My second gruit-beer, where herbs and spices are used instead of hops. Seems gruit goes back c1000 years and pre-dates the use of hops as the prevailing form.
L- Mid amber, pours with very slight haze (with minor sediment left in bottle) and a pillowy 2Cm white head that's holding well. (15mins later nearing bottom of glass , 5mm of head is still covering).
S- Mild, I just get a hint of citrus fruit aroma but then don't register it again.
T- There is a slight tang to this, a brightness that could be linked with the 'citrus' note^. It's rounded and rich (i/o sweet), added to which added punch and a sense of dry heft come from a liquor'ish zing on the palate .Some say registering the latter is not a sign of quality/balanced brewing, but I'm not complaining it has a great flavour!.
F - Rich, it's a meaty full-bodied beer. More a style for slow-sipping in winter than sessioning or in hotter months.
O- Lovely, blind-tasted I'd *never* have guessed this contained zero hops. A good one to have a wager with a friend on, line up 3 beers incl. this one and challenge them to ID the one w/o hops. Since it 'spretty damned punchy + has hop-like bitter notes, unless they're familiar with the gruit style, theres little chance they'd pick this one.
330ml bottle. BB: 07/08/2021.
Bought online from: BelgiumInABox for import/home delivery to the UK. Labelling unchanged from that shown in the Description^. Curiously (for a direct personal import from Belgium) the front lable is ALL in English. Back lable is brief but multi-lingual and lists ingredients, and notably 'herbs' but not which ones.

Pours a clear golden amber coloration with a large, fluffy head. Smells of quite sweet, doughy, slightly grainy malt, honey, floral hops and light accents of fruity/spicy estery yeast and herbs. Tastes of quite sweet doughy, slightly grainy malt, strong floral hops, some additional honey sweetness, light fruity/spicy estery yeast notes of green apple and clove and just a hint of herbal accents. Finishes bittersweet, with a light bitterness and some floral hops and estery yeast lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

Not sure what to make of the last beer in this trilogy, as it seems less well-balanced and is also brewed with hops, meaning that I have to judge it as a Tripel, rather than a Gruit. Not sure why they decided to use hops in this one, which just add a rather strong and somewhat displaced floral quality to this, which even kinda overshadow the estery yeast notes which really should be the stars of the show here. It's alsoeven sweeter than its counterparts, with a somewhat lighter herbal presence, while I would have expected more spice, perhaps some chili from the name.

From Belgiuminabox. At Agu's house. In Teku glass. Similar herbal profile to their bruin but with more body, more alcohol pressence and less molasses. Ive liked it less. Generates more foam, requiring 2 pours

On tap.
Loose webby froth over lager gold. 3.75
Powdery grain, dough, and flowers - no hops. 3.75
Corny sweetness, some graininess, lots of flowers, and a bit of spice, but also a big whack of butterscotch. 3.25
Almost medium, sticky, round. 3.75

Sweet to the point of cloying, no big yeast character, and short on hops. Plus has some DMS and diacetyl going on. Doesn’t taste 9%, so there’s that. So much for drinking local in Ghent. 3.5
