Another of my local, in-person trader, tone77's latest drop-off.

From the bottle: "Want More Intercourse? Please Visit ..." Yeah, well, having grown up in Lancaster (City), we know all of the jokes about some of the small towns in the countryside. NeroFiddled really sums it up nicely in his review, so I am not going to gild the lily. It just strikes me as more of a joke-y novelty than a serious attempt at brewing.

My pour created two fingers of dense, french vanilla-colored head with good retention. In fact, it looked like the rounded top of an ice cream cone until it slowly began to drop. Color was a deep amber with NE-quality clarity. Nose had a caramel malt presence that made me wonder if perhaps NeroFiddled is spot on with his supposition that this should be an English, rather than American, Pale Ale. What hops I could discern on the nose had a grassy quality. Mouthfeel was medium and the taste was honey-like in terms of its sweetness with a grassy hop presence. Finish was semi-dry and the grassy-honey flavor lingered well after the swallow. It was drinkable, sure, but it was not much of an APA. As an EPA, I might be inclined to give it higher marks.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a beige color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mild, some light hops are present. Taste is well balanced, hops up front, light bitterness, quickly fading into the strong malt backbone. Easy drinking and refreshing. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer.

12oz twist-off cap bottle poured into a pint glass. There is a date code of sorts stamped on the neck but it is scratched off. This appears to be a filtered brew due to zero sediment in the bottle and perfect clarity. The brew appears a perfectly clear copper color with a finger of slightly stained yellowish white head. The cap maintains fairly decent from a constant stream of carbonation. Some finger-like patterns of lace stick along the glass.

The aroma of this brew is full of caramel sweetness. Lots of notes of toffee mixed with a bit of butter to bready grain. This isn't the aroma I was expected for a pale. There is little to no hop inclusion. About the only scent coming off of this that might be hops is a bit of fruity twang but that is so scarce that the major aroma from this brew is butter and caramel malt sweetness.

The taste is exactly what you would expect based off of the aroma. Butter if the first thing I pick up on along with plenty of caramel to toffee sweetness that is a bit like toasty grain to biscuits. There is a light fruity alcohol flavor and the back of the taste includes more butter. There is a very faint herbal bitterness included that does a decent job of contrasting the butter and caramel which are the leading flavors to this brew.

This is a medium bodied offering with a modest level of carbonation. Visually, this brew plays the part of a pale ale quite well. In the aroma and flavor department this is a huge buttery let down. If it wasn't for the label stating this was a pale ale, I never would have imagined this being a pale. Not only did they forget the hops, the diacetyl is out of control and this is way too malt to be a pale ale. I would not recommend trying this brew.

Intercourse Paradise Pale Ale
12 oz., $1.83 @ Whole Foods, Plymouth Meeting, PA

These beers are contracted at the Lion Brewery in Wilkes Barre, PA and the Lion makes pretty good beers but I think what sells them is the marketing. Intercourse is the name of a rural Amish town in PA. It also happens to be a "dry" town which is a bit ironic for the name of a brewing company. So, "intercourse" is the joke, and oddly enough that area of southeastern PA is kind of quirky. Intercourse offers other interestingly named beers based on towns in the area: Blue Ball Porter, Bareville Pilsner, and Mount Joy Light. They've also got the town of Bird In Hand right nearby so they could always add to their portfolio. The odd thing about bird in hand though, is that it's closer to Intercourse than Blue Ball. Or, on the other hand, in hindsight, that might really make the most sense of all!

Appearance: Clear golden body with an orange cast. The frothy off-white head holds well. Average lacing.

Smell: Floral and gently malty. Clean and bright. Some yeasty fruitiness bolsters the floral hoppiness; and the malt is grainy with just a touch of light caramel and breadiness to it.

Taste: As might be expected, the taste follows the aroma. Most of what we perceive we're tasting is actually olfactory anyway. The floral/fruity character comes on pretty strong at the outset, but fades quickly going into the finish. It's firmly bitter, and stiff enough to balance the malt while not going overboard, yet still solid enough to leave a nice showing in the finish. Some more grassy and leafy hops emerge as well, and some residual malt lingers nicely.

Mouthfeel: Medium towards medium-light in body. Soft across the palate with a moderate carbonation level.

Overall: The fruit and floral component is fairly unique, especially of late; and it's surprisingly compelling. I think of it as a kind of 'introduction' beer, but at the same time I see it really is - a great English style session ale. It could be a bit more rounded and polished, but it's got enough depth and complexity to it. Nicely done.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a standard pint glass. Copper/gold in color, with a moderate head of off-white foam.
Aroma-Surprising big whiff of sweet malt for a pale ale.
Taste- An off-putting big dose of sweet, toasted malt. Hops, if any, stay way in the background, leaving a rather lopsided, almost cloying taste that is not in the style of an APA. Maybe an English pale can get by with this much sweetness, but not an American pale, in my opinion.

Poured into an E&J Cask & Cream glass on 5/23/11

Clear, pale amber color. Just shy of one finger of white foam. Filmy retention. Not much for lace.

Smells decent; bready, caramel malt base with a touch of biscuit and ambitious citrus hop notes - orange pith and, to a lesser degree, pepperings of lemon. A bit earthy, too. My only complaint here is that the hops smell artificially sharp. Tastes less pleasant. Hops are mostly earthy and toned down with some nondescript citrus peel hidden on the finish. The back half is too sweet; caramel with a bit of a buttery character. At times it's almost candy-like. Medium body with some sugary slickness. Appropriately average carbonation. Finishes a hair grassy with low bitterness.

An unremarkable and forgettable take on the style. Not worth finishing the bottle, in my opinion.

Poured from a bottle into my bells tulip.

A- this beer has the same color as the brown bottle it was poured from. Half a finger of white head that dissapates fairly quickly and leaves frugal amount of wispy bubbles on top of this very clear beer.

S- very sweet malty smell. This beer almost reminds me of a doppelbock. Lots of caramel and even heavy molassess. Im not getting any hops at all. The only other scents besides malts is a slight alcohol odor. Not really odors you would expect out of a pale ale.

T- taste is identical to the nose. The sweetest pale ale i have ever had. Huge caramel covered biscuit flavors that dont let any hops escape. some alcohol mixes with these flavors and its taste profile becomes that of a scotch ale. Very weird.

M- Pretty light but there is an absence of hardly any carbonation.

Overall not a bad tasting beer but they may have mislabeled my beer. Nothing about this beer is a pale ale. The flavors are nice but the feel is lacking. If this was labeled a doppelbock or scotch ale it would be a b+, but as a pale ale it is nowehere close to the best in the style
