Very Good
Grevensteiner OriginalGrevensteiner Original
Notes: The beer presents itself in a palely amber colour with orange reflections and a mellow soft head. The complex flavour is firstly dominated by caramel with a slight undertone of honey, roasted almonds, and fresh fruity flavours that bring tastes of green apple to mind. Grevensteiner Original appears very crisp and elegant despite its round and malty-sweet body. A smooth toasty character paired with nutty flavours opens a distinctive finale, which unfolds impressions of butterscotch.

Cloudy amber color with thick creamy head sitting on top that sticks to the glass. Sweet honey malt base on the nose. Taste is honey malt with light caramel, nuts, and delicate fruitiness. Medium body. Overall leans towards the more malty side. Really nicely done.

Never seen nor heard of Grevensteiner until today, when lovely, reasonably priced 6 packs were sitting in the cooler at Baltimore's Wine Source. It's been ages since I had a good zwickel, so I did not hesitate to pick them up.

Pour is quite dark for the style, but very thick and lively: cloudy blood orange with a voluminous and retentive head of bright white foam.

The aroma is spectacular. The last time I smelled a Zwickel this lively was New Glarus' wonderful Zwickel, which was discontinued well over a decade ago. It smells like a walk through a meadow at dusk on a summer's day: grassy, lightly floral, vegetation, sunshine.

The flavor is not as pastoral as the aroma, nor as intense, but it's still quite good. Surprisingly smooth and sweet malt up front with nodes of nuts and honey, grassy and fruity in the middle, and then an earthy, yeasty back end and finish. Very well balanced and quenching.

Pours a clear gold, somewhat musty finish. Off character on the end—can’t quite place it. I’m always game for a good kellerbier. Unfortunately, this did not deliver on the goods.

L: Cloudy, amber, unfiltered. No visible sediment. Solid foamy head, and consistent lace throughout.

S: Hops, hay, and malt

T: Absolutely outstanding complex, refreshing flavor with depth. A blend of sweet caramel and bread, with a bitter hop middle, and excellent malt finish. Everything is balanced incredibly well

F: The mouthfeel and balance allow this beer to breath all the way from start to finish with each flavor flourishing properly.

O: Picked as a random single beer off the shelf at Total Wine and it's absolutely incredible. Never had a kellerbier, and this was an excellent intro.

Poured from a freshness dated 16.9 oz. can: hazy, amber hue with a quickly receding, foamy white head - deeper amber than I anticipated.

Very fresh aromas of bread and spice.

Now, this is a Kellerbier! This is perhaps the best tasting one I had tried; I must admit that I have had only a few. This one has a unique and fruity flavor for a lager; perhaps it is the yeast. In any event, there are nice doughy and bready flavors along with a spicy-fruity flavor, very faintly like cinnamon but in a positive way.

Medium-bodied with a very refreshing mouthfeel that lingers on the palate; the carbonation is lively but restrained for a lager.

I am very pleased with this interpretation of a Keller style lager. The Germans really know how to lager.

Happy New Year!! 2020. First review!
New year, old world style beer....

Pint can from 8/8/19 reviewed on 1/2/20

A slightly cloudy amber color with a dark brown tint and golden hues. A small off white head forms, lays down quick with plenty of silky cover.

Honey and Smokey maple malty aroma hits my nose first. Root beer and wet cardboard, old spice and zesty and tangy hops ride in quickly after.

It sure has that easy, old world lager flavor! Deep malty complexity with grandma's herb rack combo, sweet honey and spring water with dark malted grains of the field. Hops have a very herbal and mildly spicy tone with maybe a hint of wild fruits deep down. The yeast is classically German lager sour breast and tanginess supreme.

Mouth feel is light to medium bodied, snappy sip at first and then malty and mellow in the finish. Crisp herbs subdued by sweet malty effects overall.

Certainly quality German standard, nothing explosive or wild, just good 'ol Lager stylie to start the beer journey for 2020.

(500 ml can; BB? 29 NOV 2019; purchased cold single at Shangy's... decanted into a fat tulip)

L: clear, amber liquid, vague haze; huge, sticky, dense-sudsy, off-white foam - dreamy hold and silky gleam; lacing in jagged bands... decanted a few times, but the eventual silty slug dropped in enhances the foam retention (even further); dank-ifies the clarity

S: caramelized oatmeal cookie malt aromas (squared, inviting), soft floral overtones... dough-yeasty aromas amplify a couple notches with the sediment introduced

T: understated, but dry, crusty-bready, delicately-nutty, malt base; crusty aftertaste, subtly toasty and herbal-bitter... sediment included, caramelly character expands, almost to an overly-rich helles-bock

F: subtle round edges; thinly-frayed, subtly-spiced cut-drop finish... bit of spicy, numbing static in the mid range, spilling to the sides

O: I could drink this in buckets; bold, but not distinctive, the underlying malt sludge and fruity-flowery stains plas to my weaknesses... totally gonna score a 4-pack, if I can remember where I saw it (1618)

1 PT. 0.9 FL. OZ. can
Served in a mug

This beer pours amber in color with burnt orange highlights. It is topped with a mountain of beige head that leaves spotty lacing.

The smell is of steeped cereal with an earthiness. The hops add an herbal and vegetal smell.

The taste is malty and grainy. It is earthy. The hops balance this brew nicely from being too malty.

Medium bodied with a velvety smooth mouthfeel

I wanted to try a new German beer in the Octoberfest season. Mission accomplished.

Bready aroma, with caramel and apple.

Thick, creamy off-white head, 1 inch, receding moderately with a deeply pitted surface and thick lacing. Slightly cloudy (but mostly clear) deep amber color with plentiful rising bubbles. Very inviting look in my footed pilsner glass.

Despite the abundant bubbles, palate is a bit flat but with nice body.

Robust complexity to the taste: fruity, caramel, grainy malts, nutty, floral hops, subtle hops bittering in the middle and lingering. Finish is tending toward dry, but more chewy and thick than crisp.

Overall, very enjoyable. The robust taste is very nice, but the finish lacks crispness.

Poured from a 500ml can, with a deep amber, cloudy appearance. Flavorful and malty with a light caramel edge up front, and then a very clean finish. I can imagine enjoying this beer outside on a hot summer day. Nice mouthfeel, a bit thicker than expected for 5.2% abv. Overall, an excellent imported beer picked up for a very reasonable price.

Poured from 500ml can into pint glass. A 2" off white head drops slowly with plenty of lacing on the color. Color is hazy amber/orange. Aroma is fruity with yeast esters and rich bread. Mouthfeel is between light and medium with a somewhat dry finish. Flavor of toasted bread, nuts, caramel, plums, and herbal hops. Overall: very good.

A: Beautiful deep golden colour with a light head and continuous carbonation.

S: Toasted malt and cereals with a light fruity tone.

T: A light caramel flavour with undertones of wheat, honey, and apple and a dry finish that leaves the tongue clean and eager for the next sip.

M: Beautiful carbonation that makes you want to savour the texture and draw out the layers of flavours.

O: A subtle but surprisingly complex and tasty beer. Well balanced with a crisp finish that would make it a delicious brew on a hot weather day. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I did and will certainly buy it again.

It looks wonderful with a lovely white, long-lived head but the aroma didn't really excite me. The taste followed suit in that it was gently malty-sweet with little swell but a wonderful "drink some more" finish. It is actually a lovely beer and I would buy it again. I just wanted a touch more of something from it.

500ml can, best by April 25th 2019.

It pours a hazy pale amber colour with oodles of foam, lacing is good.

Smells of toasted and caramel malt, light fruitiness, low suggestion of any bitterness.

Nothing to add in the taste what I didn't mention in the smell. Power packed with flavour for the 5.20%abv.

No complaints aboot the mouthfeel.

Excellent lower abv beer to sip on.

Very enjoyable beer. Moderate malts, decent lacing and well bodied. Dark, complex and very well balanced. I was impressed with the long lasting foam on top. I drank it moderately cold but I'm sure this would be taste great in any temperature.
A highly recommended Kellerbier!

A: Pours a slightly hazy deep copper in color with moderate amounts of fine active visible carbonation rising quickly from the bottom of the glass and moderate dark golden yellow + honey + burnt orange colored highlights. The beer has a three finger tall dense slightly sudsy foamy dark beige head that slowly reduces to a large patch of medium thick film covering the entire surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Slightly stronger than moderate aromas of caramel + toasted + biscuit + slightly nutty malts with light to moderate amounts of caramel sweetness and light aromas of herbal + floral hops.

T: Upfront there are slightly stronger than moderate flavors of caramel + toasted + biscuit malts and a light flavor of nutty malts with a light to moderate amount of caramel sweetness. Light flavors of herbal + floral hops which impart a slightly heavier than light amount of bitterness which lingers.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol. Slightly fuller bodied than I was expecting with a decent balance between the sweetness of the malts and the bitterness of the hops. A decently complex malt profile.

500 mL can. Pours a cloudy light amber with an ample head. Smells of soft doughy malts and a hint of bread. Hops are a touch herbal. Tastes well hopped up front. Herbal and spicy with an ample bready malt flavor. Softens quickly in the back end and finishes with a doughy malt slick finish. Creamy, almost. Medium light. Seems to drop off in flavor in the back end, but easy drinking and enjoyable.

Slightly cloudy, pale amber colored body. Less than one finger of white head dissipates to thin cap and ring. Leaves behind some layers and spots of lacing.
Sweet malt aroma, caramel and green apple.
Sweet malt taste, with caramel and green apple. Also has a nutty aspect.
Thin to medium mouth feel. Good carbonation.
A very easy drinking beer that is sweet but has some backing earthy aspects that makes it pleasant to drink. Full tasting without being heavy. Overall has a yeasty body, that balances with the sweetness. The overall taste suggest the butterscotch as described by the brewer.
