Typically my beer odyssies involve me, my girlfriend or some combination of friends; but this time it involved the girlfriend and her family. On our way down to San Diego (my first time( I made sure that we had lunch at this particular Pizza Port location.

The location doesn't initially strike me as a beer destination. The restaurant seems like a great place for families to bring their kids for dynamite pizza while parents can knock back a few pints. The crowd was a mix of mostly families and 20 somethings and beach town dweller types and hesher types. Not what I imagined, but I went with it.

The beer selection was pretty awesome. Not being a noob to the Pizza Port offerings I was really glad to see few brews that are widely available in 22oz form. I tried their Yakima Wet Hop cask IPA which was PHENOMENAL, and I mooched some of my ladies heff which was also very good. I was also surprised to see a separate menue of guest taps, including Fat Head's Rye Ale, which was also really good. The fam weren't the biggest beer drinkers, so I was limited to two pints (but I later got more Port beer at Hamilton's a few nights later).

The pizza was also great. I had something with a wheat crust, which I didn't expect to be as good as it was.

Overall this place was pretty fucking rad. If I lived in the area it would be a go-to for sports nights. Pick up a few pies, a growler and I'd be good to go.

A good little spot to stop for bottles, especially if you are already headed to Pizza Port for a pint or two. It is fairly small but has a solid bottle list. When I was there, the service was very friendly and knowledgeable as well.

It's always nice to have a bottle shop around. No, it's not the most beautiful place, nor does it feature the largest selection, but they stock an impressively eclectic collection of good beers for so small a place, and enjoying a bottle right there is a plus.

As mentioned in another review, Texas Liquors, just down the street, does have a better selection. Love them too, but check the bottling date if you're buying something that is date-sensitive.

I would agree almost word for word with Bfarr's review three years ago. If you're at the Pizza Port and want to pick up something to take home, it would be the logical and convenient place to go. Otherwise I'd suggest Texas Liquors a few blocks east for a vastly better selection and about the same issues with old bottles.

Wide array of southern California breweries, though not a lot of depth. I did not find much of interest to me, even though they are so close to the Vista and Escondido brewing centers. But it's worth a visit if you're having a taste in the next-door beer garden. Though that suffers by comparison with the expansive outdoor spaces at Bagby just up the coast highway in Oceanside.

This would be a great Bottle shop on its own, but combine it with the Pizza Port located next door and it is a match made in heaven. Great selection, and awesome outside area to enjoy a few brews with your food from next door.
