Big store with a large selection of wine, liquor, beer, and even a gourmet deli. For beer, they have a wide selection of craft offerings and a good amount of cooler space, as well as a bunch of 12 packs in the back. Service has been fine the one time I asked for help. Not sure about the turnover on some of their stock, so probably worth it to check dates. Prices aren't bad, for example BCBS was going for $14 while Sierra Nevada 12 packs are $15.

I go here when I'm looking for 12 packs since Martignettis closed. Generally a good store with a lot of selection, but with the focus on wine, it caters a bit less to beer geeks.

Great selection of beer, wine, and spirits. Deli foods as well. There were plenty of people willing to help us, but they didn't seem to know much about craft beer. One of the employees told me that a particular DIPA was extremely fresh because it had just arrived at the store last week - label said it was bottled 4 months ago.

Honestly, go, but do it self-guided.

First off, the vibe is that of a typical liquor/wine store. But they do have a killer selection of craft beer. The service is the weak point here. The only time I've asked for service was simply asking their "beer geek" for some suggestions as I was having a hard time making up my mind on some choices. He helped me... grudgingly. Incredibly snobbish.

Gotta love anywhere with good selection that sells singles though.

I have now been a customer at Marty's, first in Brighton, then in Newton for over 25 years. We used to get kegs from the Harvard Ave. store in college, but that store -- like those days -- is long gone. Marty (the owner) decided to reorganize and refocus on a single store about a decade back. Earlier, he added a cigar unit to the Newton store and it's still doing business, although I have never seen anyone at the cigar counter (have heard people ordering specific brands at the register, though). Marty himself has all the looks of a jovial beer drinker. And he will be happy to chat with customers about wine, beer, food, cigars or last night's weather. Still, the store has been primarily a wine seller for years. With renovations and expansion completed last month, this has become even more of an emphasis. Renovations replaced the ancient bottle return facility and a tiny deli/cheese counter with a fully functional food alcove. The store has always had a good selection of gourmet ingredients and the convenience of wine shopping has made it the near-suburban foodie mecca of the aughts. But, until now, the store had the 90s look, complete with stainless steel modular shelving. No more! Renovations put new bookcase-style black shelving throughout the store. Ironically, the store now looks smaller, even though the floor space has expanded by almost 30%. Saturday is a the wine- and beer-tasting day, although the hours are short (Marty is all about legal compliance). With the shelving rearrangement, it seems that beer corner was the big loser. Stacks of beer cases are gone -- you have to ask the staff for a case -- but that's just as well. A refocus from imports to craft has likely benefited most consumers and the selection is extensive and diverse, but still completely disorganized. But the craft beer section -- even though it dominates the beer corner -- is uncomfortably small. No one can match Julio's for stack space, but Marty's barely can compete with a no-name liquor store in perpetually gentrified Cambridge Central Square. An even bigger disappointment is that prices are higher than that same Central Square store. This month is Marty's "Big Sale" on beer, which means that they have eight highlighted breweries (including Uintas, Anderson Valley, Avery and Dogfish) discounted to $10.99 on 6-packs (and only on 6-packs!). A bonus point is that they had both cans and bottles of some brews, but the selection was still pitiful. Avery had 4 varieties (although 3 of them came in cans and bottles, so, technically, it's 7). Dogfish had 5. Others were lucky to show 3. Marty's penchant is for bundling, so you get a big break on buying 2 packs for "only" $20. Non-sale retail for the same 6-packs at Central Square ranges from $9.49 to $11.49, although I did not see Avery in that store. Wines and liquor are priced much better and the sale deals on liquor are outstanding. Marty is always willing to put out discontinued cases on specials that are priced under 50% of original retail, and the discontinued stuff is invariably good (quite often it's discontinued because the price/quality ratio is high for an uncommon brand). But beer? I'd look elsewhere unless, by chance, this store happens to have that unusual bottle that no one else stocks. I'm still a loyal customer at Marty's but the beer experience is disappointing. Bonus: On the last three trips the beer staff was nowhere to find, so asking questions was pointless. Meanwhile, at the other end of the store, other staff were waxing poetic about wines, rums and cheeses. Like I said, beer does not seem to be a high priority.

PS: I must question the timeliness of the reviews and scores from more than two years ago, when the shift began from imports to craft. And the store really did not start emphasizing craft beer until late last year. With apologies to Marty, he'd do well to spin off the beer business into a separate outfit.
PPS: Update 7/26/13 (original 6/9/13) The selection appears to have improved, as they rearranged some things so more space is devoted to beer. But the beer section is a mess, no logical organization. And it looks like they have more than they actually do just because of the way the section is arranged. A lot of high-end pricey selections, but actually not a lot of rare stuff. I've seen more from mall stores in the last week.

for my money Marty's in Newton is in the conversation of best beer selection in the Boston area. it's not quite Julio's caliber but it's in that ballpark. all the usual suspects, brewery-wise, are well-represented, along with some off-the-radar stuff you wouldn't see in your run-of-the-mill places. great range of local breweries and a very respectable collection of Belgians. have chatted with employees on several occasions; they have always been helpful and happy to chat about beer - what they have, what's coming down the pike (no pun intended), and so on. the mix-a-six option is always welcome, as many liquor stores prohibit it.

the store also has what looks to be a pretty extensive selection of wine, as well as an impressive assortment of bourbon, scotch, and other spirits. and oh by the way there's a pretty decent deli on one side of the store adjacent to the liquor. while I almost always go for the beer, it's nice to have options.

biggest knock, and it's been pretty well-documented, are the price points. noticeably higher than other beers stores in the Boston area, including other high-rent districts. now this is offset in part by the deal they offer (forget the specifics but something along the lines of 10% or 15% off when you buy 6 or more bottles). but still. craft beer is expensive enough, we don't need those prices inflated even more.

so all in all, while not for bargain shoppers it's definitely worth a stop. just don't do it on a week where you're penny pinching.

Decided to try them out when I was in the area for work.

Good sized section on the right side of the store for the beer. There are country-specific sections but it's pretty random after that it seems, you have to wander around the whole place to make sure you didn't miss something. It's very messy too. Lots of empty spaces on the shelves, bottles kinda strewn about. Open boxes of random bottles literally just lying on the floor in various areas (watch your step!). Just gives a general impression of disorganization and lack of care.

Service was friendly, I was approached somewhat quickly. I overheard the gentlemen helping some other people with good advice.

Selection was pretty solid, on par with the better stores in the Boston area (Bermans, Redstones, Julios, etc).

Prices, however, were ridiculous. It was a minimum of 10% more than your typical prices at any other place. WWS/120min were $12 or 13 instead of the typical $9 or 10. IST for $20 or 21. FW15 for $22 or 23. The cheaper bottles were actually more of a ripoff, easily $2-3 more for a bottle that only costs $5-6 in the first place. Needless to say I didn't buy anything.

So, unless you're looking for something really specific or you live down the street, I'd avoid it. You can find the same selection at a dozen other stores but they charge a LOT less.

What a great store with an awesome selection of beer. I literally wandered around for thirty minutes unable to decided what I wanted. I felt like I was six years again in Toy's R Us right after my birthday.
Their selection is crazy from Mikkeller to a variety of Geuzes/Lambics, to Stouts to IPAs. Last time I bought a bottle of BooGop a bottle I have not been able to find anywhere else in MA including Julios. (Side note their great selection is do to the fact that the owner of Marty's is also the owner of Atlantic Distribution) If Marty's doesn't have it you can't get it in Massachusetts. Along with their great beer selection they have an amazing beer glass selection. This is something I have not seen anywhere else and I love it.
My only complaint about Marty's is that they are a bit pricey when compared to Julios or RedStone Liquors.

Marty's is one of best beer stores in the Boston area. I spent about 20 minutes with a salesperson picking out different beers. They have an excellent selection of craft beers- from Belgians to American micros. I have emailed them in the past and received a prompt reply.

There is a 15% discount for 6 separate bottles. Few retailers offer separate bottle purchases from a 4 or 6 pack. Although more expensive for a single bottle from a pack, the price goes down with more purchased bottles.

The salesperson I spoke with knows beer and I was able to purchase a number of beers I hadn't considered.

There is also a store in Brighton.

Been here a few times and have been impressed each time. Tons of wine and a nice gourmet food section when you walk in with the beer all the way to the other side of the store.

Selection and variety is great, there is usually something there that I was not expecting to pick up. Typically I make am mix 6 pack and then-some. Good selection of imports and plenty of American beers as well. Price is average for the area, with some beers being a bit more expensive than I would like, but on the flip side, those beers are the harder ones to find. Can also find some good deals when they are trying to get rid of excess stock.

A store I will certainly return to.

Easily the most overpriced store I know of in the greater boston area. Expect to pay $1 + than almost anywhere else for bombers and standard 6 packs.

$9 for Maine Brewing Lunch... $5 for Berkshire Brewing bombers (typically $3.50-$4)... Stone More Brown than Black $4.99 12oz.

Best part about Marty's is they do have excellent selection and do to the high costs the harder to find beers tend to sit on the shelf longer than your better beer stores. CBC in Belmont, Redstone Liquors, Julio's, are fantastic but always move through the latest and great so fast - cheers to them!

Been to Marty's quite a few times. They have a huge selection of beers here, as well as wines and some food. You can usually find some good stuff in there. The price is generally quite a bit higher than other stores. I would say the highest prices I have seen in the boston area. The more limited beers usually never make it onto shelves and you apparently have to have an in to get them. I've tried on more than one occasion to inquire about some more rare stuff before it's been released and am usually met with "it's already been spoken for". Kind of puts me off to this place. If what your looking for isn't limited the staff is pretty helpful, they pointed out some styles of beer I was looking for and turned me on to some new stuff.

Marty's liquors is an awesome place. Though it's a bit pricey, that's fairly normal for the area (Newton). Their sales team is great, always helping me find some harder-to-find stuff, and on numerous occasions I've gotten some bottles of limited releases, even retired beers. They're also a local distributor for DFH, so they get a lot of their rarer/harder to find beers like 120 minute (when it doesn't fly out of there in 5 minutes), World Wide Stout, Raison d'Extra, etc. Also, if you get tired of the beer (impossible, but anyways), they have an awesome wine section, lots of gourmet meats/chocolates/etc., and a small but decent mead selection (lots of B. Nektar). Once again, their beer team is really knowledgeable and they're always willing to help you find stuff. Having a specific beer department definitely helps them with their customer service.

This place blew my mind the first time I walked in. First you stroll past some gourmet foods and a deli. Turn the corner and there is A LOT of wine. Where's all the beer?? Oh there's a ton of that too, just have to walk to the far end of the store to get it.

Very impressive selection. I could spend waaayy too much time checking out all the beers Marty's has to offer. They are pricey though! I would never buy anything here that I could easily find at my regular store (Martignetti Liquors in Brighton) because I'm probably paying $1-2 more. It's a shame because it takes a little fun out of such an awesome selection.

Service is good, I was asked if I had questions within 60 seconds of walking into the beer section. The only thing is, they ask me again and again every time I see them. Hello! I"m the same guy who's been walking around here for 20 minutes, I'm all set! Clearly know what they're talking about though which is nice to know.

Long story short, amazing store that either needs to be a little cheaper for me to enjoy, or else I just need to start making more money because i could really blow a lot of it here.

Some selections were'nt on the shelves but had to be asked for. Nothing too rare, which was a surprise (Goose Island Matilda). Do watch dates on the bottles as some are quite old.

Prices at Marty's were a little rich for me. I stuck to a few bottles that my local store didn't have but after comparing my friends $200 haul to what I could get them for, they seemed about 20-30% overpriced.

The service was great and the two people i spoke to were very knowledgable and helpful. The person in the beer department walked around the store talking beer and helping me select what i wanted to buy.

The prices were high compared to all the other stores i go to but the service and selection will definately have me returning here when possible.

Also i liked how any pack could be broken up and bought with the 15% off any 6 or more loose bottles.

They had some tough to find brews and also had most of the staples that i expect going into a store of this size and caliber.

I've gotten all of the Stone collaboration beers, Oskar blues, Bear republic, and the flying dog 8-pack of 7oz bottles among others. Some of my friends have picked up Ithica Brute and Utopias as well.

Basically the selection is amazing, I'm just from ~4hrs north in VT but this is the best place to go within a days drive. The only problem with this is you're going to spend more than you expect. A lot of that is just high taxes in Mass, but their service is great, they'll always help you find stuff and if you're looking for something in specific ask and they might have it in the cellar for you!

You can get lost in the selection of beers here and it's tough to even narrow down what to buy. HUGE selection of beers with some kept cold. I will admit that with all those beers many must be sitting around for quite some time. It's kept fairly cool so you could make out on strong beers being aged a bit while sitting there, but I wouldn't be grabbing any IPA's or the like off the shelfs unless they were just released. Even then, I'd stick to what's being kept in the fridge if you want something as fresh as possible.

People ask if you need help here. Almost to a fault since I usually get asked several times when I'm there, but that's better than not being able to find someone. You can also mix 6 packs with ANY beer in the store. It's pricey but a good way to try a few different beers or if you can't decide what to get. Definitely the biggest selection I've seen in the Boston area, but not necessary the best store to buy beer in.

This is THE craft beer store in the area...Selection is top notch, and prices are pretty reasonable, with some exceptions. It is however possible to score some crazy beer deals here; see Celebration Ale 6 packs for 4.99 in late winter this year...They also have some 'permanent' nice deal's on Dogfish 6 & 4 packs and Smuttynose 12 packs, which have stood pat for months...

The service is typically very attentive, sometimes almost too much...I like to browse, since I generally do my hw before I head there, but I know most do not...In my countless visits here, there has been an issue or 2 with one of the employees in which they were either rude or did not honor store prices they mistakenly marked a bit cheaper on their labeling...Other than that, this place is like a candy store for craft beer enthusiests!

Checked this store out a few weeks back on my Eastern Mass. beer excursion. WOW, I was blown away by their selection. Seems like it is definitely better than Table and Vine's and on par with Julio's. They definately carry almost any brewery I have ever seen in Massachusetts with the exception of maybe a few smaller locals, but that is understandable. Import selection is just as good as the American stuff, everything in MA is probably here. The extreme selection is also one of the most unorganized selections too. One half of the shelves is American, the other half is import stuff, but it just seems like a messy office with beer EVERYWHERE. If you go here make sure to scan the shelves more than once because I found some good stuff even after my first look through. Probably a better place to go than Julio's for finding rares, they might stay on the shelves here for longer. Cooler selection was great, lots of chilled craft beers. The only thing about this place that seemed iffy was the amount of dusty bottles, probably lots of stuff near or past its shelf life. The one thing I spotted was marked down, so that was good. Wasn't sure about a six pack deal so I can't say anything about that. Had a few glassware deals, which is awesome. I remember one employee asking us if we needed help, service seemed OK but not overly good. Checkout was a bit slow but who really cares about that when there is a gigantic selection of beer. Prices were Eastern Mass prices, a bit higher than what I am used to out here in W.Mass, I only bought things that I had never seen in W.Mass because of this.

This has recently become my go to store for beer in the Boston area. The location is right along the Pike, down the street from Watertown Square.

They have a great selection of US craft beer and a solid Belgian selection. They seem to get the "what's new" beers and have a good amount of it on hand when they do. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and can help make some recommendations if you are looking for something particular. Also a plus, they carry a whole lot of Stone beers, which aren't sold at all liquor stores around the area. The prices on some bombers seemed a bit higher than other places, but by no means a deterrent.

Stopped by here for my first time tonight. I was blown away by the selection - tons of beers that are difficult to get your hands on. I walked away with several beers that I haven't seen anywhere else.

Beers do seem a bit scattered, but there's no easy way to organize the vast selection that they have here.

The biggest thing that I felt could use some improvement was service. Yes, I was there at like 9PM on a Saturday night, and most other customers are buying their Miller Light or cheap bin-end wine, but I would have loved to hear some unsolicited opinions from a beer geek that works there.

Definitely a great place to go if you're looking for something difficult to find. Prices are a bit high, but buying six bottles gets you a 15% discount, and this pretty much negates the higher-than-normal price of some of the beer. Plus, I try and tell myself that I'm paying for the selection of beers in addition to the beer that I buy...

First off, the selection blew me away. They didn't have the most beer I've ever seen, but they certainly had a lot of gems & some hard to find beers. The store seemed to be organized by region of the country/world. Their selection of wild ales was awesome.

They had a sale on Stone beers when I was in there, which got me really excited. However, I checked the "Please enjoy by" date on 6 packs of Ruination, IPA, Levitation, and Oaked AB, and ALL of them were either past their prime or approaching it within the next 2 weeks. I like my hoppy beers are fresh as can be, so I was let down when I couldn't find a fresh bottle.

I ended up buying a Southampton Saison Deluxe for $13.99 and a Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere Ale for $4.99.

Deciding to review after my second trip to Marty's Liquors. All the hype I heard about this place, did not deliver. Marty's does not fulfill my expectations when it comes to quality, value, and organization. Most six packs are missing bottles, mashed onto the shelves and floor surrounding the aisles in no particular order, and a select few look like they have a years worth of dust. I sorted through their selection of Paper City and could not find one bottle of Paper City's year round offering that hadn't passed the 'Best Consumed By' date by at least three months. Granted this brewery is small and does not have a faithful following, but is there no obligation to the consumer to control their inventory?
Staff is neither helpful nor friendly and the two times I've been there I have been leered at as I peruse the shelves?!!? Many reviews have acknowledged the same pitfalls as I but many still give the store an 'A'
Marty's is simply not an 'A'. Yes, selection is good and location is okay but these are not redeeming enough to make-up for dismal quality and the city high prices.

Finally made my way over to Marty's in Newton on 5/15.
Beer section is off to the right of the store - very good section devoted to beer. There are about 6 short aisles stocked with 6 packs and at the end of each aisle is a 4/5 tier shelf of bombers. There is an additional aisle of 6 pack, and another 5 shelf wall. This is all the warm stuff. Then you have a small cooler of bombers, and a wall of cold 6 pack.
Marty's has some nice sales going on, when I was in last there were Storm King bombers on sale for 3.99.
There is a great range of beers stemming from local brewers Mayflower to imports like Nogne. Picked up some Nogne bombers that I could not find elsewhere (the #100 Barleywine and their Brown ale), and some Wyerbacher Raspberry Stout that I hadn't seen elsewhere. Freshness seems to be pretty good.
Service wasn't really there until I went to cash out, the clerk told me of their discount on 6 bottles or more and how you can mix and match singles and bombers.
I think that Marty's is pretty much the beer Mecca of Eastern MA and can't wait to see what else I can find there!
