The beer is dark amber with hints of copper, the head is off-white, very high and fluffy, but settling slowly and leaves good lacing. Some curtains.

The smell is sweet and smoky, like a smoked sausage, some spices and chocolate.

Upfront intensely sweet, brown sugar and dark bread, sweet dried fruits, then we have bitter burned notes. Roasted coffee and a dry spiciness.

Medium low carbonation, small bubbles, a thick smooth feeling, a huge body, and a dry finish.

The sweetness and thickness is almost a notch too much. But as an after-dinner-by-the-fireplace beer it is very suitable.

When you pour it up so the beer is dark yellow little dark brown in color.
The foam is against some pretty white, but you have to work to get it up.
The foam has flavors of hops, malt and orange
At first the smell you get to a boot of smoke and orange and orange with lots of cloves.
You get a "Flach Back" to the man himself was in kindergarten and Christmas fiddled with orange and whole cloves that you poked into the orange.
You also get some knäckiga tones, dried fruits, with a little sweetness and a bit of honey and syrup, looking a little more orange.
Brödig little dull and bitter tones.
Direct feel to the tone of the smoked beer. (But it does not take over)
Again, my "Flach Back" of the flavors of orange and whole cloves.
Now, I was ambivalent and do not know if I should drink, or pour it out, a total surprise.
But I take a sip.
After the initial reaction subsided, I start now find more notes.
Is a moderate-balanced bitter, some sweet, some brödig.
Finds little dark syrup, dried fruits and a little more seasoning.
The beer is a bit "dry" in the taste, then comes a little dented up.

2014 330ml bottle 5% ABV Best Before 28.10.16
from Vinbudin, Olafsvik January 2015
Smoked malt is used along with spices so it's debatable whether this should be reviewed as a smoked herb/spice beer.

A - Nothing to fault in the appearance, which is a light cola colour with a full light tan head that recedes to a faint cap.
S - A faint amount of smoke which I didn't pick immediately, munich malt, and a suggestion of spice (maybe rye malt)
T - Some spice at first with a long munich malt finish that ends up a bit generic
M - Prickly carbonation which recedes to a medium full smooth finish
O - I quite like this and it's certainly the best Jólabjór I've had in Iceland. I bought a six pack, and I'll cherish each bottle, but a bit more spice, and possibly a more distinctive yeast (I'm guessing they used their house lager yeast) would make it more memorable.

Perhaps the most beautiful beer I have ever drunk. Fantastic aroma with strong notes of smoked ham and yeast. The taste is a little thinner though.

A: Pours a copper to red colored beer into the glass. The head is pale brown with big bubbles. The carbonation is somewhat visible.

S: It smells smoked birch wood, ginger and smoked ham.

T: It's smoky, almost like a mild Rauchbier. Smoked ham, ginger, oranges and spicy hops.

M: Strong carbonation with medium body.

O: Overall a decent beer.

The smell is smoky with notes of forest fire and campfire. Quite a lot of sweet bread/dough/malt/wort. Some alcohol, some sour hints and a very light bitter notes.

The colour is deep wine-red (36 EBC), the liquid clear. The two finger head is compact and pale brown. It sinks slowly leaving some lacing.

The taste is dry and somewhat smoked. Dry-bitter flavours of crystal malt. Sweet, caramel/toffee flavours. Medium body. The aftertaste is bitterer than expected with somewhat hay-ish hops. There are some slowly growing Christmas-spicy notes, too (cardamom, cloves). Some cereals and lightly smoked flavours in the finish.

The carbonation is strong; the many small bubbles are gentle on the tongue. The liquid is mid-smooth.

A spiced rauchbock? Perhaps not the average Christmas brew, but this is a fine after-dinner drink none the less.

A: Dark copper/amber, one finger high creamy head when settled after an violent pour.

S: Smokey, burnt sugar and some spices.

T: Smoke, burnt malt. Some sour notes in the aftertaste, nothing particular that makes me think of christmas. (This is a christmas beer, isn't it?). Aftertaste is somewhat bitter and smokey, but it fades away quickly.

M: Crisp lager like feeling.

Overall: Decent but not impressed. Smoked beers are not my favorite type though.

A: Pour is dark reddish brown with a medium large uneven soapy head. Slow dissipation leaves quite nice lacings.

S: Sweet smoked malt. Lots of vanilla gives it an almost perfumed vibe. A smoked ham-scent is present.

T: Sweet smoked malt. Vanilla and charcuterie-like taste. But there is also a artificial tone.

M: Aftertaste is rather short. Body is medium and carbonation the same.

D: This is my first Icelandic beer; not a very good Smoked beer though...
