This was my favorite beer on my recent trip to Croatia. Beer pours a lovely dark brown with a dense head. Smells of baker's chocolate and a bit of tobacco. The flavor was a bit coffee/mocha with just enough bitterness to keep it interesting. Not too sweet. Very drinkable and goes down easy, even at the end. Mouthfeel is rich with medium carbonation. It is sold in a half liter bottle at a very low price point so an excellent value when visiting Hvratska!

Pours almost entirely black, with a dark brown rim to it and a mocha colored, soon disappating head.

Smells of cardboard, toffee and bakers chocolate, tied together by a whiff of earth.

Has a lower carbonation with enough swing to keep the beer refreshing on the tongue, which lets the palate open up to a profound, silk earthiness right from the beginning.

Tastes of dark chocolate, wrapped up by scented earth a metallic minerality and toffee, which create a beautiful and pungent interplay. Develops a nice dryness, with the rich malts prevailing, reminding of old leaves, with only the slightest malt sweetness cutting through, adding to the ever evolving flavor profile of this.

Great tasting beer, showcasing a perfect balanced interplay between licorice, earth and toffee, which stays enjoyable till the end.

50cl bottle purchased at Buzz Bar in Dubrovnik for 24 kuna and served cold into a Tomislav tulip. 7.3% ABV.

HEAD: 2 inches wide. Gorgeous khaki colour. Of apt frothiness and creaminess, with a soft appearance and an even consistency. Nice healthy complexion to boot. Retention is rather good for a 7.3% lager - around 7 minutes. No lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as the head recedes.

BODY: Opaque solid black with deep Ruby hues. Nontransparent. Quasitranslucent; it glows enough to expose the Ruby (unlike, say, Guinness). I see no yeast within.

Promises a robust beer. Looks good for the style.

AROMA: Caramel weaves together the dark malts, schwarz malts, and chocolate malts that comprise the core. Hints of welcome cream and hazelnut. Teasing hints of dessert wine/red port. On the sweeter side, definitely. Vague fruit does emerge, but not with the intricacy of accompanying esters (as you'd find in an ale). The cleanliness of lager yeast is working to the beer's benefit in terms of a clean presentation of flavour, but I worry if that comes at the expense of complexity. In any case, attenuation seems spot on, and I find no booziness.

Roasted barley is sorely absent. The luxurious dark fruits (plum, grape/raisin, maybe prune) are the stars of the show, but I wonder if more of a cocoa dust character would better accentuate them, if not some burnt or charred character as well.

Aromatic intensity is above average. Suggests a nuanced, balanced Brew with ample subtlety.

TASTE: Subtle elegant dark fruits (plum, prune, date, faint grape) are complemented beautifully by the sweet dark malt foundation, with the straightforward sweetness of the dark and schwarz malts nicely accentuated by supplementary chocolate malts. Again, roasted barley is missed, and I'd kill for a cocoa dust accent to coax more depth of flavour and intricacy out of the fruit.

The avoidance of burnt sugars, charred malts, and smoke was a good call here; the plump supple fruits wouldn't be well suited by the harshness of the abovementioned.

ABV is well disguised. I find no off notes. To style, there's no noticeable hop flavour.

Definitely a balanced nuanced Brew, but there's room for still more intricacy of build. Cohesive, even gestalt, but not impeccably constructed.

I do wonder if more esters would help...

TEXTURE: The smoothness and wetness of the mouthfeel plays well to the fruit, and it has the beginnings of a delicate feel in spite of its more robust medium body, but an even more fragile mouthfeel would better highlight the subtlety of the fruits. I can imagine it better: more of a silky powdery creamy texture would improve on this already solid start. Unrefreshing (to style). Critically - it's not too bready, heavy, or filling like so many inferior beers in the style.

Complements the taste well, but doesn't elevate the beer as a whole. Near perfect carbonation.

OVERALL: The best beer in this style I've had in recent memory, Tomislav brings impressive nuance and subtlety to a style too often relegated to bready malty messes. One of the best Croatian beers I've had so far, and memorable in a style that's difficult to stand out in. Boasts a rare harmony of texture and taste, even if theres still some dialling in to do. Though it ultimately lacks the complexity and depth that would elevate it to world class level, it's a damned respectable effort and will please even the most discerning of drinkers. A must-try when in Croatia.

Excellent Croatian beer, dark red brown color with hints of caramel or of prósek for those familiar, which could be likened to the taste of port wine (very subtle). Delicious lighter dark beer.
