Pours from the 650mL/22oz bottle a very hazy, wheat-y orange yellow, with lots of visible carbonation, and even a gentle pour nets four or five fingers of foam--though it recedes down to a finger two fairly quickly, leaving lots of soft lacing.

Smell is tart, very much like raspberries, slightly wheat-y and sour yeast. Bit of a farmhouse-y funk. Good balance of sweet and sour, with a good fruity character.

Taste is much the same: sweet, sour, fruity (again, lots of echoes of raspberry), wheat-y, faint hints of a distant relative weisse (clove? coriander?). Yeasty. Sharp, tangy. Not mouth-puckeringly sour, more like "sour candy" sour--a nice sweet/sour mix. High-ish carbonation, but good light body (without tending toward being watery).

My past experience with the Berliner-Weisse style has largely been limited to the real deal in Berlin, where you the syrup is added virtually automatically. Which makes this tough to score, comparatively. But it is a solid, nice and enjoyable summer brew, tangy, sweet, and decently refreshing.

On-tap at Boneyard Bistro, Sherman Oaks, CA

A: The beer is hazy pale light yellow in color and has a slight amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that died down and left some patches of bubbles on the surface, a collar around the edge and some lacing down the sides.
S: Light aromas of sourness are present in the nose.
T: The taste mostly follows the smell, mexcept that the sourness is a little stronger and there are also notes of lactic acid.
M: It feels light-bodied and slightly tart on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The beer has some refreshing properties—it's neither too acidic nor too tart.

22 oz. bomber,

A: Pours a murktastic goldenrod with a soft medium white head, very good lace for the style.

S: Lactic acid, lemon, sour wheat.

T: Huge sourdough bread and lemon attack with a lot of lactic acid. Not the hugest complexity, but very much to style.

M: Medium to high acidity, crisp, light-bodied. Tart puckering finish.

O: A well made and to style Berliner with a lot of good flavours. A solid starting point to get into the style available locally.

Out of a 22 ounce bottle. On to the beer:

An inch of head sits on top this cadmium colored beer. A little cloudy, especially when the entire bottle is emptied into the glass. The aroma smells sour, lemony, and also medicinal, the last character I could do without. It actually does do well mocking the Berliner Weiss style with its sour and tart fruitiness and touches of creamy wheat. What dampens the excitement is the medicinal aspect, which gives the beer a taste of ointment. It's light bodied and paired with well placed carbonation. It's drinkable as it stands, and take out the ointment character this would be a great warm weather refresher.

22oz bottle. Interesting and sort of on-the-nose thematic end of WWII imagery depicted on the label.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, pale golden yellow hue, with two fingers of puffy, tightly foamy, and somewhat fizzy off-white head, which leaves some low-lying ocean plume lace around the glass as it quickly dissipates.

It smells of mildly tart light orchard fruit (green apple and underripe white grapes, mostly), grainy wheat malt, a certain funky cheesiness, and some very faint earthy, weedy hop bitters. The taste is zippy and agreeable tart mixed pome fruit, with a suggestion of fermenting white grapes, a semi-sweet wheat graininess, some thankfully reduced musty white cheese, and more understated leafy, and kind of dry grassy hops.

The carbonation is nice and fluffy in its idyllic frothiness, the body medium-light in weight, and generally smooth, the tartness not really that overt as to subvert (sorry) things here. It finishes on a strong drying trend, the tart and hoppy essences asserting control, as such.

I can see why they might suggest mixing this with some kind of sweeter fruit concoction - it's not any sort of overwrought sourness that enable a sense of lacking or imbalance here, but rather a feeling of incompleteness, maybe? Whatever, it's light, adequately drinkable, and just crisp enough to keep me soldiering on, since my raspberry and woodruff (hah) syrup supplies have surely dried up.

I had this beer on-tap in a tulip at 500East in Seattle.

Appearance: clear golden hue with a finger of creamy white foam. Head doesn't stick around too long but overall pretty attractive.

Smell: very sweet and fruity with a nice lemony character that I really like.

Taste: lightly sweet with a dash of sourness and a little bit of fruitiness. A very straightforward Berliner Weisse but well-made.

Mouthfeel: light body with a bright and refreshing carbonation.

Overall: a highly refreshing quaff. I dig it.

In Chicago in the 1970s, it was the fashion to just stir in a spoonful of raspberry jam into a Berlinerweiss, which added a lovely color as well as some much-needed sweetness. Hazy, bright lemony color in the Saxo narrow tulip. Nice foam on each pour. Spritzy on the tongue but not at all bubbly. Fruity, sourish aroma, like lemonade.

Not overly sour, once you get over the initial tart shock. There is a definite lemon flavor to this stuff. Fairly substantial mouthfeel. I'm not a big fan of the style but this one is more drinkable than most. It might be quite tasty with the addition of some syrup.

I like these World War II themed labels and Black Market is one of my favorite southern California breweries. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Bottleworks in San Diego, which has very fair pricing, and this one went for the nice price of $5.49.
