On tap at Blue Palms Brewhouse in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a murky light yellow with a foamy beige head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of wheat, grain, banana, yeast, and spices. Taste is much the same with a grainy aftertaste. There is a mild spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is drinkable but nothing all that exciting in my opinion.

exactly what it should be, a traditional german hefe here, made in the usa. yellow and a little cloudy in the glass, with all kinds of head on it. banana clove yeast complex is as close to any of the german ones i have seen, its delicate but distinctive and definitely fruity as they come. wheat malt is very light in this one, my only real critique. i like my hefeweizen to have some body, some creamy feel for the banana esters to cling to, and something to dry up in the finish. this one is thin to me, and all the bubbles make it too light on the whole. the flavor is great though, and i really dig the yeast. i havent had any other beer from these guys, but it looks like they have several worth trying. i did the authenticity here, but would lust for this if it had a frothy fluffier body on it.

22oz bottle. Somehow the whole Prohibition theme doesn't work when dealing with a German brewing staple.

This beer pours a glassy, medium golden yellow colour, with one skinny finger of weakly foamy, and mostly just bubbly dirty white head, which leaves some low-lying cannonball splash lace in places around the glass as it quickly sinks away.

It smells of semi-sweet, grainy wheat malt, soft earthy yeast, wet banana chips, a subtle white pepper and clove spiciness, and plain weedy, leafy noble hops. The taste is bready, grainy wheat malt, a twinge of white breakfast biscuit, muddled earthy spice, underripe banana peel, ethereal hints of played-out bubblegum, and more weak leafy, musty hops.

The carbonation is mostly just soft and lilting in its genial frothiness, the body sort of on the light side of middleweight, and pretty smooth, actually, with a small burgeoning creaminess. It finishes off-dry, the wheatiness not ready to cede the day, just yet, while the spice and hop astringencies carry on with their downward spiral.

Not quite sure what awards this one has garnered, but IMHO it lies somewhere in the middle between bland American pale wheat ales, and the best of class from yer old-school German brewers. Easy enough to drink, I suppose, but there's nothing here to encourage me to lay down the ducats for another.

Now available in 22 oz bottles. Pours a nearly clear amber-tinted golden, which gets a little hazier as the bottle gets lower. Big slug of sediment in the bottle, but it doesn't stir up much when pouring. Pleasantly sudsy with a nice prickly mouthfeel.

Out of the bottle this actually tastes more like a Hefeweizen than the tap version. It's a nice blend of the American and German wheat styles. A modest amount of malty sweetness greets the mouth. Aftertaste has a faint bitterness and just a hint of roasted malt. Slight fruit flavor and some tartness. All very well mannered.

Quite a pleasant quaff, watery, and refreshing. I will look for this again, and I'm glad to see Black Market is getting more distribution with some different packaging.

On-tap at Blue Palms

A: The pour is a hazy golden orange color with a fluffy white head.

S: Amazingly, this smells like an actual hefeweizen. Lots of cloves, and some banana, though perhaps not as much as I would like. Sweet bread and wheat notes with a mild yeastiness and pepper note.

T: Sweet malts and bread all the way through with lots of spices. Plenty of clove, banana, sweet bread, and wheat. There is a slight citrus peel flavor toward the back end, almost candied orange peel.

M: Medium in body with a low to medium carbonation.

O: A surprisingly decent hefeweizen, but it doesn't really stand up to an authentic German example.

Poured into a Celebrator pokal. Pours a clear, medium golden amber with a one finger white head that dissipates slowly to a thick film. Classic aroma of wheat, light banana and clove. Flavor follows with semi-sweet wheat, yeast, clove and banana and mild breadiness. Finishes drier and lighter in flavor. Light bodied with active carbonation. A pretty good domestic take on a hefeweizen. Finish flavors don't linger as much as the better German versions, but overall nicely made and enjoyable.

On-tap at The Salted Pig without the fruit, on to the beer:

Cloudy wheat field blonde in color, topped off by a good creamy head that sticks around for some time. Baked lemon cake and some clove make up the nose, which in general is soft. The taste starts off light, though it does seem to slowly build intensity as more is consumed. Subtle flavors run all around, the clvoe and malted wheat are most notable. Vanilla and cinnamon come into play later, which jazzes up this wheat ale. Light medium bodied, semi-crisp, and very refreshing.

A bad experience with the brown ale made me shy away from a second chance of Black Market until now. I'm glad to report that the second time came up well, and one beer that I would recommmend.

Staying with my sister's family in Temecula, California, we went to old Temecula this afternoon for lunch. With a great tri tip sandwich, I tried this beer, which the waiter told me was a Belgian white. Obviously it wasn't, but it was a tasty hefeweizen. Hazy golden color, banana, cloves and a good amount of yeast. Refreshing and good.
