Black Market Brewing Embargo Imperial Brown Ale

From bottle: "Ale aged in whiskey barrels with vanilla & cocoa nibs"

A- pour yields a nice fluffy 2 finger head with decent retention. Beer is a deep brown in color. Nice lacing. 4

S- big whiskey and wood notes, both the vanilla and cocoa nibs are present as well. Some caramel and ripe dark fruits as well. Alcohol is definitely there. Nice. 4

T- follows the nose, but the vanilla and cocoa are not as pronounced. Instead, it is mostly whiskey and caramel. The vanilla is there more than the cocoa nibs though - I would have preferred it the other way around. It is still a very pleasant and enjoyable beer. 3.75

M- a bit thin, unfortunately. The main detriment of the beer. 3

O- I enjoyed it. The body was lacking, but the whiskey barrel notes were very nice and the base beer was good as well. 3.75

On tap at the Barrel Republic. Allowed to warm in a snifter for about 15 minutes. This is an imperial, barrel-aged version of Shakedown Brown.

Appearance: Dark red-brown with a very durable tan head that leaves a temporary coat of lacing.

Aroma: Booxy (bourbon) and fruity with suggestions of dark fruits and faint spicing.

Flavor: sweet up front but this is largely countered by some bitter and tart aspects by the finish. good complexity. Wood and bourbon add to, but do not mask, the rich medium and dark malt base.

Feel: Medium+ body with good soft carbonation.

O: A tasty beer worth seeking out.

Got an infected bottle. Blew the top off when opened and gushed on the floor, funky tart smell. It all went down the drain.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly black in the glass with a vigorous, half glass head of malted milk brown. Foamy. Aroma of dark malt, chocolate, whiskey barrel and light vanilla. Flavor is somewhat subdued chocolate, whiskey, mild nuts, vanilla and wood, with a more astringent wood, boiled coffee and nonherbal hops bitterness developing into a light bitter chocolate finish. Medium bodied. An odd barrel aged ale. The flavor has nice components of nutty, chocolate malt with barrel influence, but everything is almost too mellow and the body is fairly light for the ABV. I really liked the base beer, but it was not robust enough to support the barrel aging. An enjoyable brown ale that hinted at what it could have been. Surprising amount of foam.

Apparently I got a bottle that was not infected, as some have. Poured a dark brown almost stout like consistency. Very sweet with a bit of dark fruit. The Bourbon is not as noticeable as I'd like, but this suits my palate very well. Will get these again as soon as make it down to BMB again

A- Pours a dark brown color with a big two finger khaki colored head. Some light lace after each sip.

S- There's definitely a big barrel note here, but I'm getting brandy way more than bourbon. Poached pear mixed with coffee and some nice vanilla. Custard, light cocoa and some tapioca pudding. Interesting.

T- Roasted malt and raisin with a bit of tart plum in the middle. Sort of a muddled blend of dark fruit, booze and a tart black cherry skin note. I like the components here, but the flavors are pretty disjointed and the booziness detracts from the better parts of this.

Deep flavored and delicious brew with nicely balanced barrel flavors. Dark, clear red-brown with clouds of off-white foam. Quite lovely.

Roasty and mellow at first sip. Rich and malty. Just a little charred grain taste along with the hoppy aftertaste. Burnt sugar but not overly sweet. Not boozy, either, just enticingly flavored with some vanilla and bourbon notes.

From the 22 oz bottle purchased at the brewery tasting room in Temecula. This bottle is in perfect condition, and I've never had any problems with Black Market brews. They've been putting their well-used barrels after batches like this into service for storing their light sourish fruit beers, we were told at our Feb. visit.
