Wow

Look, taste, feel was amazing. It didn't have much of a smell or head of foam. BUT...

The taste was amazing. It said smoked and that's what you got. A beautiful quad with some nice hops.

Well done. Great sipper.

Black Market's Seek & Destroy, Smoked Quad IPA, using cherry- and mesquite-smoked malts. 12.7% ABV.

A: About two and a half fingers of slightly yellowish head. Ever so slightly reddish caramel colored in the glass. Golden yellow in the dimple. Just a faint hint of sheeting, and couple small strings of lacing.

S: A definite aroma of piney and citrusy hops, but it's not overwhelming. I do smell a little bit of smoke, but it's hidden in the back. Kind of meaty, like bologna.

T/MF: Yeah, there's a good amount of hops, but not as much as I'd expect, so that's good. Mostly piney, with some noticeable grapefruit, and some backing caramel from the malts. A touch of char and smoke, but I had to look for it. Still not something I would want to buy again, but one of the more tolerable IPAs. Along with the the Midnight Hoppyness, I'm beginning to see that even monsterous amounts of hops can be balanced out well.

Poured from 22 oz. bottle, into a Belgian tulip glass.

P.S. This has 111 IBUs.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium to dark bronze amber with a half finger off-white head with good retention and lots of lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, orange citrus, citrus and piney hops, a light smoking house smokiness. Flavor is orangey carmamel malt, citrus hops, smoked meat, sweet citrus rind; finishes with sweet orange citrus hops and more meat house smokiness. Medium bodied with light creaminess and active carbonation; nice mouth feel. A very interesting take on an imperial IPA, the savory meatiness is unusual. Reminiscent of a pancake with orange marmalade syrup and smoked bacon. Tasty orange flavors to the hops and the smokiness is not overly intrusive and adds a surprising and interesting depth. A little astringency to the hops that is mediated by the smokiness. The high ABV intensifies the flavors but is still well covered. I like smoked ales and I liked this one. Unusual, flavorful and warming.

Picked this out at total wine for percentage and due to only having a quad ipa once before. Very pleasently surprised at quality. Especially for the price, this is one of my new favorites.

the smoked element is too subtle. Taste like a basic double IPA, though does get points for the alcohol being hidden fairly well.
