22oz bomber

Appearance- healthy finger of caramel head that's slightly pebbled but mostly velvet. Almost completely black with only a dark mahogany showing up to the light

Smell- coffee steals the show with sweet maltiness rounding it out, the chipotle is only a slight hint after the two

Taste- very mild sweetness to start, nice roasty toasty notes of espresso and dark grains that envelop the mid mouth, peppers come to play on the way down and linger with a satisfying mild spice finish

Mouthfeel- medium/full bodied but a little watery that doesn't quite balance with the flavor profile of the ingredients, I could use something a bit more to chew on

Overall- A good winter warmer, having played around with my own chile brews I know the temptation to just go wild with the spice, but this beer keeps it on the quiet and lets the coffee and peppers take turns with the palate. The mouthfeel left me a bit unimpressed, but I'd gladly have another.

Extra'd by daveydapoolman- thanks!! Pours a deep opaque brownish black. Pour yields minimal head with no lacing or retention to speak of. The nose starts with medium roast coffee followed by a hint of smoke, and some green pepper. Notes of chocolate and vanilla are sprinkled in, but coffee and pepper dominate the nose. The taste starts with mild acidity, presumably from the coffee, this develops into notes of chocolate and deep notes of fresh brewed coffee paired with smoke. The chipotles don't bring much heat to the table, but some definite smoke and vegetal notes. The finish dry and revisits the coffee along with roasted barley. Mouthfeel is medium to light with moderate carbonation. Overall, this is a nice brew that could be so much better. I think the brewers went a little shy with the chipotles as heat never really presents itself on the palate.

Poured pretty much pitch black, with a nice big coffee-colored head. Smell is pretty much roasted coffee up front with a bit of spice thrown in there.

I'll admit I was a little hesitant to try this for a while for I was in doubt of how this would taste, but I was pleasantly surprised. Lots of coffee up front with a nice spicy kick from the chipotle in the tail end. Nice and smooth, creamy. Goes down easy. Will definitely be having one of these again.

A: Poured jet black with a moderate coffee colored head. Two fingers to be exact with lots of bubbles and a few curtains of lacing after the head resedes.

S: The nose says chocolate covered chipotles to me. The coffee was present for sure but the nice roastiness, peppers and cocoa took precedence

T: Initial coffee gets ya but its pretty tame. The chipotles are ushered in with some creamy milk chocolate. Oh so nice. Harmonious the flavors are. No one flavor seems to dominate here. I am digging this. A nice roasted malt base for the flavors to ride on. The finish has a little hit, a nice pepper zing and coffee beans.

M:: Medium-full bodied, well carbonated, loads of flavor, a bit sweet with a light decadence to it

O: More than I was expecting here. My first beer from Bootleggers was very nice. I see the ratings are bit lower than mine. I think some people forget this is NOT a Imperial Stout as others BA reviews have eluded to " I see where this one is going but just misses the mark on the flavors of a big stout." Its a single stout. It hits all of the BJCP criteria and its very flavorful and full for the style. Well done.

I had this beer from a 22 oz bomber. My wife picked it up cause she wanted the bottle cap for her bottle cap board. ...Go figure.

The beer poured a deep dark brown with a tan head that lasted though out the drink. There was considerable lacing down the sides of the glass. Carbonation looked good.

The aroma carried strong dark malts - roast malts that were fresh ground coffee like, some caramel sweetness, and some spice.

The initial flavor was of dark roasted malts, followed by some caramel sweetness that was balanced by pleasant hop bitterness and spicy smoky chipotle pepper flavor. There was a lingering but pleasant bitterness backed up by a spicy pepper flavor that was actually quite nice.

The beer was medium heavy in body with a pleasant mouth feel, a little higher than average carbonation for this style, but easy to sip.

Overall, I liked this beer. I really don't like too many coffee stouts or chipotle stouts (or chipotle/chili pepper any beer...), but I enjoyed this one. I think the roast malts, hops, coffee, and chipotle was all balanced very nicely. I think this beer would be good with a big bowl of chili on a cool fall night watching football...or with a big bowl of VENISON chili in deer camp. I would get this beer again.
