16oz tallboy can, sample from the brewery.

Lacing on this stout puts on a show. Love the nose of coffee, dark sugar sweetness, roasted grain, and herbal hops. Kiss of alcohol in the middle with suggestions of burnt black currants, pleasant roasted coffee flavor on the palate. Hoppiness is a little aggressive with some bitterness and herbal ... almost tea-like flavor. A whole lot going on here, especially like how they have both a coffee and tea element happening in this brew. Finishes semi-dry with lots of coffee and roasted grain flavors lingering. Robust and a lot of fun to knock-back.

On tap at War Horse Brewing in Geneva, NY.

This one pours a pretty dark black, with a small head and no lacing.

Smells like astringent and slightly green pepper forward coffee- it just smells kind of burnt and vegetal. Not great. There is some nice roast and chocolate, though.

The coffee here just doesn't seem to mesh with the base beer. Some tinkering with the coffee used would really help this beer. The roastiness is nice, and some good cocoa flavors, but the coffee isn't great.

This is medium bodied, a little thin but also a little creamy. The carbonation level is normal.

This is close to good but not quite there yet.

The beer looks great and smells great. A nice rich and dark color with good lacing all the way through. Coffee in the nose and on the tongue. Balanced out well with dark malts and is nice a smooth. I wish I picked up more than 1 of this can when I was upstate NY. It is very well done and I recommend picking it up

01/2017 date on the bottom of the can. Served cold in a snifter

The beer poured out a very dark brown with a small khaki head that sank to about nothing. Nose is roast, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, unground coffee beans, brown sugar and char. The flavor follows the nose well. There is a strong astringency i there that is a bit distracting. I think it could use more body as well. Not bad.

surprised this one isnt listed here yet, seems a lot of folks in the central new york area are talking it up. really impressed with it myself, my first beer from war horse. its an oatmeal stout made with coffee, chocolate, and the kicker, maple syrup! its put together beautifully, and i had the pleasure of both bottle and draft (growler) formats to enjoy this one. amazing liquid, the deepest of dark browns, with a tall and only slowly relaxing airy mocha colored head, taller from the bottle than the growler. smells like coffee and dark grains first. stout before chocolate or maple beer, thats for sure. smooth and rich, not burnt, but darn dark on the malt. there is a slight sweetness in the aroma, but hard to call it maple from the smell. cocoa seems dry not sweet, earthy and bitter like the coffee rather than milky and desserty. thats true in the taste too, the only sweetness is from oats and maple. there is a little less maple flavor than i hoped for, but that is always the case for my palate, being a maple fiend. its there though, and its delicious with the coffee and dark chocolate. the base stout is big enough to hold all these flavors up, complex enough to unite them, and smooth enough to be insanely easy drinking. perfect with a tall stack of pancakes at 11am, or for deep conversation in the indian summer. lots going on here, but this beer deserves some recognition. my favorite local beer from my trip back east. thanks to my brother for acquiring and sharing in both formats! not to be missed.

edit: doesnt age as well as i had hoped, the coffee drops off a lot and some oxidation kicks up. the beer is still really mellow and flavorful, but without the coffee in the foreground it seems to be almost missing an element. better fresh, which i am finding with a lot of coffee beers...

I always find coffee stouts a bit of a challenge to characterize in that coffee and beer seems an awkward pairing, but they work for me; the whole seems to be more than the parts.

Quite foamy from a hard pour but the head went away fairly quickly to almost nothing. The aroma was coffee and something . . . maybe a bit sour, but that did not carry over to the taste. I think the highlight of the beer was strength of the coffee flavor, which I think they nailed . . . not too weak, not too strong. From memory, it might be a tiny bit stronger than Founder's Breakfast Stout and a tiny bit less sweet (I may be wrong . . . it's been 3 or 4 days since I had a FBS). The Feel is good. It seemed a bit thin when poured cold, but improved as it warmed (and I raised the score while typing).

I suspect I will buy more.
