On-tap at Bootlegger's,
A: Pours an orange-brown with a light tan head. Fair lace.
S: Hops all the way. Pine, cedar and grapefruit, classic American nose.
T: Upfront stone fruit, with white grapefruit, apricot and a bunch of pine. Not seeing the Belgian influence here, but it's definitely tasty.
M: Robust, resiny, oily, full-bodied.
D: A very good barleywine, standard flavours, but well made. Not overly sweet which I liked.

On tap at Bootleggers Tasting Room 5/7/2010. I've had the opportunity for a few weeks to try this, but I've put it off until it cleared up. Last night, the owner/brewer said it had cleared up.
A: Clean brown color with a slight white head, not murky at all!
S: Hops, hops and hops. Pine, grapefruit, pine and a bit of resin. Also a bit of nuttiness and caramel.
T: Great hops flavor up front. Citrus, nutty, grapefruit, toffee, caramel and a bit of breadiness. Definitely more hops than most barleywines you'll find.
M: Slick, smooth with a medium mouthfeel. Normal amount of carbonation for a barleywine, it was nice.
D: The drinkability is what you would expect from a barleywine. But, if you don't like hops, then definitely avoid this one.

On-tap at Bootleggers
A: A very murky, muddy light brown color with a very minimal tan head.
S: The hops really stand out wonderfully on the nose. A lot of grapefruit, miscellaneous citrus, pine, fruit, and earthy hop notes. There's a nice bit of bread behind it as well.
T: Though not as intense as in the nose, the hops really carry the flavor of the beer. The citrus and pine hops give the beer a great bitterness which sort of dominate the malts and sweetness that you would normally expect from a barleywine.
M: The body is perhaps on the thin side for a barleywine and the minimal carbonation gives it a slick feel on the tongue.
D: A pretty nice beer from Bootlegger's, though I think I preferred the 76 a bit more. This one might be a bit better with some more carbonation.

It's been 77 years since Prohibition was repealed in the US, and to celebrate, Bootlegger's has made a ...Belgian Barleywine?! On to the beer:
It's murky! Cocoa brown color with very little in the head department. Despite the Belgian influence, it's very American in style. the hop aroma was a good start to it all. Enough piney hops to make a hophead happy. Funny, this beer was very pleasing to me for the first few ounces. After that, I thought it was maybe a little unbalanced, but still enjoyable. But my last few ounces, I was ready to move on. Piney hops with hints of mango were the dominant flavors, and the Belgian influence was minimal at best; I could find a little bit of fruit skins. Body was a touch light for the size, but still had enough meat on its bones.
Hmmmm...I generally like Bootlegger's beers, and obviously this was experimental, but I think the recipe could be improved upon. Less hops and/or more Belgian yeast would be good places to start. Worth a try, but I'll pass and wait patiently for 78 Anniversary Ale.
