pineapple, and fresh hop resin

m: medium, malty body with a light-medium, delicate carbonation

t: mostly follows suit with the aroma...a tasty, sweet caramel malt body blends with hop juices and flavors of apple, pineapple, and sweet citrus, a resin bitterness begins shortly after the swallow and slowly builds to around moderate strength in the finish

o: as stated on the website the brewer’s intent was to create a balanced, malt fueled ipa without an overwhelmingly bitter aftertaste, and while an atypical ipa, I think it works and would certainly go for another, could have gone higher elsewhere but I'll tack those points on here

Growler from Brass Rail Deli.

Cloudy copper/brown in the glass. OK head but no lace. Smell of caramel malt, maybe some faint citrus. Taste matches the smell, really more of a malty brew than a hoppy IPA. Not sure why they have the Imperial in the name except for maybe the high ABV but if they were shooting for a DIPA they missed the boat. Not a bad beer but i think it's incorrectly named. Dosen't have any bold citrus characteristics to make it an American IPA and dosen't have the earthier tones that you would expect in a English IPA. ABV is well hidden and there is some bitterness in the finish. We'll finish the growler but not what I was expecting.

Daddy Fat Sacks IPA

Tastes more like a Double IPA than a true American IPA. Has more of a malty taste than I was expecting. Nice Hazy Orange, with some light citrus notes. Lacks the true Hoppy Pop I look for in an American IPA. Still an above average brew and a nice 7.5ABV for the price.

On-tap at the Grey Lodge Pub. OK, so this is supposed to be an IPA with a bitter aftertaste according to the brewing. I get the idea of hop bursts and big flavor without big bitterness, but this is a rather malty beer. The bartender had a better description of it as a double-ESB. There's a rich caramel, toffee, cherry bread taste with some citrus and herbal hops. But really this tastes and smells like an English strong ale, just shy of being a barleywine.

A- This beer pours a cloudy, deep amber color that almost looks brown when not held up to a light. It has a one finger head that sticks around for a while and leaves decent lacing.

S- Sweet fruit, floral hops, some malt, and some pungent citrus comes through in the end.

T- Begins with a nice fruitiness mixed with a hint of malts. I'm getting a very spicy/peppery hop flavor as well. The finish is long a bitter.

M- Medium with a nice amount of carbonation.

D/O- A very balanced IPA that has great drinkability. To tell you truth I think the balance of the beer may throw some reviewers a curve ball. No single aspect of this brew is going to beat you over the head, but each and every characteristic works it's magic nicely. Keep up the good work Roy Pitz. Cheers!

Roy Pitz Daddy Fat Sacks
A-Deep copper with a thin cream colored head that reduced a bit and left decent lace.

S-Slight twang of fruity hops and a caramel malt sweetness. Aroma is very balanced and noticeable but is not overwhelming.

T-Spicy citrus and quite zesty. Sweet caramel malt balance hits very quickly. A very well balanced IPA. A bit of dry earthy woodiness in the finish.

M-Medium body with a mild long lasting bitterness.

D-I found this to be a very pleasant and extremely well balanced IPA. Easy drinking and tasty citrus spiced brew. Well done. Certainly nothing that will blow you away but a solid beer that exercises balance to a T.

On the pop of the cap this brew overflowed with a foamy discharge. Once settled, I poured the remainder into a narrow pint glass: color is copper to light amber, thick looking with lots of floating sediment; head is off white to light tan; head is at least 1/2 inch deep.

Aroma is fairly malty, mainly pale with some light toasted caramel; hops are lightly resiny, earthy, 'dank'.

Flavor is similar to the aroma: malty, toasted, some caramel; then dank earthy hops, muddled somewhat; i read a description from a review from the bartender at Grey Lodge that pinpointed it as a double ESB, which sounds about right.

Mouthfeel is crisp, bitter but not overdone, stronger bitterness on the edges of the tongue.

Overall, a hoppy beer with moderate pale/caramel/toast maltiness, a little overfermented in the bottle with a gusher presentation, but not any off flavors.

Poured from a 12 Oz bottle into a shaker pint

A: Nice orange/amber. Clear and has a nice white head that lasts and leaves a lot of lacing

S: Some hops but very malty and has caramel aromas

T: Very malt forward but the hops come in after and make their presence known

M: Medium bodied with no carbonation sting.

O: I would drink this again. It is a good example of an American IPA made in the east and influenced by the English heritage.

There is a massive amount of sediment in this beer.

Overall, it's kind of a was of flavor. Thick malts with spiced tones on there and a bit of a burn from who knows what. Thicker feel. Eh. This beer is just, "there." Nothing overly interesting or noteworthy.

Poured via growler on 12/26/08, courtesy of Deuane.

A - Poured a deep amber/copper-colored body with ruby hues and one-finger creamy off-white head that receded to a patchy film and left a bit of spotty lace.

S - Fruity nose with hints of sweet and sour dark fruit as well as some citrus hops paired with caramel and toffee malt sweetness. In stark contrast to the fruity aroma, a more earthy character emerged as the liquid warmed, suggesting subtle lavender and woody notes.

T - Initial flavor incorporates burnt caramel malt with hints of dark fruit (especially raisins) and earthy, woody hops with just a touch of citrus juiciness.

M - Medium to full-bodied with a syrupy texture, perhaps slightly watery, but also with quite a bit of carbonation. Finish is moderately bitter, resulting in a warm mouthfeel overall.

D - Not a bad IPA. Didn't really strike me as a DIPA, though. A little muddy in the hop department and pretty malt-forward for an IPA, but otherwise this was a decent first effort.

drank on 3.19.09 while watching day 1 of march madness.

good looking beer. pours a cloudy brownish amber color with nice tan head (with a red tint in the head). dissipated quickly. not a whole lot of aroma, a mostly malty base, a little bit of spice, maybe some brown sugar in there as well. not much hops at all, slight.

first impression when i tatsed it is that is reminded me of a homebrewed tasting beer. not bad, but noticably average. very malty, some caramel taste and earthy tones. also a bit yeasty. there are hops on the finish acting more bittering than anything else. not sure where the 'imperial' comes from in the name. was expecting some sort of true imperial ipa or double ipa by the name, but not even close (but still tasted ok). mouthfeel is crisp and a bit carbonated.
not a bad beer overall.

Appearance: A murky brown, rather little lacing. May have been a issue with the CO2 as the beer seemed rather flat.

Smell: Limited nose, but what I did get was great. Pine / grapefruit and slight spice - although faint.

Taste: Malty with little hop flavor, seems rather run of the mill. Slight sweetneess which wasn't what I was expecting

Mouthfeel: Watery and rather flat

Drinkability: It's ok nothing great, I'll drink it but I probably won't enjoy it. Just didn't seem to have anything to get excited about in it
