Picked up a growler while visiting the Finger Lakes region last weekend. This is the last of the six growlers from various upstate NY breweries that I brought home with me.

A - Pours a nice copper red. A good 1 - 2 finger head dissipates to leave a nice lacing around the top of the glass.

S - Fresh Hops. Probably English, they are quite bitter.

T - The bitterness of the hops is a little off putting. I seem to remember it tasting a little differently when I tasted at the brewery but it was also at the end of a long day of brewery winery tours so you know how that goes.

D - Seems to get flat really quickly but this could be the product of the week old growler that I am drinking it out of.

M - A little thin. This is a decent representation of the style. I was surprised to find stuff like this during our trip so I guess I can't complain too loudly. I'd drink it again if I ever find myself in the Finger Lake region.

22oz bottle at fridge temp poured into a snifter. Labeled "lieutenant dan IPA" 6.6% ABV.

Pours out a slightly hazy sunset orange color with a nice looking slight off white head. OK retention, head is easily revived with a quick swirl. Spotty lacing.

Not the best aroma for IPA, but I've had much worse. Slightly vegetal with some hop resins, some pine sap, Nice malty backbone.

A nicely balanced IPA, not a whole lot of hop flavor, but some resin and bitterness is definatly apparent. A touch of grapefruit but mostly pine balanced by a nice malty flavor.

Solid body and feel for an IPA.

A pretty good offering, not really worth a second bottle but I'd be interested to try more from war horse.

An owner let my friends and me tent out in his yard on a bicycle trip through upstate New York. We woke up and it was the morning of the Grand Opening of the Barley Yards Brewing Company (part of a collection of Vineyards). Tasted all their offerings on tap and bought a growler of this and the Black Lager.

Strong aromas. I could smell the hops. Equally rewarded in taste. Crisp and strong but not overbearing or squint-eye bitter.

Drinkable as a most IPAs can get.

Great bunch of guys up there. Check them out if you are upstate.

A 650 mL bomber purchased at the Three Brothers compound in Geneva, NY during a Finger Lakes brewery excursion.

A: The IPA is a darker amber color, still translucent but with more of a vernal glow. A head of nearly two fingers resulted in thin patches of lace all around the glass.

S: The nose is citrusy and concentrated, a resiny blast of hops sitting on top of caramel malts. I also smell a dash of cinnamon, an unusual element to waft out of an IPA.

T: Plenty of caramel malts set the stage for the IPA's strong hoppiness. That hoppiness is citrusy, grapefruit through and through. When I had this ale on tap at the brewery, I was blown away by the fresh hop aroma and taste. It's not as strong here but it still delivers a wallop. A syrupy, oily hop flavor lingers long after each sip is gone.

M: The mouthfeel is hoppy, bitter in an unconventional way. The bitterness is more syrupy, gradually bringing the bitterness to the forefront.

D: I've taken my time with the bomber and enjoyed its evolution. It's not nearly as impressive as when served on tap though, so a visit to Geneva is necessary to really appreciate the IPA.

On tap at War Horse Brewing Company in Geneva, NY.

This one pours a light and slightly hazy orange, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

When this beer was brewed by Custom Brewcrafters, it was pretty forgettable, and not good. This version, now personally brewed by War Horse on their own system, is great. It smells like moderate zesty citrus, some biting pine, and grassiness.

This is actually really nice now. There's tangerine, grapefruit, grassiness, pine, herbal flavors, and pineapple, with no discernible malt character. ]

This is super drinkable, with a crisp mouthfeel, and a normal level of carbonation.

This was a huge improvement over how it used to be. Cheers, War Horse!

Bought a 4 pack from Beers of the World on 5/20/17. Served cold in a Duvel tulip/ Hazy peach with a stiff white head. Some lacing and foam residue. Aroma is powdered grapefruit. Taste is candied citrus peel. Mouthfeel is frothy and chewy. This is a solid, staple IPA. Love it and will buy more.

Nice clear copper color with a white head and decent lacing. The smell is malts and the scents of peaches and mangoes. The taste is nice but the malts seem to be more forward than the mango. It has a nice bitterness at the end. Quite a nice beer.

I should knock off some points because this one seems to taste different depending on the day/batch. But at times it's top notch. I love the Earthy/Bitter Hop flavor reminiscent of umm, hemp. It's a nice change of pace from the Pine and Citrus IPA's taking over the world.

Tastes of Cascade, Magnum and Columbus Hops, with an excellent malt flavor.

Pours a pale yellow with a white head = good retention and lacing.

In the nose is big tropical fruit and citrus, orange, mango, backed by a nice floral bouquet and a decent malt hit.

Taste is citrus and tropical fruit up front hung on a thin bread malt backbone. Finishes dry.
